I had to restart I had issues with the MDF splitting. So I went with Birch Plywood. Here are a few pics, I kept the original crown. I still have sanding of the primer layer and filling to do.

I had issues with moisture with the Osage Orange so I dried it in the microwave, which caused cracks but it is still very playable. I changed the tip set up to delrin it worked out much better.

Right on Jeromy!  Hang in there it's looking good.

I tried turning then hollowing a wet piece of oak last year and WOW!  The wet wood turned like e dream, but... It came out really nice then proceded to crack in multiple places and began to look more like a piece of popcorn than a top.  Live and learn...

Let's see if I understood.  You remade the large top body with birch plywood as the original MDF was cracking.  And you also had some cracking problem with a smaller top made out of osage orange. Is that correct?

As poptop said, go ahead. I am sure your perseverance will produce some outstanding tops.

Yah Ta0 that is correct. The way I chucked it up was causing issues. I switched to a firmer material to compensate. I turned the body then the top. I am still trying to sand and fill the body to smooth it up. The small to is cracked but I filled them with superglue and it plays well.

Courage¡¡, mistakes you learn a lot, I do little to try to work the wood, and now I work a new spin on oak, a wood never worked so hard, and how it is different from previous ones, but gradually be fine, I'm looking forward to seeing the end result of his great spin. ;)

dear Jeromy

i'm sending you a message of perseverance

1 gluing layers : beware of bubbles of air and density of the glue
that might be the cause of spitting ; also the timing between "gluing" and putting the layers in contact under press: depending on the type of glue , it can go from a few seconds (sometimes using an accelerator) to a good 20 mn
2 osage orange moisture : the use of a micro wave to speed up a drying is rarely a good option : time has no speed = better wait a few weeks to see if the moisture progresses, sanding is very often enough , or taking advantage of the change of tint in some parts , to enhance them...

now with birch plywood , you should end the project with ease

keep your hand on the plough !! hold on ! ;)

Here is the paint scheme I decided to go with. The surface isn't perfect but this is the second time painting it and I gave up.

I am calling it MAXX after my favorite comic book character.

Here is the link. I see a few issues first is that it is really top heavy (the next top I will correct that) and the tip assembly needs to be beefed up I can feel it flexing.
