Thanks John for finding and posting this. Cometa is doing an incredible job going from country to country promoting tops and trick play. In the 70s Duncan went to Mexico and introduced spintop trick play. Around 10 years ago, 5 Estrellas re-exported this style of spintop play to other countries in Latin America, like Costa Rica and Colombia. And now Cometa is conquering Europe: Spain, Hungary, Slovakia . . . I love it!
After Slovakia the natural next step would be the Czech Republic, I guess. I see bicycles and Play Stations in Daniel's future . . .
One consequence of Cometa promoting tops is that these countries will become "ring" countries, i.e., playing with a ring at the end of the string. All because of the rings on the Imperials originally sold in Mexico. Something that has me curious is the use of the name Peonza in the Cometa promotions, both in Hungary and Slovakia. In Mexico the word is trompo. Peonza is an alternative name in Spain, but on Pulpowski's site trompo is more common.
That "Indiana Jones" trick is really impressive. Carlos is a very good player. The trick reminds me more the open button whips that Matt Ritter used to do than the open whip from Colombia. But, if I see correctly, he is catching the open end (after it goes around the tip) between the arm and forearm! The fact that he does it directly from the throw makes it even more impressive.
