magnetic top
« on: September 21, 2011, 12:03:35 PM »

hi all
a short sequence filmed last weekend in a park where Ludo and I were doing demos with a stand /display of tops during the city festivities... good gig, we met an Indian family there: woman , man, grand pa and children could all spin tops with ease ; they were from Pondicherry

magnetic top action
i tried to catch it with a spinning DT giulia, but no success
a problem of polarity maybe , or it spins too fast to grab

Looks like a very nice setting for the demos.

The tip of the Giulia is only slightly magnetic while the magnet of the Magnetop is weak: that is why you did not have success.  Stainless steel generally is not very magnetic. I just tested several other tips with a neodymium magnet. I was somewhat surprised that the tips of the Mexican tops are quite magnetic. On the other hand, the latest steel tips I made are not magnetic at all (I forgot the alloy number, but I chose it for maximum ease of turning).

Neat.

Are any of your daughters in the background?  It has been so long since I saw them I don't think I can recognize them.

Ha! Even two years ago they had already grown up quite a bit:

Yes, they look a little bit different than when I saw them getting ready to go hear the group Tokio Hotel.

Nice picture.  Good looking family!
