BKS8 Mod
« on: June 28, 2011, 03:19:44 PM »

Oh, I almost forgot, while Mark was here we did a cool mod:  a "BKS8"  Bearing king with a Strummol* bearing tip and a large steel washer (taking the total weight up to 85 grams).....best playing BK ever!!! (Sorry Duncan....)....

WOO HOO! I am SO excited! This top is absolutely amazing! By far the best Duncan top ever. Now I can compete without sacrificing playability OR pissing off anyone at Duncan. What a huge relief.

I used the top in two shows today, and it worked out fantastically. It has a slightly different feel than the Top Dogs I usually perform with, but I just have to get used to it. It even spins as long as a Top Dog now! Amazing. I'm thrilled. Now we just have to figure out how to get a one way bearing in there.

I need to fill in the string gap in the crown, and I was going to do it when I get home anyway, but today the crown bloodied my hand in the middle of a show so there is more urgency on the job now.

Has anyone dropped an ST8 tip on concrete? How do they hold up?

Mark,
the tip holds well, it's pretty tuff - harden steel! I've dropped it a couple of time already on solid ground but it's still fine.

As for a quick fix on the string gap, just fill it with epoxy, an hour or so in and you're ready to go.

I am at a lutheran outdoor camp about two hour from miamisburg.  John buechele is also here.  He interrupted our big pastor card game last night to show me the news about this nice bk mod.  It looks terrific and I am glad to hear it spins well.  I look forward to hearing more about it.

That is beautiful. I'm wiping tears out of my eyes as I type this. Does anyone know if Strummol's fixed tips fit in a, RC? (Or what one would have to do to make one fit?) I seem to be going through a fixed tip phase lately.......

Have Fun,
Tom

Rip Cord and Bearing King is the same mold.
The S8 bearing tip is the same as the fixed tip, a washer is added to lock one of the bearings in an S8 top.
The S8 tip works wonderfully as a fixed tip in the RC / BK mold.

But you do have to do some modifications. Eric had to take some plastic off the tip section of the body to make the tip diameter match the body. Then he had to deepen the bearing seat so the lower bearing would fit in all the way.

Thank you, gentlemen. I didn't know the S8 had a "convertable" tip. So take a little off the bottom of the top to bring it's diameter up to match the tip, then deepen the bearing recess, probably by the same amount you took off the bottom of the top?  I love everthing about the R/C except for the tip. The idea of putting a $20 tip on a $10 top kind of rubs me the wrong way, but if try to forget that and ask myself "Would I pay $30 for the resulting top?" the answer is "Oh yeah, I certainly would!"

Have Fun,
Tom

Sorry to be a grave digger But, Wow! I would really want my top to be like that. Are you doing mods services? Could you do that mod to my Bearing king, or are you selling them? I would buy!
