Title: Loon-plage 2020 poster and flyer
Post by: Mermouy on December 01, 2019, 12:53:15 PM
Here is, finally the Loon-plage poster and even the back side of the flyer version...
This year no name on the poster as the number of guests would have filled it up! ;)

This one should be the definitive one (goes to printing company on tuesday) but don't hesitate if you see any mistake!
Ok this is not the more beautiful one but we've been lacking some talented designer these days, so I tried to do my best...

See you there!!!

Nice!

When I first read at the bottom of the poster "Petite restauration sur place" I thought you were restoring damaged tops. Then I realized that you are actually restoring people with snacks! :P

I wish you were all here. The facility at Loon-Plage is spectacular. The displays that Mermouy, Emmanuel and the rest have prepared are incredible and the vibe when I got here was magic! 😎😎😎

I just met Guillermo, who in just two years became a world class player, besides a great turner. Rocco, Il Trottoliato, an amazing artisan and top lover.

The girls (and some of the guys) are now dancing using the audio system of the place. I just realized that it's already 1:10 AM. No wonder I'm so tired!

Pepe arrived yesterday, what makes it four Spanish players. Guillermo, who is a street circus performer, has been working very hard on tops, even staying a month in Mexico to train with Cuper (and 1 day with Gus) already has a world class play!
Another Spanish with good skills is Xisco, who invented a very nice regen move (Aborigen) that I recorded (and I want to learn). I also recorded two new whips by Quentin, who also now has world class skill.

Rocco has some pretty crazy throw tops (I bought one) which he throws with great precission. There is also another artisan with a table, Paul from Belgium, and Dorian arriving today, what makes them 5 total and a great way of getting rid of euros  ::)

We just visited the Museum of Traditional Games (Musée des Jeux Traditionels (https://www.ferme-galame.org/)) of Loon-Plages. They are the reason the festival started in this town. It was cool to see all these old games, some that I didn't know existed but are still played in some regions. But even cooler was that they have a game room where you can try some of them! But the toupie tables were not there as they were transfered to the festival venue.

Hydrona and her boyfriend where here, but unfortunately for a short time. I could get her photo with Figaro, throw her "radioactive" top and witness her enthusiasm for tops.

It was another wonderful and very unique day doing all sorts of unusual top things. Attila made a 20 wrap Staircase to Heaven from a snap start! He, Xisco and myself completed two turns of passing the top in a triangle by using only behind the back trapezes (catch and immediately throw). The day ended for me past 2:00 AM, winning the Indonesian battle challenges. Unfortunately Guillermo, who physically and skill-wise reminds me of Matt Ritter, missed the fun as he got the flu.

There is a day left, but I will have to leave at mid morning to catch the train to Paris.

Hello everyone!

I was at Loon Plage yesterday,  with my mom, my  boyfriend,  my sister and her husband.
We had an amazing time!  I have met alot of great people,  and had alot of fun!
Thanks to everyone!
I even got my lover to spin a top, and he had fun too!
Thank you  Ta0,  for the legendary moment with Figaro,  it truly was an honor.
I never thought Figaro was that heavy!  You make it look so easy to spin it.
Of course,  I could  not leave without buying a top!
Bought one from Mermouy.  I always wondered how it would feel and look,  a 3D printed top.
It's truly art,  Mermouy!
Thank you CUPER,  for the gift too!  Now my lover can practice too,  if he wants.

And thanks to ALL of you!  For having the  best time of my life!
It truly was a dream come true!

Many warm greets,
Hydrona  (jolien )

A great discovery at Loon-Plage was Cosca Rocco, "il Trottolaio", a spintop craftsman from Italy. He is a very creative artisan, with a big and wonderful personality and great showmanship skills. When the Mayor of the town came by, he boomeranged a top to his hat! Here he does it to his own hat:

Rocco turns in style (Sunday he even had a wooden bow-tie):

He makes lots of different tops, mostly throw tops. He throws them tip down. Here he stacked three tops on top of a flat throw top:

Here is when he put a hat on the city mayor and threw a boomerang on top:

I got four of his tops: and inverted "damigiana" (wine demijohn), two tall laughing (nutating) tops  ;D and an impossibly-balanced globe top.

The regional newspaper, La Voix du Nord, had an article about the fest. It's based on the interview the journalist made of Herney and me, although she misquoted me as Figaro weighiing almost 2kg, while in fact it's 2.5 kg.

(https://i.ibb.co/104vP9c/La-Voixdu-Nord.jpg) (https://ibb.co/104vP9c)

There was also a TV news program that mostly showed Herney, Quentin and Rocco (but they skipped Figaro :( ).

I like this video (I think filmed before I got to the festival):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dllJdzBedQo

Attila's friend does the first throw. She was doing pretty good by the end of the festival.
You can see two of the tops I bought from Rocco: the "laughing" top at 0:07 and the "globe" top at 0:58 (but just the end of the spin).
Notice that the top on the Hollandaise Table at 0:10 was spun upside-down.

Nice video!

Interestingly, the end of the room with the stage is a dead ringer for the one in Marines. Makes me wonder if French community centers of a certain age had some design elements in common? The ceiling may be different, though.

The Loon-Plage is a more modern, bigger and nicer facility. It even has some lodging facilities attached that we used. It looks new, but I was told that the city plans to update it, so it should be even better for the next festival in 2022.  8)

Although it could not be used for the competition, Loon-Plage had the world's biggest Beyblade arena officially certified:

It's made out of a satellite dish. Ludo's youngest daughter, Sham, used it to make a call:

Did you notice the spintop earring?  >:D

Emmanuel made these giant finger tops. The purpose was only as decoration, but I'm sure they would spin. But they may be somewhat fragile, so we did not want to risk them.

Emma, Ludo and Mermouy, with friends and family, have made so many wonderful and creative decorations for these festivals!  8) 8) 8) Of course, that also means a lot of work setting up and disassembling. My hat off to them.

This is a bicycle driven lathe, where the customer has to provide the power to make his own top. This was inspired by Le Cyclotour de Jean-Dominique Denis (http://www.ta0.com/forum/index.php/topic,2668.msg27254.html#msg27254). I believe Denis visited a previous festival. It's great how the festival keeps incorporating the new spintop modalities that the different guest bring over the years.

The targets from Rocco:

By the way, there were at least 5 working lathes on the floor.

Xisco and Celso making string on the Spanish table:

Behind is the Magyar (Hungarian) table.

It was great to have the sound system of the venue (plus two giant projection screens and stage lights). It added to the ambiance (and the Colombians could not do a demo without background music  ;D ). Here Richard from Colombia leads some dancing:

salut jorge and the company

very good video ! it seems that the editor/camera man got the feel of gyroscopic waves !

about the venue in Loon : "nothing comes out of nothing"

it's located less than 5 miles from the largest nuclear power plant in Europe in Gravelines
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centrale_nucl%C3%A9aire_de_Gravelines

to give you an idea :
Reactors
Fournisseurs    Areva NP, Alstom
Type    REP
Réactors actifs    6 x 900 MW
Puissance nominale    5 400 MW
Production d’électricité
Production annuelle d'électricité    31 200 GWh (2016)1
Production moyenne    37 610 GWh (5 dernières années)
Production totale    1000 TWh

in a word , the city of Loon benefits from huge subventions linked to the power plant

in Marines it's totally different : it's a rural village with a very small/tight budget, part of it dedicated to sports and culture

all in all , after a quick feedback with  Ludo : both festivals have been a true success, but 2 in a row has revealed really exhausting ...
big 5 stars cheers for Mermouille ,Emmanuel,Dorian,Sham ,Ludo , Karine and all the group revolving around tops and kites

work in progress
next year we plan a venue in Paris in addition to Marines
it will hopefully take place in the museum of fair ground attractions, with the help of the musée des arts décoratifs (who has a section specialised in toys)...wheel see what the wind does, with the votes for a new city mayor of paris in march

spin on  >:D

Nuclear reactor, eh? You know, a miniaturized version of the plutonium oxide RTGs (radionuclide thermoelectric generators) NASA uses to power spacecraft would make a great onboard power source for all kinds of cool top-borne gizmos. And no batteries to change for at least 14 years!

Of course, you'd have to forego the shielding to get a decent critical speed (not to be confused with critical mass).>:D

Wow,that venue in Paris would be fantastic!
Title: Re: Loon-plage 2020 poster and flyer
Post by: ta0 on February 16, 2020, 05:03:02 PM
Yeah. Loon-Plage is a misnomer: there is no longer any access to the beach or even a view of the sea. It has been cordoned off by industry  :( The closest beach is in Dunkerque, 18 minutes away.
Having a festival in Paris proper would be great, specially for public attendance. But Marines is quite convenient to access from CDG airport: for 2 euros you take a nice bus with space for luggage from the terminal that takes you to Cigy, which is 10 minutes from Marines. Taking the train from the airport to the center of Paris is 10 euros.

At both Marines and Loon-Plage there was a spinning top puzzle table:

This is a creation of Dorien. Each tangram has the shape of a different spinning top. They were not easy. There also 3-D models of these tops made out of cork. In addition, there were 3 different mechanical puzzles in which you had to liberate a top. Great fun!

If you were interested in seeing turning in person, there were lots of opportunities. Besides Armin (first time he turns in public), Kostas and Rocco, there was Paul Peeters from Belgium. He had a lathe and a sign that for 6 euros a kid could turn his own top. Here is a video turning and helping a kid turn:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fhliCAqDos

Also present, Denys Losfeld, "Le Tour et Jouets". His booth:

Also Christophe Anquez, "Au Fil du Bois":

One morning we had a live band to start the day (notice the 3D printed behind):

It was a pity Guillem (Guillermo Vizcaino) felt sick and missed over a day of the festival. He is an amazing player. Here a some behind the back continuous trapezes:

This is the 4th Spaniard, Celso from Barcelona. He is an acrobat, but has incorporated tops into his show:

and this is . . . our own Hydrona!

She handled Figaro without problem (even though she is left handed and I threw Figaro right-handed).

hello again

thanks for all the  great images and reports

from the trick side there is plenty : the spaniards, guillem , quentin hug, attila staircase, aborigen regens, herney catches,

Who is the mastermind behind all of this?
about the variety and creativity in both festivals there is no mastermind
it's a collaborative work that has started long ago, with our own codes of understanding and displaying work according to each ones' skills
Ludo is still the Master Joker if there is any  ;D
