Title: Progress log from paxl and randoms questions
Post by: paxl13 on October 12, 2017, 09:49:51 AM
Hi everyone,

I just found the forum by one user of YYE that told me to come here :) Here the intro I posted on that forum ?

I used to yoyo & throw tops about 20y ago and my kids picked up some yoyo lately and while trying them out I was hooked. I got a metal responsive yoyo off amazon. Played the thing a bit but it was missing something. Found out YYE while searching for what was missing. Endedup on the fixed axle tutorial section of YYE. Bought a YYF Legend Wings and when that arrived I was in love. But I've seen that there was a Top section at the time of my order so I bought a YYF Shortcircuit. When the thing arrived, I tried throwing it a couple of time but wasn't able to make it fall to the floor on the right side up ( I was using the old technique I used to use on heavy wooden top with a too short string turns out )... Left the thing there for a while and I got back into it lately. Took the time to read a bit more and heck darn that's so so so fun...

I know I was hooked when I hit that first boomerang!!! Just that tricks is just so so satifying!

I'll get to ask more question when I'm able to figure out more stuff!!
Until then! Life is amazing and let throw some tops!!!

Welcome to the forum and the hobby/sport, Paxl!
Looking forward to your progress. Yeah, let's throw some tops! (heard at the beginning of the How to Be a Player video)

Let's go then with 2 questions.

1) String lenght or wind up line on the top. So from what I understood from the sticky at YYE + my personal try is that basically the lenght is not really importent but the up to where you wind the top is. and that line is mostly determined by a standard throw to the ground the tip must end up on the floor ( which is kind of obvious ) Now my quesiton is. Should is be perfectly balenced or it can wooble a bit. I know very very well that I'm a new thrower and that I know that some of it might me from how I throw but as long as the top fall on it's tip should I consider the string lenght okay ? ( I'm asking this mostly for my old wooden top which I created some strings for them because the one I had was all wrong. )

2) I have a YYF Short Circuit I'm able to boomerang rougly 90% of the time or you know the first 2 throw I suck and then every other one is fine :) But my question is, my older non-hollowed out hard wood top I can't actually boomerang them, they just don't want to come back to me. What are the tricks for this to work ? Should I start pulling a lot earlier than I do with my Shortcircuit ? Should I throw low or level from my throw point ( IE downward or as much level as possible )... These top are not especially heavy but they are heavyer and more dence than my plastic top.

Anyway, any insight would be good :+)
Thank you so much
paxl

ps: Once I'm home I'm gonna post pic of these old tops, they looks stunning. Especially one that's dated to rougly the beginning of the century ( 1910-1920.. ) It was at my great grandfather... Still looks nice it's a small top, never was able to throw it when I was young but with making it a very veyr small string it actually works quite well  ( on the floor ) :)

Welcome my story is similar in that I had some tops and knew a little basic stuff had talked with Val O. A bit had there video (no you tube then ) ended up moving and stored them away seeing light every so often, well fast forward my grandson was born and my nephew was over found the tops and we pulled them out it was the beginning of a new start and friends Val O. Hooked me up with dazzling Dave where I met fastvolks (Marck) and others in the twin cities who are into tops. The forum has been great and people here very helpful and very into tops...love it forsure

1- Ideally you want the top to hit the floor completely vertical, but if it's not too pointy it will correct itself and end up "sleeping". If you have a consistent throw you could change the string length until this happens. Or you could adjust the throw. I like to throw all my small tops with the tip perfectly vertical, so I modify the string  until they land perfectly (well, they boomerang perfectly).

2- A solid top has more forward momentum so you need to pull back harder than with a hollow top.

I have a consistent and solid boomerang, and yet I have never been able to accomplish it with one of the small, old, solid wood peg tops.  I have never been able to make one come back, but maybe that's just me....

Yep, String lenght really eludes me...

Is it only me or the string that comes with the Bearing King is too short.... On the floor it's kind of okay but to boomerang... Well if I can boomerang consistantly my 2 YYF ( both short circuit and elec trick )... The BK always comes back to me horizontal...

So let's ask this then :

The correct string lenght is based on the top size & mass distribution, but ultimately. A too long string & a too short string will leave the top not spinning on it's tips but what are the symptoms of a just a bit too long and just a bit too short. If someone can get me to understand that I think I'd be happy... The string lenght really seem to be the kicking factor...

Thanks

After a bit more of tryal an error, I think the string lenght isn't that wrong. I use rougly 62 inch for both top ( either YYF or BK ) but they really react differently to my pull. If I throw on the floor they end up basically almost ballenced. But if I boomerang them the BK will come back to me compltely sideways ( horizontal ) where the YYF will come back perfectly balenced. I have this feeling that there is something I need to figure out with the different aspect ratio ( which they have )...

Any tips except working more on it ?

No, it's not you.
My biggest spintop pet peeve by far is how short is the string that comes with the Duncan tops. I lambasted the Duncan representative in front of their string supplier at Worlds 2016, but I guess they have not changed. It has frustrated countless of potential players. The length will depend on its thickness (thinner = longer) but it should reach about one wrap short of the end of the rough finish on the side of the top.

If the string is too long, the top will flip too little (or not flip at all if it reaches the center of mass). If it's too short it will flip too much (and probably tend to come off unless you do a very soft throw).

Option B... guess i need to make me another string then!

DAMN :) Thanks Ta0!

There we go.. 100% boomerang consitancy with a too thick string ( too short basically rougly 40' instead of the usual 60' ) but It works.

I don't have thread anymore, I'll need to make myself a thiner string soonly. General observation, the bearing in the BK is so bad as compared to the bearing in the Elec-Trick... it actually seem to lock very easily. I might convert it to a fix tip quite fast :)

Anyway, Thanks for the explanation about too short & too long, this made me click!
Cheers

So just turned a very very bad string... it's super rough & had spot where it didn't re-wind properly but it works perfectly... I just taped my Duncan BK & removed the bearing :P... Now I'm happy :)

Anyway, time to try to boomerang to the right hand. ( I'm ambidextrous and I have trouble landing the top in my right and but I can't throw left... ) But landing it on my left is VERY easy....

Haiii!!!!!

Is is only me or the BK is a bad top... YYF Elec-trick is so much more fun to play with. The aspect ratio of the BK ask it to have a pretty big string but then it render tricks harder... I have a make shift 16*3 thread string, I'm able to properly boomerang it but it has a lot of vibe & I feel like the bearing is nowhere near as good as the Elec-trick... Anyway different top traing different skills!

On other hand, i was able to almost consistantly boomerang my very small wooden top :) I'm super happy! In fact I'm now able to almost consistantly boomerang all the top I play with \o/ !!! There is something so addictive about tops. I tried to get back into yoyo-ing but didn't work out. On other hand, I can see myself just wanting to play tops for life!!!

Let's say I own currently :
- YYF ShortCircuit & Elec-Trick
- BK

What would be the next step up for the next top. I intend to learn regens and I seem to prefer playing with fixed tips BUT the bearing tops are nice to have more time before the spin run out!
Thanks y'alls!

ps: the https://shop.yoyoexpert.com/collections/spin-tops/products/spintastics-quicksilver-spin-top?variant=18872880004 at YYE are absolutely stunning! :+). But I'd hope there is a way to convert them into fix tip top

Of those three tops the BK with a fixed tip was what I used for learning regeneration. Better yet is the Trompo Grande for its size. The ShortCircuit is great but I think the small round shape makes it difficult to learn to lasso in air.

I like that all yellow ShortCircuit you have! Have not seen that one before. How are you making string?

Well, take a peek at that video :

In the case of the YYF I used 14 thread of coton, as for the BK I used 16 thread of coton.

I'll keep that in mind for the ShortCircuit. I need to pin down my trapeze before trying anything else anyway. I'll work more using the BK.

Cheers and thanks!

So progess update ;)

I can land my boomerang on both hands constantly =) Super happy about that. I finally figured out the relationship between precession & rotation of the top on the rope ( for example in a Merry goes round ) and such. That moment when I realised that if the top is leaning more toward the ground you just make it rotate faster on the rope and it will come back exactly like if it was in your hand was amazing!

So Current tips I can land withotu trouble

Currently I'm curious to know what would be the next best step. most of these tricks are done on a bearing top (elec-trick or BK). I am considering to try to learn the trapeze and the wirewalker. My goal being regen tricks and I figure that the trapeze is a next step forward toward lasso.

Anyway any suggestion.
Cheers
paxl13

ps: having played a lot with the BK & the Elec-trick, the Short circuit feels very light & doesnt seem to have much power as it self.. it's weird. I might actually put my BK in fix tip to learn the next tricks I want... not sure yet.

Good job, paxl13.  :)
A natural next tick would be pole dancing, which is easy and showy.
And then corkscrew, which is THE showy classical bearing trick.
Wire walker is a required trick once you start playing with fixed tip tops.
But trapeze will take you to the next level as a player.

It's all about practice and more practice . . .

We all were there at one time.  What you hear is not laughing but cheering.

Ta0's advice is right on target. Oh wait, don't forget target and skyrocket.
Your short circuit is a very good top for wire walker family tricks, as are most Cometa tops.  Once you understand how much to lean the top at the launch (a little bit away from the direction of travel) you will have a whole family of similar tricks that look and feel different but have the same core skill.  For example:
wire walker opposite direction,

short circuit (el raton loco)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qenvq1GToXU

cable car (teliferico)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45PynQ1kidA

collar (collar)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wmD3Q5SnmE

EL ASCENSOR This one is harder (don't discuss the name :))
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpfPvwpsJq4&t=2s

Formula 1 (also harder) (he adds a regular wire walker at the end of the trick.)

Any catch is a good catch!  Congratulations.
The tip does no matter for catching but a bearing will give you more time to work the top back to your hand and also more time for other tricks.

Playing too much this weekend and the progression from Ta0 is good.

I need to be able to consistanly land pole dancing * which is merry goes round v2 * is the next step. I'm getting there but it's harder especially that the BK bearing isn't that great and then it will be corkscrew. That'll help me work faster on my 'setup' so that all the wirewalker derivative are possible =)

Wirewalker, I'll be able to do the dismount 50% of the time, attempted a shortcircuit once, top ended up flying but that's not bad :) I'll also continue working on my trapeze ( outside on the grass for this one is good :P )

Anyway, so long! Next progress update once I get better, I shoudl shoot a vid of all my current tricks :)

I"m landing about half of my trapeze!!!! but I have no idea how to bring it back to hand either with a bearing top or a non bearing top :)

Anyway!! What should I do to get back the top in the hand. My guts feeling is that I need to rotate the top in the counter way I'd to it from a 'merry goes round' perspective... Am I right saying that the top is trying to precess the other way ??

Anyway
Tops are Amazing

Next Q:

Trying to learn the corkscrew and the top keeps flying off the string when I corkscrew it... in which direction should the string should be wrapped around the tip of the top, and how many turns ?

Thanks!!!

Start with one turn around your arm, then work up to 3 or 5.
Wrap from inside to outside on top of your arm.  (CCW when viewed from overhead)  This is the same direction as merry go round.  The top leaves your hand to the outside just like MGR

I wrap the tip one turn. Any more invites tangles.  Wrap the same direction as wire walker so the top can drive itself. It is also possible to only "loop" the tip with zero wraps. You need not drive the top too hard. It will go down hill on its own.

Watch out for the bloody lip. :)

Watch out for the bloody lip. :)

I have experienced the bloody lip several times with the Quicksilver top while learning the corkscrew.  The weight of that top makes for a very good bloody lip.

hello
whatever the number of wraps , (4 is a good start)
the secret to a successful corkscrew is the arm position
you must extend your arm in a vertical position up in the air before the start
then you only have to accompany the unwrapping : don't try to accelerate the top's rotating movement

at the end let go until the top is in the right position to go back to your hand

my 3 euro cents

I can lasso off boomerang... or at least catch the top on the string.. after that all goes to hell b/c I don't undersand how to keep the top and bring it horizontal .. but I'll learn!!!

I can't believe that :)... I think the lasso from boomerang seem easier to me than trapese ( as trapese it's a different throw ) I practice a whole lot the boomerang... !!!!!

This video was linked on another page earlier in this thread, but it's much the same technique as on-hand - push the top towards the tip and it will pop up. Easier said than done though!

(How does video embedding work? None of the usual SMF methods seem to display anything)

Thanks Kirk and cie!

I really understood a lot of those videos. I am currently able to trapeze rougly 50% of the time and working a lot on trying to do RC to hand. There is no problem about learning RCs on a bearing top. it just don't regen ( as there is a bearing ) ?

Thanks

In fact Neff recommends learning regeneration moves on a bearing top.  You can hear the bearing stop and reverse if you get the moves right.  If you can afford a OWB top then so much the better.

I'd love that!!! But no sadly! My trusty yyf electrick, is starting to get older and I have the feeling it won't last long...

Any tip for the rollercoaster? I fail to understand the basic movement... It seems to be basically a two hand Merry go round where you jerk the top up to your hand when the string crosses itself...

I'll be honest, I even have trouble with the mount. The top refuse to lean enough to no stay completely vertical! And I seem to grasp that it's how I'm throwing it on the string that will create what I need!!!

Anyway, thanks for confirming me that it's not silly to work on my electric and wish me luck so that it does not die on me!!!!

Argh forum wasn't letting me post, wrote this up once and it got deleted. Maybe this time...

I'm working on the same, as far as I can tell:
Place the string around the outside of the top
Drop your right hand slightly, start moving left, then continue in a circle to put a loop of string around the tip. Try not to pull the tip with your palm
Slide down the string, feeding out the string with your left hand. The top should end outside the left
Circle around, pulling the top around towards the tip to stand it up
Let it go outside again on the right, as it circles back in the middle pop it up
Catch to hand or loop the string around the tip and go again

Getting a loop around the tip quickly is important. It maybe better to start with a lasso from hand just to get more practice at the movement.

Rollercoaster has a fundamental difference with Merry Go Round: the string should slip through your non throwing hand. Controlling the string "pay out" (nautical term) is critical for the trick.

Any more info??? I'm kind of confused... I was searching Google for the therm and not a lot of info!

I really have trouble getting the top to listen to me in that trick, drumbeat seems easier to me! I have trouble catching repetitively the top on the string tho!

Cheers and thanks a lots!

FINALLY...

Thanks Ta0, SuperTaiyaki's and Neff's old regen video!!! I was able to do 2 RC to hand and I'm able sometimes to bomerang to lasso to hand ( which is in my brain the same movement than RC to hand )... So far I haven't been able to do RC to string... but it's the matter of more practice... I have no idea if it regens but that's for another time :)

I'm happy! Thanks guys :)
I am amazed at how I am progressing! I'll continue working hard :)

Upgrade question to y'all.

So so far I own :
- 2x shortcircuit ( one with a badly damaged tip and one with a better tip )
- 1x Elec-trick
- 1x BK

And I was eyeing a QSH hybrid but my question is this. is it easy to lock the bearing for fixed tip play ( which is what I seem to enjoy most so far ).

Thanks for the info.

Have you looked at the replacement tip kit for the Yoyofactory tops? I quite like the fixed aluminium tip for the Elec-trick, though I wish the neck were a little thinner and the point a tiny bit sharper. Bearing Short Circuit is pretty interesting too.

I was thinking on this too... I love the shape of the Elec-trick too. I was maybe thinking on ordering a QSH and the upgrade kit. That'd give me more diversity =) And possibly a Koma too =) And the micro top obsessed me =)...

At first drumbeat seemed easier to me.  Try working on sewing machine.  The hand motion is a lot like RC but the top is horizontal.  Don't think about catching the top. Just lay the string over the middle of the top as it stops at the peak of its motion.  RC will come to you as you work the top side to side.

Good plan, but the problem I have with Drumbeat / SM is that I can't grasp yet how to whip the string out of the way on the jerk up... but I was able to do 3 cycle of drumbeat a  couple of seconds ago :) I'm happy :D

BTW, thanks y'all for all the tips

So after chatting with both YYE and Yoyoplay, so it seem there isn't a one size fit all good top. What the dude from spintastic was telling me is that he's currently out of 'fixed tip' so that I need to buy one of the fixed tip top he sell and swap out / in the tip for the QSH... The other thing I got was that it's not an easy swap in / out like bearing king for an example.

Meaning I need to decide if I want a bearing or a fixed QSH basically and just stick with it :( For now I might stick to my Elec-trick & Short-circuit and decide later on then. I'm a bit disapointed sadly. The other option would be to go to something like a STB2.5 but... at that price point... let's make sure I'll still be throwing top in a year from now!

Thanks y'allss!

Just to add to the confusion, remember that there are 3 different tips for the QSH.  C tip (early QSH if you asked for it)  Gladiator tip (early QSH in Brass or steel)
New Brass (Newer QSH)
IMHO
C tip - great for regen - Not as good for wire walking
Gladiator tip - wire walks pretty fast. I like to file the sharp edge a bit.
New brass tip -  the neck shape is great. The tip is not pointed enough for my fat hands, but some folk love it.
C tip with a light touch with a small chainsaw file at the neck. - :) :) :)

Which is the one you guys prefere in the S8 lineup & QSH ? The S8 love also look fun to bring along everywhere to play with :)

Haii y'alls.

Yesterday I took the time to adjust the string lenght for my QSH ( why don't spin top compagny adjust them... ) it came with a 72" string. With the way I throw it, I need more a 58" string. Anyway easy fix but need to take the time =) After that was the acclimation to the weight of this monster!!! this thing is HEAVY...!!! BUT. after 10-20 boomerang to hand without any issue and basically an infinite spin time I started to like it... First around the world / pole dance was ... amazing...  basically endless... Then tried a rollercoaster to hand... and MY LORD that weight help soo soo much ( I know on a bearing top it doesn't regenerate but I stopped ) at 6!!! I usually am able only to do 2 with my other bearing top :)...

Wow... Well that why it's worth 3-4x the prices of my other tops... I am very curious to receive my tropos but I think this weight would be very beneficial as a fixed tip top too!!!.

Also while playing with my koma I realised what was an orbit :) it's basically a endless rollercoaster.. or at least I was able to do it with the koma, and tried it with the QSH and.. .bam was able to do 2 orbits before well.. the top flied of the string :)

Anyway.
Tops are amazing, Keep spinning!

Far better a string too long than too short. And lots of folks throw with longer strings (different timing and forces). Cecil will laugh at your 58". He often throws with 158" line. Jack throws a QSH with about 90" line.  When teaching small children I often shorten the line 6 to 10". Half the strings in my bag have slip knots for various reasons.  It will take a while but you will learn to throw with what ever string is in your hand at the moment.

Cool. Still familiarising myself with the QSH... It's the top that have seen the most throw in my last 2-3 weeks. that top is fantastic. It leaves me craving for a Delrin top ... ( they are probably DEADLY smooth ) =) Anyway... I'm getting better. I can nail almost all the time corkscrew with 2 wrap.. 3 and more still eludes me... I am praticing funkier stuff on the 'trapeze' mount. Fun stuff... something clicked earlier on today...

I basically throw a trapeze but instead of landing it on the string, I land it in my palm... and the follow the precession why turning in round... lots of fun :) I land it basically between the pinky and the palm at that join :) Super satisfying and not too too complex to do too :)

Tops are fun =)

I was using I think a 3/4" PVC tape. I would recommend a 1/2" PVC tape, it seems to fit better. I will check my QSHs later, as I retaped them not too long ago. I know that the 3/4" tape was just not holding on very well.

The key to vinyl tape (electrical tape) is to NOT over stretch it. The less stretch is better. NO stretch is best.  As you unspool the tape, let it relax before putting it on the top.   Take your time where the tape rolls up onto the crown and down onto the top body.  Rub slowly working your way along to make the tape smooth.  2 Wraps.  Cut off so there is not a 3 layer portion.  Be sure to wrap  clockwise. That way the end will not catch. (unless you are a lefty)  Don't let you fingers touch the adhesive.
Yes the 1/2" tape is a bit easier but you can get a multi color pack of the 3/4" stuff.

I like 3M vinyl electrical tape for its ability to conform to the top's surface. I just wish they had it in transparent to not be visible.

I'll hunt colored tape next time I'm in a hardware store! For now I used black electric tape (3/4) works perfectly...

I ALSO JUST FIGURED OUT THE CORKSCREW!!!! ( I did 5 turn with a 72" inch string =) I also figured out how to alter my throw for longer lines =) Yayyyyy

But yeah, do anyone has a trick list for koma? I can Boomerang trapeze and do a rollercoaster variation but I search something for other tricks!

The names are in Japanese, but try here: http://spingear.jp/koma/2016/09/25/list/

Also, this video is pretty handy.

Trying to whip off the ground (about 18:14) is fun!

I just tried that whip... it's amazingly FUN =)

ARGH... Why didn't I buy 2 QSH!!!!... The plastic trompo grande is okay but so vibey b/c the weight right has moved again :( Anyone has any tips on how ot fix the weightright so taht It doesn't moves around when I drop the top... ( Still learning regens so I do hit the flooring quite a bit )...

But yeah... next time I have budget, either a high end delrin top or a Fixed QSH...

You can put a little piece of electrical tape around the metal ring and that will often help to force it into place.  If that throws the balance off, you can try moving it to different positions or add another piece of tape on the other side of that metal ring.  Hope that helps!!!  I spent a LOT of time with these tops for years as I worked on learning tricks.

Seriously, I have the QSH in fixed and bearing tips as well as the Strummol8's Sophia, Gulia, STB 2.0 and 2.5, and if we want to compare more "apples to apples", I feel that the QSH is on-par with the Sophia. So, if you want some top-grade tops without the top-grade costs, I gotta say the QSH blew me away. I do prefer my Strummol8's but I think that's because I'm used to them more. The only bad thing I can say about the QSH is "why didn't I get more?" and I can fix that!

Pull the ring out and stretch it a bit so when it goes back in it's nice and tight. I received one with a rattily weight ring and this fixed it just fine for me.

WOW. just WOW!!!

Removed the weight ring.. Redid the venyl tape and honestly I don't know why they include the ring to begin with... the top is WAY more stable!!!

I also was able to do FOUR rollercoaster to string !!!! I am so hyped!!!!!

I am happy. Merry xmas all!!!

Edit: now the tip seem to move in and out of the top... how is fixed that tip ? Is that only pushfit and the top is kind of broken or it's screwed in ??? Thanks!

Yes this works well. but when you are too busy playing (lazy) to undo the tape, just tap the top crown down on a firm surface. The ring will pop back in place.

I had that issue with my fixed tip Trompo Grande. I don't recall at the moment if I had the problem with my QSH fixed tip. Jack advised placing I think plastic wrap over the part that seats into the top, then give it a good push. Let's just say it's working just fine in my opinion.

Happy new year y'alls!!!

Let 2018 the year where I am able to regen!!! =)

My progess is going good enought for me. I'm able to lasso from left hand with the QSH bearing rougly 75% of the time... it's easier with my trompo grande but it's a fix tip... Koma wise, my boomerangs to both hand becomes more reliable... I've worked on it during the xmas break... anyway =)

Question. I've been able lately to do a boomerang to tip grab on my qsh ( so basically you throw. a boomerang and you catch the top by the tip mid-air.... ) Does that tricks has a name. I love tip grabbing for some reason, I'm also obsessed with finger spins... a lot of fun on komas but fun too with bearing and not... Anyway I have 2 tricks I'd love to film =).

The other small project I'd have is to make a some basic begginer videos. Stuff I'd love to have see when I started out... I know I've focuse a WHOLE LOT TOO MUCH OVER string length... Not to say it's not important but the boomerang is achievable with ANY string length... I use do need this exact length with this exact thing... Now I can thow any of my top with any lenght... But it has become a second nature...

Anyway... So long! Hope 2018 bring a lot of spinning in your life!
Cheers,
Paxl

ps: well damn, seem I am able to lasso from broomerang!! =) Without consitancy... but I tried it 4 time, got 3 of them on the string and 2 back to my hand... =)

Arghhh, last night was all about lasso! I know it needs time but while I'm getting better, I am so inconsistent!!! Anyway, and when it comes from a rollercoaster, I probably should master the rollercoaster before starting trying to master rc to string already! Anyway, last night I was landing consistently trapeze into finger nest with my fix tip!!!

Anyway so much fun!!!

I don't think it has a name. If you land it directly to the finger, it would be just a boomerang to the finger. If you land it on the fingernail, it would be the legendary "a la uña".

On this video, daveid does a boomerang to the finger plus a bunch of tip grabs (but to a tip pointing up). He just named the video "stuff"  ;D

@Ta0: There is definitively a LOT of cool stuff in there!!!

I need that double tipped top :) But yeah, I'll continue learning these lasso! Opininon. let it be I'd want a better top in between a
Fixed QSH, a Hornet, or getting a Strummol8 like the STB or the Guilla. Which one would be better ?

Right now I own a bearing QSH and a Grande Fixed + a couple of YYF tops.

Second question, the bearing in my YYF Elec-trick is starting to lock up, especially with the plastic tip. Is there anything I can do to help it get better and smoother. I keep that top with a plastic tip to be able to play anywhere without worring too much about my flooring.

Thanks y'alls

I have a Hornet coming my way. I now can regenerate not consistantly but I clearly am in the regen land with more than 6 RC to (hand | string). I can also do a trick then hit a couple of RC to string!... I'm lookign forward to get the Hornet. I'll probably attempt at some point to lock the QSH bearing or maybe not... dunno.

sink gasket (aka faucet washer) between the nut and the body  ;)
the plastic washer that youre missing doesnt work anyway. its best to go to the hardware store and pickup a box/bag of sink gaskets (faucet washers), simply put one of those under the nut and tighten her down  ;)

It really is! I basically played 2.5h yesterday and the only thing I wanted to do was rollercoasters. Sewing machine seems easier but drumbeat still eludes me, the key will be to understand how to deal with the string!

Anyway so fun, might try to film a video this afternoon!

Hey guys, I was in a craft store today and saw the breaded coton string. The one I bought was 5 coton string twisted together. Look at what happened :

(http://thumb.ibb.co/dBE1wb/MVIMG_20180106_153224.jpg) (http://ibb.co/dBE1wb)

So some parameters if anyone is interested. I did a 3ply string with a 25% reduction. I started at 300 inch, twisted until 240 inch and then plied it together. the resulting string was 72 inch, did cut it at 60 and used the spintastic button!!!

Played around 1h and it's starting to soften up!! With the new string I was able to get to 8 rollercoaster to string!... The new string seems too regenerate better but I'm still a newb so my technique is improving by the day!!

Anyway, making string is fun!!!
Cheers,

Welcome to the world or regeneration.   I well recall the time when I thought it was far, far out of reach.  Then for a long time I could keep the top going, but never get enough speed to do anything else with the top.
Some unsolicited advice:
Be careful about racking up the hours. (Ask my shoulder a year later)
Work on keeping a good posture during regens.  It looks better and is better for your back
Some of your RC are very upright which is good form.  I like to be able to tell the difference between a sewing machine and an RC.  Well done.
Don't think about catching the top with the string.  Just lay the string over or around that top as is comes up to you.
By the way a bearing top is great to learn with. If you listen well you can hear the bearing stop, then reverse. Then you know that you would be adding spin if you had a fixed tip.
Title: Re: Progress log from paxl and randoms questions
Post by: ta0 on January 08, 2018, 08:38:13 PM
Good progress!
The lassos look good. I think you need to work on the pull. It has to come all from the right hand so the string feeds through the tip. I have the impression that you are also pulling up with your left hand. Something you can do to increase the regeneration power is to lower your right hand before the pull.
There is also some regen on the catch. For that it's important to let the top slide down while feeding the string from the left hand at the correct speed, not too fast not too slow.
You are well on your way to be able to keep the top going and going   ;)

Good call about the posture! And I'll make sure to not play too much :) =) The palm of my right hand would be happy if I stop playing for a couple of days but that won't happen.

I have trouble by just laying the string and letting the do the job... I'm not fast enough yet... It will come, I'll keep trying harder!

The only bearing top I have is the QSH and to be fair, with the new brass tip & the heavy weight I have trouble doing the lasso catch on the RC ... I'll continue working on this too!

Good progress!

Thanks a lot Ta0!!! I know that I do pull with the wrong had a bit. that probably explain why the spin die on me!

More progess log : Yesterday I had fund with wirewalkers to lasso to rc to string... I can't belive I can do that almost effortlessly :) I was doing a 3 wrap corkscrew to RC to string but I was only able to do 2 - 3 rep before the spin would die completely... ( probably due to the fact that I had only a tiny bit of string to work with :)

Anyway
So long and thanks for the reassurance that I'm doing what I should be doing!!!

Yeah, I would say 12 RCs is proof that you are regenerating.
That's a huge milestone in top spinning! It opens up a new world for the player.
I still remember a time when you could count with the fingers of the hands the number of players who could regen.

so, new day, new trick chain :

With the hornet : Boomerang -> Lasso -> Airborne -> Rollercoaster catch -> RC to string for a while -> wirewalker :)

I have to learn to do sewing machines ( not too bad ) and drumbeats ( still incapable to to the pop up properly... ) The other thing I want to learn is how ppl do the dropdown into trapeze from hand. I've seen it on multiple video that uses regens, you do a trick then you dropdown into trapeze and then joker choker to get the top back to trick speed!

Cheers y'alls,

Use some Windex on a paper towel or some mineral spirits to wipe away the excess adhesive residue. This works for me at least. Don't use acetone on plastics to be safe. I've done it and it works fine for me.

Edit: To Clarify, I've used Windex and Mineral Spirits and it has worked fine for removing adhesives. I will not use acetone on plastic tops or yoyos. I will use acetone for cleaning bearings.

Well. I think I really can regen now... I just did =>

Boomerang -> Lasso -> Merry go round (2x) -> RC -> String (15x) and then miss but the top was still spinning quite strong on the ground :)

The Spintastic HP Hornet top to learn regen is a fantastic top. Quite a bit faster than the Grande BUT it doesn't resist leaning like the grande which makes
the pop up of the RC easier to not be PERFECTLY straight ( which IMO is the harder catch to do b/c you have to make that top lean!!! )

Anyway... So long, Tops are amazing :)
Paxl

ps: Had some fun with my QSH bearing, Upside down you can make it spin on the button using the square hole in the cap :) lots of fun, I have to find a way to do a UD lasso tho...

I had fun playing with my short-circuit top today but I realized that a polycarbonate top vs a concrete floor while practicing regens end up with a top with no tip! I'll have some fun with super glue later on!

So I just received my fixed QSH with a brass C-tip... Wow. I can understand now the hype about that top. From basically a almost stop I was able to regen it to trick speed in a couple of RC to string. I also fells very air'ey as compared to my hornet... The thing tho is that it is as unbalenced as the hornet was. When I'll ahve time I'll get the tape out and the putty and balence it out.

Cheers,

Best RC to string: 33 with the hornet and a soft and supple short string.

Best RC to string with the QSH and a long string ( 72 inch ): roughly 10-20...

=)

New update in the long and painful rambling of paxl!!! 😃

I am amazed how fast I am processing! Today I was able to pull out a more than 30 second freestyle!!!

Boomerang to Lasso to a corkscrew (3x) to roller-coaster to string to wire walker and then I sadly lost too much spin! But I am very happy! I started to toy with half orbits without any success but I think it will come in its own time!

Cheers!

Hey y'all,

New update, I've been messing around quite a bit lately with fixed tips. Most of my play time was on my QSH but I did retry the Grande with the mexican C tip. The difference between the New Brass C tip and the Mexican C Tip is insane. The Brass one, the spin decay is like 2-3x the one of the Mexican one. It's funny when you've been playing exclusively with Metal top and go to the Grande, my original one is well balenced. but it feels so floatey... it's fun how different they are.

Catching the top on the string is now hardwired in my brain. I usually am able to catch in almost any condition in RC / Sewing machine. I start to understand drumbeats but I don't exclusively practice them. I'll throw one or two when I regent but prefer a lot RC / SW.

I love how you can pass from Merry Go Round to RC to SW to MGR quite easily :)

Anyway so long, Keep spinning!

Hey y'all, haven't stopped throwing, but I did get WAY WAY WAY better at regens. It's mostly all I do now =) So much fun. I have a question tho.

When I'm regenning, I always seem to ossillate between RC & SW. How to control from one to another. I'm searching how I can from a RC get into a trapeze
to start barrel rolls for example but I can't seem to figure it out. And viceversa, but it's less useful...

I also have to start practicing orbits, but I'm a bit more scared to to them inside as the top usually finished flying everywhere :) I'll work on them soonly when the snow
clear out of my lawn!

Thanks for the info,
paxl

While it is not exactly what you are asking, it shows how to control the angle of the top on the string.

Thanks Kirk, I already had seen that vid. it's the one that finally got me to understand how to change the orientation of the top :)

I'll continue working on this. I just got a new trick quite down. basically it's rollercoaster to string and then you just start wirewalking then the top is at the right place on the string... I think that's called Magnetic Wire (?!), not sure.

I still have trouble with Super8 and are nowhere ready to do orbits. My record for RC to string was 97 yesterday. I also started playing with longstrings ( atleast for me... 72 inch ) without any button. Button less is fun... give more mobility I feel...

Anyway,
Cheers,
Paxl

Small update!

I am FINALLY ABLE TO REGEN through Dumbeats!!!! =) Was able to do 10 in a row ealier on today. While the QSH is a good top, I feel like the Hornet is an easier top to learn to do some regen trick on!!!

Now time to learn to chain them!!!
Cheers,
paxl

ps: orbits are still in a foreign land... I'm able to blizzard easily... orbits... I'll do 2-3 then die there... I don't regen as much but I'm not really working on them per-say

9 orbit before having to use RC 2 string to regen the top :)'

Quit happy!

Hi y'alls,

Progress wise, it's going very well... I'm able to chain orbits in an out of any combo... They are certainly not trully regenerating but AFAIK, full orbits never are... Take me rougly 10 iteration to loose all my spin from a top was already slow!

So next step in my journey is to pile up badges !! Worked a LOT on the arm walker yesterday! I hope to be able to film the spintastic 8 trick soon!!!

For the lack of a better place to put that, one discovery I made is that, for spintastic push in tip. Grocery bags work well but are hard ot make
sure non of the bag is staying out after pushing the tip in. The new thing I found works best is one ply of a kleenex ( or other brand. )

I just push the tip halfway then rip off the rest of the tissue then push it all the way. It's holding quite firm but is not too hard to remove when you need to remove the tip!

Cheers,

I use the grocery bags and have had great luck with it. I just briefly apply the flame from a lighter to shrink / remove the excess plastic. Try it (carefully!) if the tissue fails.

It's been a long time since I've posted in my own topic! Let's go then :P

Played a log bearing tops lately. I was able to get down a couple new tricks :
 - Hop the fence ( I actually like quite a bit this one )
 - Hammer ( they are semi-regenerating at this point but I think I have the right motion )
 - Mach 5 ( never was able to do this one properly... It just clicked this morning )
 - Gyro flop ( but vertical to vertical without any correction, again. clicked in the past couple of days )

Currently working on :
 - Whips ( from merry go round and from trapeze )
=> Anyone has any tips on them, from MGR... I tend to get it.. but from trapeze I never landed one so far...
  - Barrel Rolls

Cheers y'alls!

Are you attempting overhand (yo-yo) or underhand whips?  The underhand are easier.
Just open the string by having the loop come on each side of your fist and swing it so one of the sides of the loop hits the top, not at the end but further up (half way or more for the underhand whip).

I was attempting from up downwards... so the string is going down as the top is too...
What you are suggesting is the other way around I presume.

Will try that out this weekend!

Does a rollercoaster to string WITHOUT releasing the string something that has a name ? It's so satisfyling to pull out... It's kind of waves ( of Neff which is Jocker-chocker without releasing the string )...

Nope. as in you do a rollercoaster, you pop up then you thighten the string ( without releasing the string ) then you catch with the string that's thigh and then go into
another one...

A video would probably help more than me trying to explain it :P

Well done! It's a nice variation to try. I don't think it has a name.
Those who use the ring at the end of the string (e.g. Mexicans) often do not let go the string during roller coasters. But they do it differently, by re-grabbing a second time close to the dominant hand.

Anyone that can pull it off, try it, it's quite satifying... ( there is a lot that goes into it... b/c you need to give slack to the top as soon as it touches the string else the top bounce of the string :) Also pulling too early lead ot tangling :P

Hey y'alls,

This is more a Q for Ta0 than anything else but anyone else can chime in... My plan is to try to record a couple of
videos per week just to try to get more visibility on spintop tricks and freestyle. I plan to post them on this forum
when they go up on youtube for your viewing pleasure ( I hope :P ) At least in the beginning I don't plan on editing them.
More like straight from my phone onto youtube and see what happens... If any one of you want to subscribe my channel
is  : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXUm3dnH8eLSH-K4fOk8AbQ  .

So now the question is ... should I continue growing this post or should I make another ? I was planning for now to just
post in here the new vids as they comes out if that's okay with you guys !

On the video note, tonight I was the gym class of my dauther and the flooring is nicely padded so I worked on 2 nice
lil' tricks that I was able to pull off in front of the camera. I will upload them tomorrow. Last thing is that I'll try to record
a couple of tutorials on stuff that is not obvious in spintops... like how to balence a top.. this sounds stupid but especially
with top like spintastic. They need balencing =)

Anyway. So long. Keep an eye out tomorrow for the videos :)

Spinning spiders is probably the trick that I enjoyed the most out of my white belt patch application (I don't count staircase to heaven because I learned that for another patch.  Very nice trick.).  It's a very smooth and good regen that was relatively easy to do after a snap start (for me).  That said it took a few good viewings and lots of experimenting for me to wrap my head around what to grab and what to let go of.

I have looked so far quite a bit à your video and ta0's one and... I still don't grasp how to not makes MORE loop around the tip and unrool the loop :) Snapstarting and then getting into a standard sewing maching is not something I struggle at but I end up with 2 string loop instead of getting back a 1 every passes :)

I'll figure it out at some point. That trick does look a lot satisfying to pull off thos!!!

For spinning spiders use your heaviest top.
At the same time that you are catching the tip to form a second loop you are releasing the end of the string, what opens the first loop (and lets the top fall). This involves some finger fidgeting. You need to let the string run easily through your fingers so the top can fall fast enough to regen also during the fall.
Some pendulum movement helps you keep the top horizontal when the top is spinning slow.

Yep, that's what I have figured out... But again. The implementation doesn't work :) I'll continue working on it. I'm trying to learn it with my QSH from a trapeze throw to try to let me a bit more time. I don't think it's one of these tricks where it's impossible to do at high speed? ( Like wheels of fortunes?)

Thanks ta0 for the insight!
Will try to implement soonly.
It looks amazing after a snapstart!

Not sure how Jorge manages the string with his fingers, but this is how I do it.  It's less likely to tangle if you let go of the loose string sooner and let it sort of drop onto the other string.  Hopefully this helps!

It's not too different to how I hold the string. Perhaps your hand is a little more open, what wouldn't affect the trick.

But I'm not sure about letting the string go before the end knot gets to the hand. On your video it seems that the piece of string that does not go through your hand whips around and wraps around the other string, what cannot be good.

Well thanks man! Within 30 minute I was doing it!!! Quite satisfying to pull off a snap start!!! Still need to work on it tho!!!

What I missed is that you need to let go and let slide the inner loop. I was just trying to release the index finger.

More time to work that out tomorrow!

Yeah, I was trying to do it slow with more open hands (you can see in the POV where I revert back to doing it normal and you can't see what's going on).  When I do the trick at normal speed it goes way smoother, but there's always room for improvement!

Glad that helped Paxl!

Very nice 2 minutes and a half plus freestyle!

I haven't seen a OWB freestyle posted in ages. Your seems to be working well.

Some combos with my amazing "Lil' sheep" :) Thanks to Jospin!!!

https://youtu.be/aS_9KCOQgOw

On a side note. I can regen on a OWB with full orbits now !!!!! I am so happy about that!!! I can't say the same on fixed tip but it will get there. I have to watch some vid and learn how to do right orbit for max regen as far as I've read.

Half orbits, any pointer on which one to start with and any pointer on the trick as itself or it's like the rest. Just bang your head on it until you get it ? :P

These half orbit are becoming less hard!

I've been on a hunch to play with new top lately. Jospin's one is amazing but I wanted more so I got to my boxes and go out a couple of tops.

- Shortcircuit: I honlestly didn't play with this top since I got my black hornet 'bout a year ago. This top is a fantastic wirewalker... I can do the WHOLE string without missing spin and then go into regeneration cycles... quite fun to throw around.

- Gold hornet: my tip had a bad drop and it was broken / cutting my palm when i was using it. So I banged out the tip, then got the drill out and files and works my way at making it smooth and while putting it back together I decided to throw it without the cap .. and WOW.. this isn't hte same top.. it plays so much different. Precess slower, also did a lot of snapstart with it.. super satisfying... I'd love a smaller string than I have right now for it but i will proably keep it capless and just enjoy it that way.

- Grande : This top was one of my first serious big tops... but this thing is to light... it's hard to regen and it's very hard if you are a touch sloppy the top just fling out of the string never to be seen again :P

- Jose's free top: This top is interesting, it sits between the QSH & Guilia... Kind of plays like a heavy Guilia... I remember having a hard time to regen it... nowaday seem less true... I can get it to wirewalker speeds with a couple of Jocker chocker... fun top... Also needed its tip to be reshaped / sanded. I was wondering tho if using a triangle file at it's neck would improve regenerability. I'm not enough sure to risk it. ( I don't have more than one aluminium tip so.. )

Anyway. A lot of fun!

WOW... just wow... I was having a bad day today but this lighten me up.
I just tried this out :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkBZo5UHk1I

And upon a couple of tries, it just worked!!

@ta0 and others, do they look okay.. they do feel okay... i was able off camera to hit 2 semi consecutive ones... the fact the the top isn't precessing while doing the 'suns' motion do tell me I might be regenerating... will need to work a LOT more on them but... do they looks right ?

Thanks y'alls and Keep spinnin!!!

ps: I hit my first one at 0:32s ( I should have edited that down! )

Smoething that may be forgotton but REALLY important, don't try entering them with too much spin... S o definetly not right after a boomerang... Try to spin down a bit before (with a bunch of crazy 8 for example)

Yep that why I was trying to doing slow slow slowww pass in the beggining of the video. Later off camera I started to do finger grinds, they works well for that.

@ta0 and others, do they look okay.. they do feel okay...

Yep just looked at your tutorial. I indeed am missing a lot :) Is there a name to this tricks ? Are these suns while continuous suns are wheels of fortunes ? I'll start trying stuff later on today!

Okay so I watched the tutorial a dozen of time and there is something I'm not figuring out. I have trouble with involving the left hand properly and I have the feeling that that involement is the reason to get them continously. What tends to happen is that I'll be able to hit 2 consecutivly BUT the problem is that I end up with the top not having precessed enough so that I have 2 turn in my string. My guts feeling is that I don't start pulling at the right time to make the top precess a lot and / or the top is not slow enough so that it precesses not enough when it comes to the bottom of the arc.

Also, is that okay to start the movement from a sewing machine. I see the crown at the top of the arc...

My guts feeling tells me I need to look more at the video :) If you have any tips, please shoot them here :)

Thanks y'alls
paxl

Edit, read a lot on the forum, starting from a sewing machine catch should be fine, meaning that most of my problem comes from my hand coordination I think!

My question still stands tho, why do I end up with 2 wrap around the tip? Again not enough précession due to not pulling at the right time when the right time?

First, Take some time to really easily play with suns not just one here and there, but also continuously (! not in the whell of fortune style but with a small "pause" when the top is down, then sun again...)
Altrough the video is pretty fast, Chris Neff videos about suns (https://spintricks.org/suns/) help at least to understand the moments. Once suns are masterized then have a second look at the wheel of fortune tutorial again.
Watching your video again, not sure but I can see you successfully catch with a lasso/rollercoaster right after your sun, so now try to figure out how you can get your top in the same direction but above your head... Maybe? Anyway, this trick has been a real challenge for me (and a lot of others), it's without any doubt a big step to cross...
In a more general way, as a juggler I would say: If some trick give you hard time try something else for a while then come back to that one later... (Mainly to avoid frustration or anger, but also to let your brain to make his own digestion/interpretation)
Just ideas to help you not getting stuck... Hope it halps

Thanks for the answer!!!

Yep, there definively something up about my quantity of the wraps around my tip... will figure this one out in due time. Now I'd need to take a spinning pause. my right index finger isn't happy ( string burn :( )

The tricks I do tho is fun to chain in between obits and such :)
Cheers

I was looking at this vid.. so these are suns.. meaning that what I'm able to do is a 'suns'... I just need to clean it up.

 ???

Now that this thread has gone south I can disclose the theory of the Wheel of Fortune and only those really interested will get initiated into its secret.  >:D

To make it easier to describe, imagine a clock face in front of you, 12 on top, 6 at the bottom, 3 to the right (description will be for right-handed players.)
You start by catching the top either trapeze or roller coaster and letting the string wrap on the tip until it points await from you, 1 or 1 1/2 wraps, respectively.

For most of the "circle" (e.g., 8 to 4) the top remains with the tip pointing away from you, without precessing. At the bottom part it precess one turn untwisting the wrap given by the sun and getting ready for the next repetition. For the top not to precess you cannot pull on it. So the top actually describes a (ballistic) parabola on the upper part. Your hands are just following on the opposite side of the apparent circle (they are not at the center of the circle). In fact, you can do non-continuous suns (bastones) by doing just this, waiting at the bottom for the top to precess while feeding the string to prepare for the next pull. I did this for a long time.

To be able to do them continuously you need to start pulling before it reaches the bottom, around 4 o'clock, so it has time to precess (the top cannot be spinning too fast or it won't precess enough anyway). But to be able to do this you need to feed the string between 8 and 4 to be ready for the pull.

So it goes like this: You pull up with your right hand until about 8 or 9. You then just follow the top with minimum pull (the wrap around the tip will be very loose. At the same time you take string with your left hand while feeding with your right hand. At around 4 you start to pull again with your right hand until 8 and repeat.

With practice all these movements become very subtle. The pull between 4 and 6 is actually done by gravity against you hand. The take and feed on the upper section can be achieved by a slight sidewise adjustment of the hand positions. When you get it right it feels like you are just having the top go in circle with no effort.

The key of learning the trick is to involve the left hand. Start to pull with your left after it gets airborne. Exaggerate the movement with your left hand at the beginning. Do this and you will learn it much faster than I did.

The parts that I don't grasp yet is : "You start by catching the top either trapeze or roller coaster and letting the string wrap on the tip until it points await from you, 1 or 1 1/2 wraps, respectively." I think this is the part where suns and wheels of fortunes are different. b/c when I start my sun, I have zero wrap ( as it's straight after a sewing machine ) then when I get back down I have to wait for the top to precess 2 times... Meh more work when my fingers than take it :)

Cheers y'alls!

Actually, I should correct that as you can also do the wheel of fortune directly out of the sewing machine catch, with no wrap (well, 1/2 wrap) around the tip. It's just a little more difficult to keep the top on the string.

Post by: paxl13 on February 14, 2019, 01:48:28 PM
The exercise of using a dead top on a string to see what happens when you do the motion is interesting...

0.5 warp => bottom ( 0.5 ) => suns add 1 ( 1.5 ) => precession 1 turn ( 0.5 ) => Back at it.
1.5 wrap => bottom ( 1.5 ) => suns remove 1 ( 0.5 )  => precession 1 turn ( 1.5 ) => back it...

I'll play more with the top when I have time, I still think something is not right with these math but to be seen :P

Cheers

I'm not sure either... I have this feeling my calculation is wrong :) just a slight feeling :) So as to Suns, I'm progressing.. I was able to do this repeater 8x last night

Sewing Machine Catch -> Sun -> Pop up -> Sewing Machine ( 8x )

And I'm starting to try to understand what are the implication of the string while the top is flying...

We will see where that goes :)

Thanks, not at the moment, I've reconverted my Giulia to full bearing. I enjoy it more that way I think. Before I converted it back, I wasn't able to pull half orbits on the OWB, top was flying off the string, but my form was not as good as it is now.

Not a bad freestyle, sadly one drop but I kept it b/c I felt it was interesting to look at! I need to focus a bit more on other than regenrative tricks :)

Hey y'alls,

Bit of a while since I've posted, my house is in major renovation b/c of a water leak :( On the top side tho. I am now able to consecutive drumrolls and barrel rolls =) I also can do semi-consecutive suns ( which means waiting at the bottom but I do finally understand how to make a sun off a top in a trapeze! ). I also rediscovered my love for my OWB Giulia.. this thing is amazing!

Life is all good,

Tryed to shoot a freestyle yesterday b/c I'll probably not spinning for the next month :( My house will be under heavy renovation and I will not be living here. The rented house have way too much nice flooring and would mark at the first drop sadly :(

I'll work on my 2a yoyo'ing and I might try to take up juggling ( I've always wanted to be able to juggle with 3 balls but never took the time to learn it... ) Might be a good idea.

Anyhow
Cheers y'alls and keep spinning :)
paxl

EDIT: One last thing, Last night I play a whole lot my 3 incher. And I did a lot of high trapeze ( the floor was forgiving ) and at some point the tip of the top was hot! It's the first real time I can say I got a tip that way =) It felt extra good =) I love so much top spinning!

Hhehe :)

Basic regeneration is pretty much covered by the amazing video of Neffy!
The biggest problem I have is the fact that I don't own a go pro. Which mean that my video
are kind of useless to learn anything IMO.

But I am indeed open to help other with tricks! So here we go :

To anyone who is struggling with any tricks.
I am offering myself to give advices. So ask away your questions here for now!

Something I've seen on the spanish forum that I find very nice is, we could have a separate forum for tricks and have a topic per trick. This would be probably easier than having to search a 'thread' of the whole forum to find info.

Anyway, Cheers y'alls!

Yes you could and it's a very good idea :) I'll think on how I can format this. I do have ideas... I'll try to make a trick ladder that leads to basic regeneration. And we should shot a video in detail of each trick, even for the simpler one...

My ultimate intent would be to provide a way for newcomer to see regeneration not as something impossible but something hard.

I'll think on all this and start writing. I don't think I'll be able to film anything for the next month but if anyone is willing. We could make this a forum effort.

Cheers

New progress!!!

I can snapstart a spintastic hornet every time... This was insanely hard to me...
I can do multiple suns without going into sewing machines ( so just wait at the bottom then do another one )

As I had to play for a month over unforgiving surfaces, my accuracy have went to the roof quite a bit... I miss far less and when I miss I'm able to catch the top with my hands way better...

As soon as I feel like it, I might post a new freestyle.. We will see, i'd love to start to try to coordonate something with music!
Arghh... am I going to World and competing or not is the question now!

I've enjoyed reading your status reports. The snap start is a milestone for sure. I've been able to do it with several tops but the QSH is the first top I was successful with. I tried demonstrating at the Juggle In a few weeks ago and while I'm pretty consistent most of the time. I couldn't make it happen that day although I gave it several tries. I guess I still need to keep working at it.

( not sure tho.. ) This is the first time I'm able to do them semi-continously and they are regenerating. This run was rather short but after I did a 20x after and it was still going strong :)

Anyway. Super proud of theses, weather they are Bastones or Suns or just tricks :P
Cheers y'alls'

Almost. I would call them quasi-continuous wheel-of-fortune. And you already figured out what you have to do: "start pulling a touch earlier when the top is falling". That will force the top to precess so you don't have to wait at the bottom.
To me Wheel of Fortune when done smoothly feels like a magical trick.

Great video!

If I might offer a bit of constructive criticism....try cutting the distance between you and the camera by about 50%.   I'd like to see more of you, and the top, and what you're doing, and less of the yard and the background.

But, it's still a great video! ;D

It’s so great to see you throwing a big top. So many good things in life — wood lathe — steal tips from Jose, and making the big trick Trompo you want. Also learning all the tricks the Colombians can do.

I threw a Watts Year’s ago It was a five inch. When I tried a Texas Cowboy the top fell off the line on the bottom of the trick. So yes I am curious if the Watts can do the basic tricks. If not change line - maybe one of Jose tips.  Let’s get together soon and throw my tops.

I'd love to throw one of your top cecil. With my good line, I'm able to do more and more of my tricks. Most of my regens tricks are not a problem anymore. I was even able to pull once 7 wheels of fortunes conscutivly. I still don't have the force in my shoulders to do orbits / half-obits with that top.

Tips feel fine to me.
I am considering buying a lathe this summer. Problem will be tips... but well.. I can always buy Jose's one I presume =)

What I don't like about Jose's tips - the shoulder angle is 50 degrees and I like 40 to 45 degrees. But they work great. I just don't like that long look.

Hey y'alls,

It's been a long time since I've done a bit of a progress log text style :)

Tricks wise, I got better... a LOT better at wheels of fortunes... they don't feel hard anymore... I also am able with certain top to interwind from WoF to Hammer to WoF and so forth... This is using the mighty QSH.
One thing I did this weekend was convert my green "unusused" guilia from bearing to fixed tip... Man this top is a walker :) I have to play more with it. The Guilia is a nice fixed tip but it's not as easy as the QSH to regen to me. I tried ( and am ) using smaller string for it. Something like 4 ply of 2 thread of cotton 20. It seem to work better. It will yeild a longer string but I do'nt remember the last time I played with a 60 inch string.. I keep one just to throw once in a while for the fun of it. Other tricks I was able to perform was to get the top ( Jospin's one ) to spin on my finger, not my nail, the actual finger :) That felt surreal. I also was able to pull off a behind the head wirewalker!!!

I've been working a lot on my komas lately too. Chonkake wise. I've gotten a pair of gloves, man this makes grinding so much possible... Somethign I've figured out this weekend was left hand grind to trapeze... You let the top precess on your hand... looks pretty cool ! I l also understood how to do vertical kind of grind, throw back up and then catch back on the string... Koma wize, I was able to regen a koma for the first time last week. This was a ver5 of spingear with the metal side.. it's pretty pretty hard but possible... I am using what Taka call the pro string. I also was able to pull off my frist 2 way wirewalker with the koma too!!

So much fun... One of the next thing I want to concentrate on is behind the back trazpeze to lasso... That and around the 'arm' kind of combo... they looks cool... ( possibly lemmings too but after :P ) Chonkake is very relaxing to me theses days, I just play for 30 min while my wife does other stuff at night. I don't really concentrate on learning anything. To anyone that get able to do the basic regen.. I recommend Chonkake, it's fun!

Anyway!
Keep spinnin' y'alls!

Thanks for the update and the inspiration. I have been working on learning Koma and Chonkake lately, it’s hard, but really fun. I picked up my ShortCircuit today and tried a regen and about put it through the ceiling after playing with those heavy tops so much.

Another weekend, another set of tricks I landed!!!

I am working a lot on behind the back trapeze... trying to get any kind of constancy... I'll be able to land it once every 2 throws... and when it comes from swapping from front of the body to back of the body... well I land one in 5-10... I was able to pull a 8 wrap corkscrew using a STB this weekend.. I need to make a longer string... feeling is good :) I also pulled of ONE time a upside down throw into upside down orbit to upsidedown crazy 8 with my QSH :) ... That felt unreal... Snapstart side, I was able to snap into trapeze instead of rollercoster but I do not survive the first regeneration ( my brain is hardwared that I need to do a sewing machine and then well it doens't work :) Didn't play much of chonkake this weekend :)

Cheers y'alls

I think I must be missing something - if I was your neighbor I would shoot you with the water hose. All the best top throwers in U.S start regenerations and they don’t want to stop. When I met Jose, he was regenerating my 8.0 inch top I was trying to ask him a question about the line and top but this guy just would not stop regenerations - so I just grabbed the top. I guess it’s true you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.8

DUDE, we learned regens to NEVER stop :) I know you hate regens man... but they are amazing =) I always have a top in hand and there isn't any flooring in my house that isn't marred :) and right now my right hand is super tired / pain bc I played too much top & yoyo in the past 24h ;)

No I don’t hate regenerations I just like 3 of any one kind - regenerations should be mixed up with other tricks. One person said he makes tops for regenerations mainly. I make !tops to do as much as possible. Long lines and speed - l’m 74 I’m not going to spend my time pumping some dead top. I want to slam a top then - sky rocket - an eight then smack the top again. Like Insult to injury. Then insult my victim. = FUN. P.S my son calls me FLAPUS

See them exactly as Wheels of fortunes, you need to pull so that there is as Little as possible string when it passes over your hand and then let got of everything until it hit the bottom of the circle... But these are as Jose does them. Ta0 does them differently... like pumping a crazy 8... I never got much out of it... per say.

Took me a lot of trial and error to get there :P Watch any freestyle by Jose. He does them one after the other for that reason. it's the same mvmt, except without using two hand... I owe this trick to him ( or his video to be fair :P )

Anyway, me and my obession with big top..... is gone... I don't want to declare open war to big tops because I know I'll get evicerated on this forum but I'm not sure I'll be caught playing with any of them... My Hornet, My QSH and My custom delrin 3in ( 100gr ) are perfect for me!

Paxi - when I throw my 10.0. Top I’m good for six throws. So when I’m warmed up I’m to beat to throw it. It weighs 3.1 pounds straight tip. I am glad I made a few big tops - the challenge is there but the fun is not. Best top to make is a 3 7/8 trick fighter out of Poplar - solid with Jose large tip. Target - fighting and tricks is the way to go. = FUN.

I have my lathe and drill press outside. I-don’t do tops at this time because of my hips. My hobbies have been trick kites - scuba diving - control line air planes - and tops. Plus wood turning. Life is short have as much fun as possible. I love your style of top throwing - I wish all us top throwers lived in the same area. I think we all have been given a great gift of the child inside - with my bionic hips - when we top fight instead of splitting your top I will vaporize it. You have done great at tops - you will do great at everything. Your top buddy Cecil.

The upside-down boomerang is perfect!  8) Fun trick once it's learned. But learning it can be frustrating (creating that trick was, for sure).

It's also fun to incorporate some beginner tricks like arm walker and rock-the-baby on a regen run: they are not beginner tricks anymore!  ;D

Thanks Ta0!!! Yeah, I can see the many frustration of trying to come up with a solution that properly unwrap instead of going all over the place is the biggest
frustration I came up with. Your tutorial was quite helpful ( forum post IIRC )... The thing tho I like about UD boomerang is that on failed attempt, you don't destroy
your flooing or the top or anything but the top does travel quite a lot of distance tho :)

I should try to make a tutorial for it... it's honestly not that complex once you understand the basic and can do a consistant UD lasso.

Not to be a tease but I have at least 3 new tricks to film I invented :)

The latest one that I just stumble upon still need a lot of work but I was able to pull it off a couple of time \o/!!!

I'll get on that next week most likely :)

Yay!

@ta0, yep it is possible =) Sorry they are mostly regeneration tricks, I might try again with more top tricks than just regens!
Anyway pretty proud of this :)

Hope you guys enjoy :)

They are actually pretty easy as opposed to suns :) They don't have any throw / catches in them :)

Very nice indeed! So much progress "in no time"!!!

Thanks, but I've been at it since 'bout 2 years now... and regen was always my ultimate goal :)

It's been so long since I posted one of these update... I'll be honest, I've been kind of lasy lately about my online presence :) Playling too much guitar and tops.

Tricks wise, nothing really has changed much, I'm working on whips and I finally understood how to get into a sun from the hand directly... quite nice... Will try to
get a video out this week!!!

Cheers y'alls

Hey y'alls,

I'm still aliveeeee and spinnnnnin :P I also see that my topic has gone to the 2nd page, can't let that happen :P
So. what new, not much, I'm not spinning enough but having fun when I do. My mostly used top are the fantastic Jospin 3incher and my SodaTop from neff..

The other day I was able to hit a couple of pullstarts with a QSH withotu a modded cap. Has anyone done this on video... that was pretty fun. nail in the hole in the cap, tip o' the finger and PULLLLL... you end up with a spinnign top in your hand.

The other transition that IS working better is my sun to UD Merry go round!!! that's something i was suprised to be able to hit more or less consistantly this mornign :P
Anyway, how's eveyrone doinn amid this covid crap!

No, I don't think I have seen that one done. You could post the video on the Hollow Point starting thread as it would work with that one too (if not I'll have to do it with an HP ;) )

Hey, we already have a competitor representing Canada at worlds and family comes first, but perhaps . . .

It’s been about 4 1/2 months sense my last hip surgery, and with all the bullshit that’s going on I’ve been dead on the water. My Grandson will be at the lake water skiing with friends - and  he always brings his lighted top that Jose, made for him. I’m still having fun with my new hobby BB guns.

It is possible from a rollercoaster to string to go straight into a Upside down crazy 8 :) For some reason I love the upside down crazy 8... I need to figure out how to do UD orbits..

Anyway,
So long folks

Yes, boomerang a top to the fretboard and let it move up and down while you hit the strings!

No, it would be easier with a fretless instrument like a fretless bass or a violin.
I suggested it already in Jim's "Easy Trick series" here (http://www.ta0.com/forum/index.php/topic,6730.msg74275.html#msg74275).

I'd be quite scared to do this to my instrument =)
