Title: Around the world help
Post by: Kirk on April 23, 2016, 08:48:33 PM
I am confused as to why I am so inconsistent with this trick.  Sometimes the top comes around the bottom pretty much horizontal and then becomes more vertical as it goes up again right to my hand.  Sometimes it is near vertical way too early and then falls off the string to my toe.  I can not figure out what I am doing differently.  Any ideas on what to be looking for?

Hey Kirk, Be careful with that trick, I tried it outside and the top came off the string and the tip punctured my car windshield.   Good Luck!!!!

I think about that story often when doing the trick! I keep it as a back yard only trick.

Sure wish I had that windshield in the hall of fame.  That would get a lot of second looks!!!

I tried to make an headcam video of few ideas:
1) first three rotations are with "tip pointing right" start
2) second three rotations are with "tip pointing left" start - bit unusual for me
3) third three rotations are isolated - safer for practising at home, top travels just up and down and you are moving hand around the top

Each third rotation is in slow motion.

Great video, Jakub!

Some of those watching the video may be surprised at the names given by Jakub, as it looks they should be called "tip away from you" and "tip towards you." The reason is that there is a delay between when you start the movement with your muscles and the top starts to swing. So the tip-away from you is really started with the tip-to-the-right, and viceversa.

I believe I was the first one to do multiple continuous around the world, with tricks like world hitchhiker and boleadoras. I start with the tip in the direction of the swing, what Jakub calls tip pointing left. But I only start as late as Jakub if I am going to swing it very fast.

If 12 o'clock is in front and 9 o'clock to the left, I start swinging to the left somewhere in that quadrant: the faster I swing, the closer to 9 o'clock, the slower the closer to 12 o'clock. It works very well: you don't need any wrap around the tip. BUT you have to be confident and keep the speed and tension on the string: if you doubt and slow down along the arc you will lose the top!

Note that you can also do the circle in the opposite direction: just start in the 9 to 6 o'clock quadrant.
For left handed players the top will be precessing in the opposite direction, so the opposite quadrants are used.
The general rule for me is that I start in the quadrant before the precession points the tip in the direction of the swing, the closer to that direction the faster I go. But some people, as Jakub shows, do it exactly backwards!

Have you ever try from on hand?
Like merry go round drop off from hand ,but just swing.
More like merry go around the world.
You dont think about tip direction.

Ha! Now I see.  You are moving you hand to the right to slow the top as it come to the bottom.  While not yet perfect, I can usually do two in a row. It seems like I could do even more with a bearing top.  I also like the variation where the top goes up and down.
Thanks Jakub!
Kirk
PS now to try Taka's idea (after I fix the car :( )

I'm glad you like it, I hope it'll help someone  :D

I'm used to start around the world with top "opposite" but if we're talking about hitchhiker, I start same direction as you  ;)
BTW: I'm working on some hitchhiker variation for trick of the week series  ;)

Have you ever try from on hand?
Didn't you mean something like Texas Cowboy?

I don't recall anybody doing that specific trick, starting from the hand like a MGR.
There was a trick somewhat similar in which the player (daveid? pplgrande?) made the top go around the hand but always standing up.

Around the world can be done in either direction, you just need to change when you start the swing.

By the way, I called World Hitchhiker the trick because I am sticking out a finger around which the string wraps, like a hitchhiker uses finger to try to get a ride. If not I just call them multiple around the worlds.
