Title: How To Play Tujlub
Post by: TujLub on September 21, 2015, 10:32:52 PM
The Rules of Tujlub

Two teams of six players compete. The elongated court, or field, is 70 feet, and 45 feet wide. The team that is "up," starts on a hitting/launching space (the carpet). Each hitter must stay within the space when flinging his top. When the hitter flings his tujlub, that person must not cross the foul line. The foul line is in front of the hitting/launching space.

Please click the link below to see the court setup:

http://maplewoodmn.gov/DocumentCenter/Home/View/14387

Each player has a tuj lub stick — about two-feet long — which at one time was made of bamboo, but now is a cut-off golf club or wooden stick.

A dacron line attached to the stick is wound around a hard plastic top (back in Laos, the tops were made of hardwood) that's between 4 and 5.25 inches high.
There are two basic moves with the stick and top: 1. a waist-high powerful flick of the stick to quickly unwind the string and spin the top at speeds up to 50 or 70 miles per hour. 2. An over-the-shoulder fling to try to knock down tops set up in the distance.

There are eight stages, similar to innings. Each team plays 2 round.

In stage one (10 feet from the hitting/launching box), a member of the opposing team spins his top on a surface ten feet in front of the hitting box. If the opposing player top slides off from the mat when spinning, he will try to tap his top with the stick to get it back on the mat before the top stops spinning. If opposing player is not able to tap it back on the mat and the top stops spinning, the opposing player will need to set the top on the middle of the mat. One of the player from the hitting team then flings his top from the launch box, trying to knock the spinning target hard and far. When successful, both stops will fly apart, and the top that continues spinning the longest earns a point. Each top is worth 1 point. When all six hitting players have taken a shot in the first stage and at least one top wins the spinning, the hitting team moves onto the 2nd stage.

In stage two (25 feet from the hitting/launching box), the opponent spins a top further away from the launch box, at 25 feet, and each team member takes a turn trying to earn a point by successfully knocking it off. As long as one player hits the spinning top, the hitting team still moves onto the next stage. Each top is worth 1 point.

The remaining six stages involve hitting stationary, not spinning, tops set at ever-increasing distances for each stage. As long as one player hits one of the top set, the hitting team moves onto the next stage. If one of the set has been hit, but roll and sets on its own again, the hitting team will not earn the point just for that one top; therefore, the remaining player must hit the top. Each top that gets knock down is worth 1 point.

In stage 3, there are six tops lined up 32.5 feet from the hitting/launching box. Each top that gets knock down is worth 1 point.

In stage 4, five tops are set 40 feet further away from the hitting/ launching box. Each top that gets knock down is worth 1 point.

In stage 5, four tops are set 47.5 feet further away from the hitting/launching box. Each top that gets knock down is worth 1 point.

In stage 6, three tops are set as triangle formation 55 feet further away from the hitting/launching box. Each top that gets knock down is worth 1 point.

In stage 7, two tops are set 62.5 feet further away from the hitting/launching box. Each top that gets knock down is worth 1 point.

In stage 8, a single top is set 70 feet further away from the hitting/launching box. The top that gets knock down is worth 1 point.

In order to move onto the next stationary set, at least one of the top set is knock down.

How The Game is Score

Each top at every stage, Stage 1 to Stage 8, is worth only 1 point. However, each stage has a bonus point combine with the accumulated 1 point.

Here are the bonus point for each stage:

Stage 1 has a bonus point of 1
Stage 2 has a bonus point of 3
Stage 3 has a bonus point of 6
Stage 4 has a bonus point of 10
Stage 5 has a bonus point of 15
Stage 6 has a bonus point of 21
Stage 7 has a bonus point of 28
Stage 8 has a bonus point of 42

For example,

Both teams play two round and total points are accumulated from both games.

Let’s said that team “B” only hit 22 tops for the 1st round, each top is worth only 1 point which is 22 points. The team was only able to knock down the tops on Stage 6. Stage 6 has a bonus point of 21. Therefore, the total point is 22 plus the bonus point of Stage 6, 21, which gives team "B" a total point of 43 for the 1st round.  22+21=43

For the 2nd round, team “B” hit 28 tops. This time, team "B" was able to knock down the single top on Stage 8. Stage 8 has a bonus point of 42. The total point for the 2nd round is 28+42=70.

The total point for team "B" after 2 round is 43+70 is 113.

In order to get the most point and win the game, you want to knock down the top as many as you can. The total points you can get is 33 points excluding the bonus point.
The team with the highest score after two round has been played by both team wins the game.

Here is a video that shows how the game is play. This video does not explain the rules, but demotrates how each stage is play.

This video will show a better angle how each player tosses a tujlub. Each player has a different way of throwing. Once you have the basics on how to toss a tujlub, you will come up your own way of throwing your tujlub.

The type of the string you want to use is a Dacron fishing line. It's important to make sure that the Dacron string is 80lb. You can also purchase it at your local fish shop or Fleet Farm. Click on the link below:

https://theanglersconnection.com/dacron-ifga-class/

Tujlub is only homemade. You can purchase the tujlub from Chia and contact him at 763-269-2192.

Read before you purchase your tujlub::

When you order your tujlub, you want to tell Chia the size of a tujlub you want. I attached a photo that shows the size of a tujlub for better reference. The number, 3.050 inch, labeled on top refers to the circumference of the tujlub. The 4.600 inch refers to the length of the tujlub. There is a size regulations, and Chia will tell you the size regulation.

When you look at the photo of different color tujlub, the shape of the tip are different. Some tujlub has a sharper tip than the others. The sharper tip has a better spin on ground field with less grass or dirt than the wider tip. The tujlub with a wider tip are for ground field with lots of grass. The three tujlub; blue, red, and light purple, on the front of the picture has a wider tip, and those tujlubs are for ground field that have a lot of grass. The orange, brown, and light purple in the back of the photo are for ground field that has mainly dirt and less grass on the field. However, that is not always the case depending on the ground field condition. When you make a purchase of your tujlub, get a tujlub for grass and dirt ground field.

Thanks a lot for that explanation! It is very clear!

One question: when you hit the stationary tops (stages 3 through 8 ), does the thrown top need to spin afterwards?

I guess the patterns for placing the target tops have to be those shown on the video.
I am curious: some of those distances seem to be converted from metric measurements (32.5 ft ~ 10 m). Do you know if that is the case?

Wow!  That is a LOT of typing.  Thanks for doing that.  I will study it and try to get more familiar with the game.
Title: Re: How To Play Tujlub

The top does not need to be spin afterwards on Stage 3 thru Stage 8 as long as you knock down the stationary top.

The pattern for placing the target is exactly shown on the video. You have to make sure that you place on the target in the correct distance from the launching/hitting box foul line. The foul line is in the front of the launching/hitting box. You would measure the distance between the foul line and the target.

As far as I know, all players just measure in feet. When we measure the distance between foul line and the target, we would use a 75 feet measurement tape and mark the spot with a spray can.

Thanks for the great explanation of how the game is played.  It is now easy to understand.

How long a line is used on the TujLub stick?
Or, how many times is the line wound around the throwing top?
Title: Re: How To Play Tujlub
Post by: TujLub on September 22, 2015, 11:10:47 AM
The line is wound around the top between 16x and 18x. You wound the line base on your preference. For myself, I wound 14x.

The type of line is Decron. Make sure that it's a 80lb decron line.  Click the link below:

Thanks for this information.

What happens if a match ends up even?  Both teams with the same score.
How is the winner determined?
Do they play a tie breaker or sudden death match?
Title: Re: How To Play Tujlub
Post by: TujLub on September 22, 2015, 01:04:58 PM
If the score from both team is a tie, both team will only need to play Stage 1. Each player from the hitting team will take turn hitting the other opposing team spinning top. Then, the other team will take it's turn as well. At the end, the team with the most point wins.

Both teams with the same score it's rare. This sport requires technique, focus, and control.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge of this great game with us.  The details you are providing are fantastic and are answering many questions that arise while viewing the youtube videos of the many tournaments from around the country.  While the action is exciting on its own, knowing the rules and objectives of the game adds an additional level of interest.

I'm looking forward to your tutorials about preparing and throwing the tujlub and am hoping you will discuss whether the power and accuracy of the throws is primarily from the hand holding the tujlub or does the flick of the stick play a large roll in directing the tujlub at the targets.

I'm also looking forward to the continuation of the fabrication process of the plastic tujlub.

Thanks again for the effort and time you've given us in preparing all of this information.

I will provide in depth explanation on how to throw, how to spin, and wound a tujlub.

The power comes from the throwing. The control and accuracy comes from whipping the stick to direct the tujlub in the air. You must be able to balance the power of throwing and whipping. Your body posture plays a big role when throwing and whipping. Think of it when it comes to bowling. From the moment you release the bowling ball, your hands, feet, leg, and arm must follow thru and keep a proper body posture at the end of the release. Having a proper posture will have a little effect on the direction of the bowling ball.

salut TujLub !! (what is your name ?)

i enjoyed reading all the rules and with the videos , it's easy to understand
about the 2 different throws : when it gets to long distance stage 7...
are there any players specialists ? do you use longer strings?
are the tops all the same ? what is the average price for a top when bought on the field during a contest ?

thanx very much
after all this format is very British : team skills, strategy;regularity, togetherness

how long does a game last ?
over 2H i guess 8) 8)

salut

There are no specialist player. Everyone plays the best of their ability. You want to have a good control of your tujlub when throwing at a single target at any distance. The line is wound around the top between 16x and 18x. You wound the line base on your preference. For myself, I wound 14x. All tops are different sizes and I will explain it at later time. The average price for a tujlub is $45. The game usually last for an hour and half or shorter.

Everything super-clear. Thank you for recording those videos.

Your tops spin in the opposite direction (clockwise for right handed) than ours. I wonder if there would be any advantage for the target top to spin in the opposite direction (it does not seem to be forbidden by the rules).

I look forward to the videos on throwing technique. Thanks!

It's not forbidden. You spin or wound the tujlub base on your preference, whatever makes you feel comfortable. There is no advantage.

I will make a video for spinning and throwing.

The tujlub is made of some type of plastic, and I do not remember the type of plastic. I just uploaded a video on "How to Spin a Tujlub". I will make a video on  how to throw a tujlub sometime next week. If you are interested in playing tujlub, contact the person I posted on the forum. Tell him the size you want and he will make a tujlub for you. Once you have your very own tujlub, watch the videos and practice. The Hmong community in Minnesota and Wisconsin hosts the biggest tujlub tournament in May, July, and September. It will only take from 6 months to 1 year in order to know how to play tujlub. Make your own team and come play with us at our tujlub tournament for big money prizes!

Learning how to spin a tujlub is difficult for most beginners who are new to tujlub. I have to explain every steps in details as mush as possible. In May over the Memorial weekend and Labor weekend in September, the tujlub tournament takes place at Brown County Fairgrounds in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The tujlub tournament in Minnesota takes place over the July 4th Independence weekend.

Gather a team, watch my videos and practice. Then, come play with us!
Title: Re: How To Play Tujlub

Thanks again!

On the video you say that you are left handed but you are throwing right handed: is that correct?

One more question: there is no requirement for a direct hit, right? The tujlub can hit the ground first and then roll and hit the targets and it would still be valid.

Memorial weekend sounds good. I can see a little tour: a visit to Eric and the Schreiber school in Chicago, then drive to spinning top museum in Burlington, and finally the tujlub tournament in Green Bay. I just need 5 more players for the team. What do you say, Mike?  ;)

Title: Re: How To Play Tujlub
Post by: TujLub on October 04, 2015, 12:10:06 PM
I throw with my right hand and spin with my left hand. I just have to wrap the tujlub for the proper hand. It doesn't matter which hand you use to throw and spin. You need to make sure you wrap the tujlub for the proper hand. There is no requirement for direct hit. The tujlub can roll or slide on the ground and hit the target. You just have to make sure that you do not step on the foul line.

Since you are visiting the museum in Burlington, WI, you should go check out the tujlub players in Milwaukee. There are about 60 tujlub players in Milwaukee. The name of the park is called Carmen Playfield. The address is 7320 W Carmen Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53218.

Here is a short video that shows the players playing tujlub at Carmen Playfield in Milwaukee:

Well, this looks like a lot of fun.  I wouldn't mind trying it but the guy in the one video that hits everything has set a very high standard!!!

Memorial day weekend gives some time to practice but I have a couple other obligations at that time.  This sure looks like a good time, though.  I am guessing that that there might already be a couple of these tops made at the University of Cincinnati and that they already have a official field set up where they are practicing!!!

I do not know any tujlub players in Texas. However, there is a small Hmong population in Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston. If you do find yourself meeting a Hmong in within that area, you should ask about tujlub. Every year, there is a Hmong New Year in Texas. Google search "Hmong New Year Texas" for further search. The only states I know where there are tujlub players in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Colorado, California, and Rode Island.

Although you are not able to make it in GreenBay during the Memorial weekend in May, there is a tujlub tournament in Minnesota on July 4th Independence day weekend, and Labor Day weekend in Greenbay, WI. I will post up flyers when it gets close to the date of the tujlub tournament.

I don't want to feel old and poor :P so I just talked to Chia and his wife and ordered a couple to practice: one large for grass, one medium for dirt, plus one white target tujlub and two sticks (whips).

Chia's wife said that if I was young and strong I could use the "regular" size, which is the large one (about 1 pound). I first ordered two regular ones, but then chickened out and changed one to medium  :-[

I know Larry has distributed some tujlubs around. If you practice and get good, we can make a virtual team and then plan to meet at one of these contests. Even if we lose badly it should be lots of fun. What would be a good team name?

Hey, Dazzling Dave: you are from Minneapolis! And you are good at battle tops! This is right up your alley! You need to assemble a team! Spinnesota lives in Excelsior, not far away. (I moved some of the posts about buying the tujlub to the other thread)

I was practicing the throw today. I think I can throw pretty well in that the tujlub flies spinning with the tip down, but the problem is going to be accuracy. The targets are quite far. And the last stage at 70 ft away is a long, long way away! I think lots of practice will be needed to become accurate.

I noticed that if the hand with the top does the throwing and the hand with the whip just follows, I get a more accurate throw. But the top does not go as far.
If instead I lead with the whip, so most of the strength of the throw comes from the whip, I can throw quite a bit farther. Also the top spins faster. But then I am much less accurate. But I really like how this whip throw "feels".
Perhaps the secret is to perfectly balance the impulse given by the hand and the one from the whip. Practice, practice . . .

Yes!! Balance is everything!!

Throwing a tujlub is like bowling. The energy generates from the moment you take a step. As you take a step forward at a time, the energy flows from your feet and upward your body. When you release your tujlub, the energy gets release. Once the tujlub is release from your hand, your arm and upward body follows thru. Depending on which hand is use to throw the tujlub, one of the leg balances your body with other the leg follows thru.

As the target gets further and further, you want to throw the tujlub higher each time. You do not need to worry about having the tujlub to spin as much when throwing the tujlub at great distance. Therefore, you just need to focus more on throwing and less on the whip. You just need to apply more spin/whip when hitting Stage 1.

You can also throw the tujlub over shoulder instead of throwing/swinging your arm from your side. Throwing over shoulder is more accurate than throwing/swinging your arm from your side. When you throw over shoulder, your arm slightly bends 90 degree and the tip of the tujlub or metal piece is facing side way. When you release the tujlub over shoulder, the arm follows thru and the stick just need to point outward. Your hand holding the tujlub just need to focus on power and follow thru.

This video will show players throwing over shoulder by slightly bending their arms 90 degree. If you look closely, the tip or metal piece of the tujlub is facing sideways when throwing over shoulder.

A little video showing my spin on the ground:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvJjY7omkI4

It may look that I am wrapping it the wrong way at the end, but that is because I am holding the tujlub with the tip to my right (to have the feather at the end of the string out of the way).

Very nice. Thanks for sharing. I know in the past when we had our fighting club it was a lot of fun hitting the other top and then coming up with some smart remark. Fighing and Tricks go well together. It breaks it up. And it's a lot easier to learn fighting than tricks. I hope this catches on. I'm still trying to find the site you can buy the 3 1/2 diamenter plastic.

Your spin is good! Just keep on practicing!

From the moment you release your tujlub, bend your knee at 120° and lean forward when hitting close range.

Here is a lucky shot at about 46ft to the target. I used an overhand shot. The tujlub was the larger one.

Of course, like in bowling, even a beginner can make a strike from time to time.

Thanks!

Spinning on the ground is similar to spinning a whip top, so I had some experience.
The target shot was a lucky one. The big challenge is to do it consistently enough to be able to compete. I am sure it requires lots of practice.

I love watching the tujlub fly in the air while spinning!  :)

Tujlub takes practice! Consistency is the key! Once you have found your form and style of throwing a tujlub, just keep practicing and you will be able to hit any target. Tujlub is just like bowling. You can feel the energy flow from your feet and upward your body. The energy gets release from the moment you release the tujlub. Then, you follow thru and balance your body posture.

Title: Re: How To Play Tujlub
Post by: TujLub on October 21, 2015, 08:10:38 PM
I observed how you throw in the video. You have a nice whip when throwing the tujlub. When throwing tujlub at greater distance, you want to apply less whip and use more of your right forearm. If you want to increase the distance and power when you throw, you want to use more of your right forearm by throwing just a bit harder and applying less whip. From the moment you release the tujlub, extend your right arm more and swing your right arm across your chest. After the right arm swings across the chest, your right hand should just be about next to your lower left chest. Because of the amount of energy or power you generated, your body will thrust forward from the moment you release the tujlub. When your body thrusts forward, you want to balance your body posture with your left leg while your right leg follows thru and lifts off from the ground. When your right leg follows thru, the right leg will lift off from the ground and your left leg will balance your body.

Think it as if you are releasing a bowling ball. After you release the bowling ball, your body thrusts forward because of the amount of energy that was generated by your arm swing and the number of steps you took. If you release the bowling ball with your right arm, your right arm follows thru as well as your right leg. Your right leg will lift off from the ground and your left leg just need to balance your body posture by bending your left knee so that it will have a little effect on the direction of the bowling ball. This analogy also applies to throwing a tujlub.

Hopefully, this makes sense.

The photo below will give you a better idea. As you can see, the right leg is lift off from ground while the left leg balances the body. The right arm swings across the chest. After the right arm swings across the chest, the right hand is just about below the left arm.

Thanks for the advice.
I am going to experiment with the balance between right arm throw and the left arm whip action. A few times trying to use mostly the right arm, the tujlub gave a jerk to the whip and it was slowed down by the string: obviously too little whipping in that case. But I can see that the whip action is likely less accurate than the arm throw. On the other hand, I like the feel of the whipping action. :-\

The forecast is rain: no tujlubing (?) for a few days.  :(
Title: Re: How To Play Tujlub

The whipping is less accurate than the throw. You only want to apply more whip when hitting Stage 1.

Here is another method you can also try. You can also try flicking the tujlub by using your wirst. Flicking your tujlub with your wirst allows you to be accurate especially long distance throw.

Today I set up two cameras, one behind me and one at ground level behind the target top (with some wood beams protecting it). I wanted to film a hit at 70 ft (first time trying at that distance). Just when everything was ready I was called for family activities. At one point Diego, who is visiting from college, asked about one camera, so I explained to him what tujlub was and I offered to give him a demo. I couldn't believe it when I threw the Tujlub, it bounced a few times on the ground, and finally hit the target at 70ft! But I did not have the cameras on!  :( I could not try again until the sun was coming down but then I could not hit it again. I also broke the string on one of the whips (I am going to order a roll of the string suggested).

Obviously, the 70ft target is beyond what I can hope to hit except by luck at this stage, so I need to practice at the shorter distances. But I know Cecil wants to see that long hit!  ;)  I did concentrate on using more of my arm and shoulder on the throw and less whipping, with some success.

Today it was a nice day to be outside and I practiced Tujlub a little, mainly to the target at around 25 feet. But I also filmed the hit at 70 ft I could not get the other day. It was a ground skipping shot, not as satisfying as a direct hit, but probably a better game strategy.

Nice!

Where do you live? I was wondering if you can meet with the tujlub players in Minnesota over the Spring season. This way, you will have a in depth understanding on tujlub and make recommendation adjustments on your throw and spin. It's always nice to have someone to teach you in person.

That is a problem as I live in south Texas (San Antonio)! But in the past I have had good success learning to play spintops from videos, practice and experimentation. I am going to try to get other people (not necessarily spintop players) interested and form a team. I am also going to see if I can make contact with the small Hmong community that supposedly exists around here.

One day I will go to one of your major events.  :)

There is no tujlub in Minnesota during the winter season. Therefore, I am able to find a facility to play this sport. Tujlub is starting to spread and pretty soon, the facility will be fill with tujlub players.

This year of 2016, Ramsey County and Ciyt of Maplewood will be constructing 6 tujlub courts in Minnesota. The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2016.

Every year, over 50,000 attendees from around the globe attend this event. This event is not just a tujlub tournament. The event consist of other sports competition such as soccer, volleyball, sepak takraw, and flag football.

Each year, about 25 tujlub teams from across the US come to Minnesota and compete in the tujlub tournament. The teams are place in a bracket of 4 or 5 teams. Each teams play against other team within their bracket. After playing against all other teams within the bracket, the team with the lowest score is eliminated from the tournament. The other remaining teams move to the Quarter-semi final, and so forth.

It will be great for the forum members in Minnesota to come to this event and have an idea about this sport. We are hoping that if the word of mouth about tujlub expands across the US and other countries, this sport someday makes it to the Olympic.

Does anyone here play in that game?  Can anyone help in teaching me how to manufacture a stick with the string and getting a Tuj Lub top?

Thanks!

It is wonderful that you live in St Paul, Byan, and are interested in Tuj Lub. Please, keep us abreast of your adventures in this sport. Maybe you can convince other spintop players in the region (e.g. Dazzling Dave) to join you. I really hope that this sport expands outside the Hmong community. For the little I have tried it, it is a lot of fun.

Chia seems to have a tuj lub made of a translucent plastic. It looks nice!

It looks like the courts are made of smooth concrete. That would ensure that they last a long time but are probably rough on the tops.

The material lay out on the court is just heavy duty rubber. Conrete will damage the plastic tujlub. There will be 3 more tujlub courts open next year June of 2017 in Maplewood, Mn.

I love the short throw with the whip action. So the Tujlub looks like a 3.05 diamenter by 4.6 long? What is the line made of. How thick and how long. Maybe I will make one out of delrin, or what ever I can find.

The tujlub is 3.05 diameter by 4.6 long. The line is made of Dacron fishing line. Tujlub players use 50 - 80 lb Dacron fishing line.
