Title: OWB GIULIA
Post by: Sabaspin on September 29, 2014, 10:21:05 AM
I'm interested in getting a one way bearing tip for my Giulia, but yoyo-expert has been out for a while. Does anyone know where I can get one? I found some websites in Europe, but with shipping and exchange rate it is more expensive.
Thanks.

Boca Bearing has the one way bearing for the S8 tops:

www.bocabearings.com/bearing-types/one-way-bearings

I don't recall the size by heart.

Great, thanks for the link. I'll measure and figure out the size.

The owb is model HF0406. The dimensions are 4x8x6 mm (ID, OD, width) and it is here (http://www.bocabearings.com/bearing-inventory/One-Way-Bearings/50/4x8x6-HF0406) (the photo on the page is not the exact model).

Be aware that you need a tip that is OWB-ready. If you have a standard earlier bearing tip with a single diameter shaft, you won't be able to fit the owb as it has a smaller inner diameter than the regular bearings.

EDIT: For completeness, the regular bearings on the S8 tops are what yo-yoers call A-size: 5x10x4mm. The bearings for the Chico top are C-size: 1/8"x1/2"x3/16".

Thanks for all the info.

:o I have a standard tip, so I'll have to wait until I can find the OWB tip.

Send a message to Mr Yo. (Maurizio)
Me might still have a couple left.
I also think that the newer STB tips are OWB compatible if you can get your hands on one of them.
Good Luck! ;)

Thanks for the suggestion czyoyo.
Before writting to Maurizio I decided to remove the tip and double check and I think I have the right tip for the owb. Here is a picture.

Yes, you are lucky, that looks like a OWB-ready tip.  :)

Good for you!

Is that the stock tip on the Giulias now?

Yes! I got my Giulia about 4 months ago and came with that tip.

Found it cheaper at vxb.com (but I have not compared shipping costs):

Great, I had not ordered yet. I'll check them out, much better price.
Thanks.  ; :D

I'll be keen to know how these work.  I bought some that were a good fit (ebay I think?) but they didn't spin free enough to be useful.

I tried cleaning to no avail.  Seems some are better than others...

I ordered some OWBs from VBX and they worked great.

Did you flank the owb with regular bearings? They don't seem to work well by themselves.
In fact, even in the S8 tops, if you tighten too much the nut that holds the tip it will freeze the owb.

In my experience the owb will always slow down the bearings quite a bit.

I just got my OWB from VXB HF0406 :D
They don't fit into the Giulia chamber   :o  ??? :'(

That is strange. The ones I have on my tops have engraved the HF0406 code and have an OD of 8 mm.

 ???

When I read your post, I decided to measure the bearing with a caliper and it does measure 8mm, thought maybe it was oversized.
Plus the VXB and bocabearing are both listed as the same bearing model, so i guess they are the same bearing.
Tomorow I'll take out the tip again and measure the tops chamber and see.
No harm, hopefully I'll find one that fits.

Do you realize that the one way bearing is press fitted in the well? It needs to be tight so it can apply torque when it is regenerating. I won't just drop into the well as the regular bearings.

As you probably don't have the S8 tool, just use the tip (with a regular bearing) to press it in. If you have a very thin washer that you can temporarily add to the tip, it will give you an extra clearing between the bearings that helps.

Last night I pushed pretty hard, so today I measured with my caliper the chamber were the bearing goes and it measured a fraction of a mm less than the 8mm size of the bearing, but enough that no matter how hard I pushed it would not go in. So I taped some sanding paper to a screwdriver and sanded a little and finally got the bearing in.  8)
Thanks Ta0

I seem to remember reading that these OWB actually deform a little bit upon installation.  Some flex might be normal?

Not sure tho...

I ordered some bearings from vxb.com and included an HF0406 owb. When I got it I tried it on a Giulia: it fitted, but it is not identical to the ones from Maurizio.  Here is a photo; the one on the right is the original.

Both required some force to fit inside the bearing well. But I noticed that the new one also required some pressure to go over the shaft of the tip while the original one just slides over. Both stop the backward rotation fine but the original one spins much more freely in the forward direction. The one from vxb can still be used with an S8 top, but the original owb gives considerable longer free running "bearing times."
So, you are correct, poptop, there are differences even if they have the same part number.

i has question: why go to the trouble of buying the clutch from bearing retailers when you can buy the whole tip assembly with the OWB from yye?

Why buy the full tip if you already have a owb-ready tip and only need the owb?

I am curious if with a shaft just a tiny smaller the new owb would spin more freely.  :-\ In any case, after looking up how these owb work, I now realize that although the may look like roller bearings there is actually no rolling element. The contact in the direction of movement is purely frictional, so they can never have as low friction as ball or roller bearings.

I recently purchased a couple of HF0406 one way bearings from rcbearings.com.  A little cheaper than Boca or VBX, $4.57 each plus $2.99 shipping per order.  They arrived yesterday so I decided to install them in my STB (also a recent eBay purchase). I gave the bearing a quick cleaning with mineral spirits to remove some of the thick grease it came with.  I also gave the tip a quick spin on the lathe to polish the shaft with 1500 grit sandpaper and polishing compound.  I got close to a mirror finish before I lost patience and called it good.  I installed everything in the STB and it works well.  A little more resistance than normal bearings, but I am happy with the results.  I think it will loosen up a little more with use.

Thanks for the info, Spintowin. The price on rcbearings.com is very good.

The markings on the photo seem to be slightly different than on the ones I got.
