Title: Looking for tips
Post by: Sam on January 02, 2013, 02:43:15 PM
Hey Guys.

I have been playing around with my wood lathe over the holiday break and I've been getting better at using my tools. I've made a few tops and they are turning out pretty good. I'd like to find a good source for tips though.

I have some 1/2 delrin plastic rod that I turned out a few tips and they do pretty good. However I'd like to get some metal tips to try out. I really like the Strummol8 tips but I'm not sure my tops are good enough to justify a 20.00 tip  :-[ . If any of you has a good place to get some I'd be grateful to hear about it.

I don't have a grinder or metal lathe but I'll see if I can come up with some way to eventually make my own.

Thanks for the help.

Haha. I saw this thread and thought that you wanted tips on some trick or something. It turns out that you wanted actual tips. Silly me! ;)

I would have posted the same link as Dick. That's probably your best bet.

Thanks for the links. I'll order some and try them out.

Yea, czyoyo... I should be asking for more trick advice as well...  ;D

If I can suggest you something, make the tips in delrin or teflon, but hide inside them a steel nail, this ensure you to try different shapes and maintain enough strength against the ground fall. I think Chris agreeds with me

Thanks for the tip MrYo. With the nail you could make a thinner tip and not have it break when it hits the ground.

Do you just drive the steel nail into the delrin rod or drill it 1st?

I think my biggest problem with the plastic tips was getting them aligned to the top after they were turned. They didn't end up as level as I would have liked so I had to turn the tips a bit more to make it spin good.

I think with the next one I make I'm going to try attaching the rod to the top and then shape the tip.
