Title: Egyptop
Post by: Ketzaltlipoka on October 10, 2009, 10:35:25 PM
When I was a child, I remember one cartoon (caricatura) on tv where Spiderman fought against some egyptian pyramids, and even, He caught those pyramids with his spider web.

Some of you knows my ideas of string toys, like top, diabolo and yoyo, related to spiders and another insects that weaves their own string from his body, like the silk worms, mantis religiosas, etc.

But, all the time, since I was child. I `ve thought the relation between spin tops and pyramids. Both of them got almost the same form, the same characteristiques, (like a geometric figures).

I ignore if in Egypt, the ancient Egypt, the one of the pharaons, the spinning top was known. I know that have been found images of women juggling, with balls. In wikipedia says that the most old, ancient tops of the world have been discovered in the ancient Mesopotamia, the today`s Irak.

If you put one top with the tip aiming to sky, is almost a pyramid. This is curious, because the most important part of the Great Pyramid of Egypt, was the top, which was recovered of gold, according with History. A trompo without tip, is like a pyramid without its crown.

I know that some people can guess that I´m a little crazy, but those strange ideas have helped me, those abstractions have been important to discover new tricks.

There are three models of top, that are so beautiful, that are important to me. Are the Aztec, the Maya, and the Faraon.

The Faraon was discontinued recently, and it`s a shame, `cos the image in the cap, it`s wonderful.

Besides, there is a Lovecraft tale, that I read in spanish translation, called in spanish, "El morador de las Tinieblas", in which, it`s told about one strange device,..."El trapezoide resplandeciente" When I play at night with one Holo Light, I think that I am playing wit that trapezoide resplandeciente....

Me and my crazy ideas and strings and tops...spiders and other insects weaving strange tricks with their string coming out their bodies....pyramids and old nations...

There is a video in you tube (LINK (http://youtube.com/watch?v=S7RC0Mbzm0o)), marvelous..the images and the music are amazing...it`s Princess of Egypt. It will transport you to an ancient time.

eh eh ! salut Salvador
I like your introspections : it opens up new tracks for thinking
cela ouvre de nouvelles pistes pour penser
but the video clip you show is really too "new age"...the music is "musak" not traditional, and the images present an "onirique" vision of ancient egypt
i visited the mummy's room at the british museum in 1974 together with the "reserves" : it remains a strong experience : the smell, the atmosphere, i couldn't sleep for many nights ,  the pharaoh ' s curse : la "malédiction du pharaon"

i really wish we can meet some day , i imagine spending hours and days talking with you

' Luego , Amigo !! ;)

Wow! Finding that mural must have been striking for you. Where is it?

Yes, the Egyptians played with whip tops. As we discussed before (http://www.ta0.com/forum/index.php?topic=1471.msg14988#msg14988), one was found in Tutankhamen's grave, the earliest top with a known owner!

I just love that picture of the whip top from King Tut's grave.  It makes me want to whip a top to the Steve Martin song "King Tut"!!!

ha! In fact, the first time I saw it, in that then, I was not so sick about spinning tops.
that was many, many years ago. In my memories remained and little by little I was looking an opportunity to take a pic from it.

The mural is right inside the subway station Iztapalapa, line 8, here in Méxiko City.
I suppouse that has been there from the construction of this line. If you put a zoom over there, you can find the signature and the date.

Salvador sent me a link to an interview with the artist describing the mural: www.metro.cdmx.gob.mx/cosmos-o-la-historia-del-principio
The artist name is Janitzio Escalera and the work is: Cosmos o la historia del principio (Cosmos or the story of the beginning).
The top represents the movement that created the universe.

The mural is from November 1996 and it's located on the Iztapalapa subway station, Line 8. I think it could be a great photo opportunity for a player visiting Mexico City.

A photo of the mural from the article:
