Suddenly there is this whole culture of light bulb spinners. When did that happen, and how, and why? Does CFL play better than incandescent? And what about halogens? Has ta0 already posted spin decay curves so we can make informed decisions?

It was amazing to stand in the room and feel the electricity (no pun intended). Everyone was buzzing and you could sense the excitement. It was a great moment for top spinning and people talked about it the rest of the weekend.

You wind it exactly the same way as a top without a crown. You place the end of the string over the metal part and start wrapping over it, starting from the "tip" and up. Although Alan was the only one with previous experience, after a while most players were getting good spinners (the aim was not so good).
I need to apologize to everybody in the video: if you look somewhat heavier it is not because of the food at the Rosen but because youtube changed the format of my video from 4:3 format to 16:10. So everybody is stretched sideways! I need to check my other videos but Mike suffered the same widening on the stilts video . . .
I also should have credited on the video agentsac's wife, Patty. She did all the hard work of filming and also provided that wonderful background of exclamations! I'll add a note to the video.

Mark Hayward wrote to me and he is planning to have again a "Ultimate Battle Top Contest of the Universe" at nats. He hasn't started working on the trophy yet because he is a new home owner and has been very busy working on the house. Hopefully he'll manage to make one of his incredible trophies. It won't be a light bulb battle but those trophies create lots of interest. If you have not seen it yet, here is the video from last year:
