Title: 2800 years old depiction of whip top play
Post by: ta0 on December 09, 2013, 08:48:11 PM
This relief at the Archeological Museum in Ankara, Turkey, shows very early top play:

Hittite civilization, 9th-8th century b.C. Relief portraying two young people playing with a spinning top. From Carchemish, Turkey.

It has some similarities to the reliefs Salvador had discussed (http://www.ta0.com/forum/index.php/topic,2342.msg24056.html#msg24056), but this seems to be the real thing. Notice the top spinning on the floor between the players.

I love it that our toy has roots so ancient and widespread.

By the way, this is pretty old, but Tutankhamum was already playing with whip tops 500 years earlier in Egypt.

I really feel so excited to see things like these...ancient hittites playing with trompos.
centurys of History.
Centurys of play, centurys of joy, of contentment,
Immortal players remembered for ever on the Stone.
A lot of thing crosses my brain when I watch this marvelous art`s work.

I will make a shirt with that image...sure!!!
