Title: Market for Yo-Yo Jams
Post by: Apex on July 30, 2010, 07:57:16 PM
I am trying to get the funds up to go to worlds and I was wondering if the fine folks on this board would be willing to help.  I have a few old Yo-Yo Jam tops and I was wondering what the market would be for them.  I have a factory painted Jon Gates and a glow in the dark double pointed top dog.  I will post a couple photos later tonight but I was wondering if there would be interest and if so, do you think I would be better off selling them here or letting you all fight it out with the rest on e-bay?

Hey Apex!

It would be great to see you again at worlds! You would be a serious competitor in the Sport Division! And perhaps you could show us your horizontal corkscrew at the corkscrew workshop.

Now that the Strummol8 is out at $75, I would say for players the value of the Gates would be less than that. But for collectors it is a different story.  I think we have more or less resigned ourselves that YYJ will not be making new tops. The rumor two years ago was that they were about to make new Gates, but it never happened. Even if they did, they will never again make the double tip Topdog. And if the Gates is neither blue nor enyo green, it would be rare.

I don't know if Ebay or here would be better for you (Mike doesn't do Ebay but wants you to come  ;) ). Either way, you should not sell them for less than $70 each.

You are right, ta0, I want Apex to come to the Worlds......and the Whirled.  I might be able to help with at least one of those YYJ.

Enyo green?  Is that the regular enyo color?  Mine seems mostly white, I guess maybe greenish.

Alex, I hope to see you there!  It's been too long, I almost want to go to Kentucky ;)

Well, mine against a white background and with the light reflecting "flat" is almost clear translucent, with a little green tint.
But with a dark background and the light making the embedded glitter really sparkle, it is definitively emerald green, perhaps with a shade of teal. I can say this with confidence even though I cannot pass the Ishihara test! ???

Here is the gates I have.  I traded for it a few years ago and from what I am to understand it was painted at the factory.  The plastic appears to be the green but it is so much more. :-)

Here is the Top Dog DT.  It is glow in the dark and really does glow pretty well.
I will try to get a couple other photos when I get a chance to build a light box tomorrow to take some good photos.
All things being the same if I sell these I would rather someone here get them because I know they would be loved.

Mike I will be up for Whirled without a doubt. Rob any time you feel like visiting I would be glad to have you.

Wow!

With the expenses of worlds I shouldn't. But those are too good to pass up. I open the offers with $70 each.

I must admit I don't know what the rules are on the board about selling stuff let alone starting an auction.  I like where this is going but I don't want to start anything I am not supposed to.  If it is better etiquette to take this off the board and to personal messages I am cool with that.  I was just hoping to see if there was enough of a market to offset my lack of funds to make it to worlds.  So moderators let me know what the proper procedure is here.  I also have an all black Top Dog and a half black half green Top Dog DT.  I will try to get a few photos up on flickr so you can see the state of these tops.  These have been played with so I don't want anyone to think these are perfect but I do try to take care of my toys.
Thanks everyone.  I really hope to see you all at worlds.

As long as you sell spintop related stuff, use this section of the forum, don't open multiple threads to sell the same thing, don't post too many "reminders", and represent things truthfully, it is ok to sell, auction, trade, etc.

Wait, maybe I am getting ahead of myself?  Sorry, I just got a little bit excited about the tops and about Apex going to worlds.

I wouldn't mind having it  :D

Apex, we haven't really done an open bid quite like this before, but so far I don't see anything wrong with it, other than you should probably give a deadline.  I think the board in general appreciates a "members-only" opportunity to buy tops.

I agree. Since it looks like registration for worlds was extended to Wednesday, how about 10pm EST Tuesday night for these two. I can ship or hand deliver at worlds.

I am not completely sure if I ever before saw a glow-in-the-dark topdog. But I am sure I never saw a double-tip topdog that was glow-in-the-dark. I already have the regular plastic one but perhaps one day this one could be handy for a performance in the dark.  One could combine string tricks with hand displacements by grabbing the upper tip . . .  Ok, I convinced myself: $93.50  ;D

Here are the other two YYJ tops I have to offer.  They have been well loved which means they have been played.
The black one is pretty well scuffed around the edges but I have never noticed it being a problem when playing.  The DT is in pretty good shape, I only see one scuff on the plastic at the weight ring.  Take a look and if you are interested let me know by 10pm EST Thursday.
I would like to say that if you buy any of my tops and you are unsatisfied we can work something out.  I am not out to rip anyone off I am just trying to make it to worlds and still be able to make my mortgage when I get home.
Here are the photos of the other two topdogs I have to offer.

Looks like Neff and Ta0 get new tops.  How would you like to take delivery.  I will be going to worlds so I would be glad to hand deliver if you guys will be there. If you would like to have them before worlds or you are not attending worlds I can mail them out to you.  Cash on delivery would be preferred but if you are not going to be at worlds we can do paypal or work something out.

See ya at worlds, courier!  It will be nice to meet you Alex, I love that triangle trick you put up on you tube.  I now have a not-quite-as-cool-as-Apex-but-still-a-cool-trick... version.
