Title: Coronavirus and top meetings
Post by: ta0 on March 10, 2020, 01:10:08 PM
The corona virus thing is getting serious (Italy under lock down!). On the other hand, flights are getting cheaper by the day!  ;D In addition, I saw that United has the following policy:
Quote
For tickets issued March 3 through March 31, 2020, customers will be permitted to change free of charge to a flight of equal or lesser value up to 12 months from the original ticket issue date.  If the customer decides to cancel the flight, they can retain the value of the ticket to be applied to a new ticket without fee for travel up to 12 months. This applies to all tickets, all fare types, all destinations, all points-of-sale . . .
There is a very good chance that the danger will go away during the summer. It could be a good opportunity . . .

Edit: American and Delta now have similar policies.

i am sure you have been following all the amazing news because of the corona virus.  The Ivy League cancelled their basketball tournament for the men and women.  Then the very popular NCAA basketball tournament says it will go on but only with no fans in the stands.  Entire NBA teams are now quarantined because a teammate was found to be positive.  The latest shocking news I heard was that the NBA season is suspended.  But here is more.....the Ivy League has cancelled all spring sports.  To drive the point home even more I heard that actor Tom Hanks and his family have all tested positive for this virus.  This news will all touch us in some way as we plan for the future!!!

That's pretty crazy.
The yo-yo Gulf Bay Area in Houston has been canceled.
I had registered for a tango festival in Austin in 2 weeks and it was canceled. The bad thing is that I had tried to save money by getting a special non-refundable hotel deal . . .  >:(
I'm still hopeful that in the summer months this flu will go away in the northern hemisphere and Budapest will happen.

We had discussed in the past having a remote competition (US nats) using the internet. It might be a good time to reconsider it. Nowadays anybody can stream video from their phones.

As a retired MD, I strongly urge anyone planning on attending this event to get informed about the coronavirus risks involved -- not just to yourself, but to those around you.

This is a very serious global public health threat. Take your cues from the experts, not politicians, ideologues, and internet personalities with their own agendas.

Wow! I was camping two days with my son and when I came back today I found a slew of cancellations of everything imaginable.
Even if you and your love ones are not old or with compromised health, an influx of cases can overwhelm the health care system, and put us all at risk.

I still think that by August the travel bans and high risk in the northern hemisphere will be gone (but the corona virus is here to stay). So I'm still hopeful about Budapest.

PS: Jeremy: I had no idea you were a retired MD (in addition to a retired geologist)!  8)

Now there is not any toilet paper to be found in the local grocery stores.  It sounds like this is a problem around the nation.  Rats!  I guess I will have to find something else to stuff into my fire top to burn!!!

Seems like this thread should be in Latest Spin, where all the meeting threads are.

It's very much top-related at this juncture. And we all have a duty to do what we can to keep everyone as safe as possible. If that means passing up some meetings this year, so be it.

Although the COVID-19 will have a big impact on spintop travel and players, I agree with Jim that we should leave most of the discussion about it in the NSTR area. All the media is full of info about this and people coming to the forum will probably prefer to read about tops without it being drowned by corona discussions. Of course, specific event cancellations due to the corona virus should be posted on the main board.

By the way, I'm guessing that in the US we are probably still 2 weeks away from the worst. It seems to me that the response of the government has been quite abysmal.

From a different perspective, scissor and knife sharpening: I have had 3 major sewing events (quilt shows, retreats, etc.) plus sewing shop classes cancelled or postponed due to restrictions on number of people at events.
Our retirement community (about 300 folks, mostly 70 to 100+ ages) is essentially in lock-down. No visitors, deliveries only to the front desk, no meetings, no activities (church, fitness, salon, etc.) and meals are delivered to your residence. We are really being sure that NO ONE gets the virus and spreads it to ALL of us.
Stay well, Dick

Dear friends,
we are in really danger, not only Italy but the whole world.
The virus isn't so much deadly but is really fast to spread and almost one of six infected goes really bad and need tu be intubated and sedated in intensive care.
This is the real problem too much people needs intensive care in the same time and we don't have enough to cure all.
The most of the dead had health problems and are over 60 (too young!) but there are healthy young too.

We are closed at home, only one could go to the market or to get medicines.

Stay at home, don't hug, shake hands or kiss anyone. stay over 1mt away from other people, wash your hand thousand times deeply.

Don't be worry, but prevent the infection risks.

Please stay safe, an hug from Italy.

News from Spain

Spain is in alert because coronavirus. School, universities, restaurants, cinemas are closed for govern order. Industries, como of the work but with the workers far away each other's. People are at home, it is forbidden  go out, we only go out if we go to the supermarket, hospital or emergency.

Army, for first time in the history of Spain, is in the streets of the first cities of Spain.

Italy is worst, France is bad, germany too, etc.

In Spain 500 deads, 12000 infected and this numbers increasing. The virus is with us only one month. It is important we act very first, virus don't know about borders, money, or anything.

In this moment Europa is bad, but in future it is possible in many countries.

Be careful and I hope better moments.

Same here in Belgium,
Every non food store is closed.  And even then you need to be  careful!
Supermarkets are open, but only a few People at a time are allowed.
For now, everyone needs to stay home.  Only when you need to go to the supermarket or get some medicines.
But we are still allowed to go for a walk or go cycling.
Im worried about my dad and his wife,  they are both sick  (don't know if it's corona virus ) they are home.
Need to take antibiotics,  and have a light fever.
My grandmother has weak lungs,  stomach and heart problems. So we keep a distance.

We are very careful, and try not to worry much.  That worrying is making people sick too.

Take care everyone,  wash your hands frequently and keep a distance!
Hopefully it wil be over soon .

The coronavirus tragedy unfolding all over the globe is cause for great sadness. But laughter is still the best medicine at home -- for stress reduction if nothing else...

Randy Rainbow (his real name) puts out some of the best political satire around in musical form. His online following is huge, and fans of his lyrics and performances include greats of musical theatre the likes of Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Be warned: Most of Rainbow's videos poke merciless fun at the current US administration. But he puts that aside here to promote civic duty.

It is a grim reality that no country is going to be spared of this pandemic and it will be tough, very tough. Italy and Spain are already in the mist of the worst, France and USA will soon be there, Mexico in a couple of weeks (and worse as per Obrador's completely irresponsible statements). This community has people all over the word. I feel I have top friends everywhere, some who I know personally and others only online, and just writing to everyone feels overwhelming. Please, feel free to write on this thread how you and your family are doing, if you find that helpful.

Take care.

My wife and I are both at high risk for severe COVID-19 disease by virtue of age and other reasons, and our son's at some risk for getting the virus as a supermarket employee. We admire him for soldiering on but still worry. We also can't have him over anytime soon.

But so far, everyone's healthy. Complying with Colorado's statewide order to stay at home. And grateful that I already have enough LEGO in stock to keep building tops for several months.

Our local peak is probably still 2-3 weeks out, but my heart goes out to everyone in more dire straits.

Keep yourself and everyone around you as safe as possible and keep your spirits up as best you can. Laughter really is the best medicine.

LEGO can be a powerful medium. Public service builds like this one from Instagram are starting to make the rounds...

And some builds are being repurposed. A fellow LEGO club member made this one for last month's monochrome building challenge. The caption was added later...

Don't be these guys. Keep your distance in public places.

Me and my family are doing good , but I'm worrying about the elders in our family.
And I worry about you all,  and the elders who may be at risk .

Hope it's over soon, that we don't need to live in fear, for losing people.
Take care,  and keep spinning and laughing  :D

For big gatherings to become safe again, nearly everyone would have be immune one way or another. That's very unlikely to happen by July.

Very interesting. His Atari shirt made me laugh.  I wondered who that woman was holding the baby to the left of the piano, but then she never moved.  I eventually figured out it was a statue.  Looked to me like a priest holding a young child.  His recognitions of everyone watching was fun.  I noticed the keyboard on top of the piano but I thought it was just there for storage.  I was surprised when he started playing it.  That's a good idea!!!  He really jammed out on that Amazing Grace.  I loved it and wish I could do just a little bit of it.

Thanks Jim!!!

There'll be a lot of nostalgia for things we used to love doing before this is all over -- big public meets and displays, spinning with friends, browsing brick-and-mortar stores for new spintoys, etc.

A psychologist on Coloado Public Radio yesterday said that seemingly small losses like these can pile up into a genuine grief that we brush off at our peril. And the only really effective way to deal with it, given that we're still social primates at heart, is to talk through those losses with a sympathetic human. Your dog is a poor substitute.

Our forum exchanges may be several steps removed from a consoling face-to-face, but I think they have an important new role now.

When they canceled the US national yoyo contest this June in Phoenix they were still hoping to have it later in the year. But I think it's going to be difficult.
I'm thinking we will have the US top contest in a virtual fashion, unless things clear up by the time Miamisburg comes around . . .  ;)

So they have cancelled the nationals in Phoenix?  That is news to me.  The website talks like it "may" have to be changed.

If there are still problems with gatherings in late August and people want to meet face to face, we can talk about other dates in Miamisburg.  September and October we still have good weather outside.  It gets more unpredictable in November and December.

With hair places rightly closed, mine’s getting way too long for comfort. Realized in the shower today that I could cut most of it myself with a #4 guard on my beard clippers. But what about the back? Kathy’s game to try, but a lot of guys are on their own.

Then I had a really scary thought: What if our coronavirus pandemic spawns a mullet outbreak?? :o

In two papers this weekend there were articles about cutting your own hair!  USA Today had a full page of pictures and diagrams of how to do it......but very very little about cutting the back of one's head.  It seems to me that people are pushing hard for the resurgence of the mullet.

My wife will be cutting my hair tonight -- her first time ever. Have been especially nice to her the last 2 days, and politely but firmly asked for no mullet. But who knows what I'll get?  ???

Tooling around in my convertible with a white beard and pony tail like ZZTop would be pretty cool. But I don't think I'd be able to tolerate the ugly transition.

Kathy just gave me my first quarantine haircut. Not sure who was more nervous.
Better yet, didn't find any of these...

Ha! You must have lot's of free time to build lice on a redhead scalp (with some gray hairs) out of Lego!  :D
Thanks for the laugh!

Spread laughs, not coronavirus, I always say! Ditto for lice.

Posted the head louse elsewhere last year as a joke in a very different context. Took an hour at most to build. Internet searches suggest that it could be the only LEGO head louse ever seen online -- a dubious distinction if ever there was one.

Hmmm, wonder if it would spin with the legs straight out to the sides?

Hmmm, wonder if it would spin with the legs straight out to the sides?

Yes, it will -- if lousy 3-second spins with lots of wobble count.

(https://i.ibb.co/cryW4Gz/20200427-160045.jpg) (https://ibb.co/pL1HYtC)

Finding a way to mount the blue ball tip almost exactly below the center of mass (CM) was something of a miracle, but no luck mounting a coaxial stem. So I just grasp the waist and give it a quick twist of the wrist. Sloppy releases are hard to avoid and no doubt contribute to the wobble. Pretty sure I could get longer, smoother spins with a decent stem to twirl.

Some of the wobble may also relate to the bug having bilateral but no rotational symmetry -- not even 2-fold. That and the elongated shape give it 3 very different central principal moments of inertia, with the axial moment through the CM and tip the largest, and the transverse moment along the midline, the smallest.

In my experience, smooth spins don't require perfect 3-fold or greater rotational symmetry about the intended spin axis, as you often read in textbooks. As long as you have dynamic balance about the spin axis, minor substructures of lesser symmetry will be tolerated. But we're nowhere near that here.

Priceless quote from a noted Emory University epidemiologist on the danger of having an adjacent state relax COVID restrictions too soon...

"It's like having a peeing section in a swimming pool."

For much of the world, surely applies to adjacent countries as well.

A lot of the people around this hobby are in the hospitality and entertainment industries. As just an example, the biggest Mexican spintop company has stopped assigning work to all its demonstrators and doesn't even answer their telephone calls. Below is a post by Mark Hayward on Facebook that summarizes well the situation. Those of us who are not affected as hard by the pandemic, let's try to support them if we can.

============
By Mark Hayward 7/10/20
(Copied from a friend & edited to fit my life)

I have worked in the hospitality, attractions, and entertainment industry for over 30 years and have never been through anything like this.
Not 9/11 nor Hurricane Katrina nor the 2008 financial debacle had this multi billion dollar effect for so long with no end in sight.
Our industry was/is hit hard by COVID-19.
Broadway is closed until 2021.
Cirque du Soleil has filed for bankruptcy (debt restructuring) and cut 3500+ jobs..
Disney and Universal have massive furloughs and layoffs, as most future capital improvement projects have been put on hold, or scaled back drastically.
Cruise ship entertainers and production teams are out of work.
This country’s hotels are at the lowest occupancy and most of the sales teams and employees have been furloughed or laid-off.
Bartenders and Servers don’t have enough customers and tips to pay their bills. Valets and Bellmen too.
Our travel agent and tour operator friends cannot book trips.
Theme park productions have no idea when they will be recalled.
There are no concerts or touring productions.  The worldwide convention business has shriveled up.  Movie theaters are dark.
The film and television industry are completely stalled right now. (Enjoying the re-runs yet?)
Museums, who already run on low resources and funding, have no clear future in sight.
Performing arts organizations of all kinds — choirs, theatres, orchestras, dance companies — are all trying to figure out on a daily basis how to keep going and employ anyone they can in the field.
12,000,000 people in the US and $38 Billion per year industry cannot reopen until mass gatherings can happen again.
So when you see your hospitality and entertainment friends begging you to wear masks, understand that we are helplessly watching our industry crumble before our eyes because the country is doing so poorly at reducing the spread.
This *IS* personal for us. My closest friends and members of my extended family have LOST their jobs. Not just furloughed, terminated!
PLEASE wear your mask (over your mouth AND your nose). Practice social distancing (6ft or more, 15 while training & exercising). And wash your hands....

Hey, did you guys know that Zoom offers an "Enhance my appearance" setting??

Just heard about it today on a family zoom. Could have been more a request than a tip, now that I think about it. But it really did made me look better: Smoother skin, whiter teeth, sexier smile, the works. Even smoothed over some of the rough spots in Quarantine Haircut #4. Also made my wife and the paint on the wall behind us look better. Now I'm wandering the house with the laptop "enhancing" everything in sight. This changes everything!

So far, it doesn't allow you to pick a new persona -- like Claude Van Damme with his shirt off.

But homemade deep fakes like that are just around the corner. Heaven help us then!  :o

Hard to imagine a Zoom enhancer and a life of a gig performer.  There is an article in USA Today about gig workers shifting to new roles and challenges.  Sounds like grocery delivery service is a job that is getting a lot of activity.  I did not know Broadway was closed.  Cirque du Soleil filing for bankruptcy is shocking.  I feel for Mark as well as all our spinners in Mexico and elsewhere.  Ironically, our bike shop friend Rick is so swamped he is working overtime and has hired two more workers for his little shop.  Today I saw where his empty showroom floor was full of bikes again.  I thought he just received lots of new shipments.  No, they are all bikes that need to be repaired....there was no room in the back for all the bikes needing repair!!!  The world has turned upside down in so many ways!

One month later after my last post on this thread, I am here to announce that somehow I got the COVID-19 virus.  I kept sleeping on Monday but was up and ready to go on Tuesday.  I walked five miles but had a low grade fever and a bit of a sore throat.  Just to be safe I went to get tested.  I am pretty shocked about the whole thing.  I am just trying to piece everything together after the call from the clinic.

as you say: low grade fever and sore throat. you are luckely not on intensive care, thanks God!
but I would be shocked too, if I hear the test was positive. I'm worried about you,and to all people who are vulnerable.

please get well soon.

As a retired MD, I have 2 pieces of advice...
1. Laughter really is the best medicine, so keep a sense of humor.
2. Insult the virus 3 times a day. You know, like, "Yo mama has saggy protein spikes."

Oh! @#$% >:(

I cannot say I'm too surprised. Your job as a preacher put you at high risk of exposure.
If the fever gets high or you have difficulty breathing, don't hesitate to go to the hospital. Many people are going too late and in worse shape than they should be.
Now they know much more of how to treat it effectively.
But otherwise, take it easy. For most people it doesn't get bad.

Take care, my friend.

Thanks everyone.  I must admit, this has been a little bit more than I anticipated.  I slept a lot the first day and then thought I was getting stronger and stronger.  But the sleep just keeps hitting me.  Dawn got it about the same time as me.  There is a slight possibility I got it from her.  Yes, they called to try to track where I have been and how I may have contracted the virus.  I had no good ideas or help for them.  Dawn had trouble with headaches.  I did not have that problem but I did have a sore throat for several days.  That part feels pretty good right now.  I am thankful that I am allowed to walk outside during quarantine time, I just have to stay away from people.  It is good to be able to get outside and move around a little bit.

So glad to hear that. When my niece got COVID, she was too weak to get out of bed for 3 weeks, and the muscle pain was quite intense. She's OK now.

Wish more people understood how nasty an infection this is. A full recovery can take months. Hope yours is quick.

Sounds like a good time to hole up in Corsica. Stay safe, my friend.

If US hospitalizations and deaths continue to explode, we may get there, too. But not till January 20, 2021 at the earliest. And by then, our healthcare system could be totally overwhelmed.

Many of the frontline healthcare workers who manage to survive COVID in the US will be left with lifelong PTSD -- in part from the betrayal by a large segment of the American public. In their willful abdication of personal responsibility against COVID, these Americans effectively treat their potential saviors as expendable medical machines with no lives or family or feelings or sanity of their own to protect.

I hate my country..
Belgium is doing worst of whole Europe!
Wish the Belgian people would LISTEN for once.
I'm doing my best. Disinfect my hands when I get off the bus and when done shopping , keeping my distance and wearing a mask.
Of course the government was too late to react.
The rules are too 'fluffy'. Not everyone knows exactly what is forbidden and what not.
For example : people can go to 'red' countries, for vacations.
Its not forbidden, just ' not recommended'.
More and more people are breaking the 'rules'.
And know we have the most infections of all Europe.

Hoping it will be all over soon. But I fear that we won't have a merry Christmas this year with the family.
All for the best. We need to take care of our loved ones.

It's such a small country.
Quess the people here think 'I can't get sick'. Especially the younger ones.

Not much different here in the US. Another thing that might open some eyes: Widely publicized widespread shortages of staffed intensive care beds.

The only thing worse than landing in the ICU: Getting turned away when that's where you needed to be.

Hi Jim,
I heard it on the news. Sorry to hear that..
I don't understand it either. People who need to work till 5:30, need to get home .
And yes, people need to eat too . So what about people who work full time and then still need to go the supermarket..
I don't think the government thought about that, actually.

Hopefully the virus will become a mere cough, and one day, we will be able to get back to normal again.
It can only go the good way, once the vaccination starts. Hope it will be soon.

Keep safe and healthy.
Warm greets
Hydrona

Another article in the paper about the stringent 6pm to 6am curfew in France.  Quebec, Canada has a 8pm to 5am curfew.  The article talks about how it has frayed nerves: notably a woman walking her boyfriend on a leash at 9pm arguing that this was legal under the curfew rules.

Title: Re: Coronavirus and top meetings

We've been fully vaccinated since late January. And until last week's set of CDC guidelines, our behavior changed little -- mainly due to very low but non-zero probability that we could pick up an asymptomatic case and unwittingly infect someone else.

Our son is due in the next few weeks. Once he's fully vaccinated, lots of pent-up hugs will come spilling out, I'm sure. And he'll start coming by to do his laundry again no doubt.

There's a theater aspect to all of this. If everyone who's vaccinated stops masking and social distancing, many of the unvaccinated will stop, too. Case rates in the latter group will then go up, giving the virus more chances to make new variants that might be more resistant to existing vaccines.

Very tricky stuff.

Yes, it does sound like very tricky stuff.  Oddly enough, I had a dream last night about having our Miamisburg top fest this summer.  There were lot of happy people there and I think I remember a few still wearing masks.
