2023 Online World Contest

Post by ta0 »

The International Board of ITSA has approved the rules for the 2023 ITSA World Online Spintop Contest.

Image

The deadline to register is July 17th and to submit the video is Sunday July 30th.
The award ceremony is Sunday August 13th.

The rules are here: https://spintops.org/2023-online-rules/

Two BIG announcements:

1. Players that place high on the online contest will be seeded to the finals on Sunday at the in-person contest in Tokyo and will not have to compete on the preliminaries Saturday.

2. It is highly likely that there will be significant travel grants for the best scoring players to help them compete at the contest in Japan. The promoter (SpinGear/Taka) will provide a large contribution, in addition to what ITSA can raise. Taka would like the largest number of players to attend, so instead of covering all the costs, most of the grants will be between $500 to $1000. ITSA's grant(s) may cover the difference for one player or go to other players.

I believe this will be a very important step forward for the sport.

That's so nice news!
I really appreciate what ITSA have done for the online contest and what you will do for it. We JTTF promote the contest in Japan as usual.
Both big announcements are so great! We Japanese player look forward to seeing a lot of players from all over the world!

I understand that the online contest won't give the world title to the winner. Did I understand it correctly? Is it just an international title?

Of course I will devote myself to take the video!

The title of "2023 ITSA World Spintop Champion" is reserved for the in-person contest.

The online contest is worldwide and the name of the contest includes the word World (2023 ITSA World Spintop Online Contest), so we cannot stop the winners from claiming that they are world champions. But the list of World Champions at the ITSA site will be for the winners of the Open Division of the in-person contest, except for the years of the pandemic that will have the online winners.

Ha! I was curious if Texture or Jun would be the first to register. Last year they were 1 and 2, respectively. This year, Jun beat Marcus. :D

Colombia, of course, beat Mexico, with Jhon Betancur the 3rd competitor overall (traditional, although I know he can also play plastic tops).

From past experience, I expect a tide of Colombians before the first Mexican registers. ;D

One of the things I wanted to do most is to register earlier than Texture. 😃

I have a question about the seeding for the in-person world contest. Is it possible for competitor who get a high place in Traditional freestyle division to get the seeding? If so, is he or she get a seeding of Traditional freestyle division?
I think that the former in-person world contest didn't distinguish the Open divisionfrom the Traditional division in terms of the registration.

Good question. How the Traditional Division will compete in the in-person contest has not yet been decided (separate or together with open). But the best Traditional freestyles will get seeded for the finals.

I created a page with the list of competitors registered. The first five are from Japan (2), Colombia (2) and USA (1).

https://spintops.org/2023-competitors/

Can we beat the record of 100 competitors registered from 20 countries?

So far we have 12 competitors from 4 countries registered (Japan, Colombia, Mexico and USA) in all 4 divisions.
There is no incentive to register early but if you think you will be competing, it does help us if you do.

The deadline to register is only 1 week away. We have so far 19 players registered for the online contest. I believe most players are waiting until the deadline to register. But it would really help if you register before the deadline so the work of processing them is spread over several days. You can register now and pay later (or ask for a waiver of the registration fee if you don't have the money).

I'm not sure if Kanta, who won the Open division the last two years, will compete this year online. I suspect not. I would take advantage of that ;)

Taka wants to maximize the number of international players, and specially the number of countries, that compete in Tokyo. If you compete online you have a great chance of being offered help to go to Tokyo. Sometimes dreams come true . . .
