comments and propositions for World Contest
« on: November 14, 2021, 01:22:46 AM »

hi all
I put out my jacket of chairman, sit at the desk, and write
a few remarks following the world contest

countries:
Colombia gets 1st place in 2 categories : women and traditional
Japan gets 1st place in Open and 3rd in women and traditional
the USA gets 2nd and 3rd place in open and 2nd in women

so I would say that overall , the results are balanced even if the scores
are very tight in most categories

players:
Kanta , with no doubt has produced the most advanced freestyle ,
with flow , creativity , high level of difficulty and style .
The top 3 in open are young and it shows that the passing of skills,
from one generation to another, works.

format:
In the future , I'd personally like to have a separate chonkake category
because the style of play is so different and the number of players so large that
it deserves a special status ...we 'll have to debate on this topic
with the new board of directors (the general assembly takes place in December)

judging /results:
We had a very solid group of judges thus making the results undeniable
that'a very important asset , it contributes to the credibility
and fair-play of the world contest
as for the award ceremony , we could do a lot better :
it's too long ,with a lack of showcase and fun,
if you're not involved it's quickly monotonous and hard to follow (...)
plus , sorry Jorge ;-) the production on line is far from a tv level

I think that next year we should have the award ceremony filmed in a theatre,
with a stage,an MC and 2 or 3 people announcing the results,
pre-cut videos of the finalists showing their best tricks,
instead of starting their freestyle and cutting after 1mn
very often the best tricks appear at 2/3 of the vid or at the end..

it would also be sensible to have one person representing each country
saying a few words of encouragement or congratulation
because again yesterday it was difficult to know who was who, there was hardly any interaction
between receivers and transmitter (except at the end between taka and jorge)

well this is maybe too critical*
but in a positive way

to conclude
i want to remind everybody that after 2 mandates of 3 years ,
TA0 aka Jorge and I JIM will step down as treasurer and chairman of ITSA
and in case you didn't know, the whole "thing" relies not only but mostly on 2 persons

example for Worlds : we couldn't find time to tap various potential sponsors/donators
i had a list : toupieshop,trompospace,hamleys,netjuggler,jouéclub,etc
but lack of time (and health problems)
Jorge did the judging , the contacts , the excell files, the entry fees ,the zoom thingy,
the award ceremony, the feedback on the forum etc etc ...

this situation CAN be improved

prepare your commitment for the general assembly in December

cheers
jim

I mostly agree with what you wrote.
The judges barely had time to finish scoring so many videos during a work week and I was preparing the normalized score sheets until midnight on Friday. It was my intention to make highlight reels but did not have time. Nor could I prepare much for the Zoom meeting. Yes, we can do much better.
The general assembly will be a good time to discuss the future online format.

PS: You can watch the recorded award ceremony on the ITSA Facebook page.

One thing I did not have clear about the contest is the number of attempts that were allowed to record the video. For both of my videos, I thought I only had one attempt, just like a performance on stage.

Was that the case?  ???

Also I agree about every single thing Jim said.

What?  :o   :o   :o
There was no way of enforcing just one take. You could record it as many times as you wished!!!

If it's a consolation, there were other entries that were filmed in one try. Brian Gaspar, who was second on Traditional, likely had just one try in front of the public (as a professional, he does this routine all the time). I believe the routines in the park from the Chonkakegoma club were also one try.

If you're looking for volunteers to help out with an online format next year, I have experience presenting on zoom and other online platforms. I'm happy to help out. Please reach out to me if you're interested.

Thanks to everyone who made the time in their busy schedules to make the event possible!  :-*

We discussed this after last year's contest, no changes were made but I understand how much time it would take from our volunteers to get this organized and sorted out. IMO it should be a minimum of three divisions with three judges for each division: Open, Columbian, Chonkake. Top three of Columbian and Chonkake could be automatically entered in Open.

Thank you for all your work judges, and of course ta0, many hours dedicated to this.

First of all, I appreciate what ITSA, judges, competitors, and all have done for the contest this year. We JTTF hope to meet you all in the contest next year, Japan and have a good time.

I agree with the idea that making a chonkake category because they have different play style from koma in Japan. If the category is made, I would like to be a judge but I also would like to be a competitor in Open division. If a competitor are allowed to judge a division which they don't register in, it helps us with a lack of judges, I think.

Congratulation all!

You know, starting a Japanese forum wouldn’t be a bad idea.   8)

Thanks Jun for volunteering to judge the Chonkakegoma entries in the future. I think the best should still be included in the traditional or open division. So you could do the qualification of the finalists. Even if they compete against you in the finals, I think we can trust that you would not eliminate a routine that is as good as to be competitive for the top positions.

Top three of Columbian and Chonkake could be automatically entered in Open.

I suggest the top 5 on Chonkake and top 5 on Trompo. I suspect they can become very competitive in the open division in the future. Juan's trompo routine was certainly competitive and there is no reason why a chonkake routine could not be.
One day we may have to do this with every style: "Mexican" (less than 60 gr), "performance" (61 to 150 gr), koma, large . . ., and have the best 5 on each style fight for the open division.

yeah amen to that,
however lets get away form power houses (in france the metaphore is" usine à gaz")
keeping things simple, visible and accessible to a large number is important

to me ,one of the priority ,for Worlds on vid, is to drag more countries
think of Brazil , Nigeria , Indian , China , Argentina etc ....

to be continued

Thanks for Jim,Jorge and all judges. You gave us motivation to keep spinning.

For Chonkake people, they do not care about competition results ,but had fun with competing with different country. For older people ,it is good opportunity to show their skill to young, and for young, they have motivation to compete with Spintop and Trompo,so can improve more in the future. So far,no need separate ,and in traditional division ,they can compete each other in Chonkake group.(7th Kibou and 10th Momotaro is 1st and 2nd in Choncake category).
I want to see the results in Open division for chonkake,so if they can merge to Open (top 5?) ,that is great.

For Japan community,Jun and other young player set up organization.I will help them and hope it works to glow up our local and world wide community.
