Rubik Top (Hybrid Toy Project)
« on: September 28, 2021, 09:39:56 AM »

Hello everyone,

My name is Patricio, I'm Chilean, I'm 25 years old and I'm an engineering student.
I like twisted puzzles and spinning tops, although I'm not very good at doing tricks, the only trick I know how to do is the boomerang.

Lately I have been working on a project that joins my two hobbies, I hope to be delivering images of each advance in this same publication.

I attach some images below,

Welcome aboard, Patricio!

Very cool idea. The completed top's shape is quite elegant.

Q: How does the top hold together against centrifugal force at speed. Or is it not meant to spin?

Welcome to this forum Patricio!
Your hybrid toy will go down with this community far better than the fidget spinner puzzle thing I mentioned here.

Wow! What a cool project!  8)

How much can it be scrambled? I can see that planes can be rotated but it's difficult for me to visualize further scrambling.

If you ever are successful I want one! I think you could make it into a commercial product if you pursue it. If not, I would like at least the files to 3D print one.

Welcome to the forum, Patricio! I think you are the first one posting from Chile.

Welcome to the group, Patricio. Very interesting top, how do you make it?

Looks like an interesting project! If it can spin than it would be very amazing.   8)

By "twisted puzzles" I wonder if Patricio is referring to a Rubik's cube.  That would make this even more interesting....

"twisted puzzles" I wonder if Patricio is referring to a Rubik's cube.  ....
He is also in another forum that  I happen to be in : twistypuzzles.com
And yes the Rubik's cube is by far the most famous twisty puzzle but there are literally thousands more.
A definition found here:
Twisty Puzzles A three dimensional twisty puzzle is usually made of a set of pieces that can change their position through a group of operations, obtaining different combinations. Physically, the rearrangement of positions is done through the rotation (twist) of some pieces around a point of the polyhedron (which may represent one of the pieces of the puzzle), which is usually located at the center of a face or a corner.
Often the puzzle pieces have one or more colors and the solved state is represented by the position in which each face of the polyhedron contains pieces of a single color.

Thank you very much for your comments and the welcome you have given me.

It is indeed a Rubik's cube in the shape of a spinning top, so it is not solved by colors but by the shapes of the pieces (once it is mixed).

As for the spinning is something I still have to investigate, but my idea is that it can spin as a spinning top as well. I think I will implement some features that modern cubes have, an internal anti-pop system and magnets in order to make it as stable as possible.

For now I am making the hub caps and I have to consider the millimeters needed for the holes where the screws will pass through.

I am designing it in Onshape, the truth is that there are several steps, but the program is quite intuitive, with the help of tutorials on the web I have helped me a lot.

My idea is that this project can reach the market if I'm lucky, but if not I will gladly share the file (I still have to finish of course).

I got Calvin's Puzzle to mass produce my 2x4x6 Fisher modification, I guess if I present a good prototype and if I have the support of both forums maybe they will consider mass producing it too.
The truth would be a dream come true since I had thought of this project before the 2x4x6 Fisher.

Best of luck in this project! If you could add functioning top to this puzzle's resume, I'd buy one for sure.

PS: Will also look into Onshape.

Maybe you could post a link here where people can buy it, or at least have a look to know what it is all about. Even better would be a short video that is showing your 2x4x6 Fisher modification in action. (Be warned Patricio, some people here are blaming me that I would give homework to others that I myself would never do! Of course that is not even 90% true.)
