I think I may try to make one out of hdpe.  Problem is I don't have a lathe, so I will have to make a form, or maybe try to chuck something up in my drill press.  Did you put any kind of tip on it?  Seems like even a metal tack would be helpful.

I used a bronze furniture nail.
