book with tops
« on: December 23, 2014, 12:22:54 AM »

hi all
i have just found this book on a street market
it's the fac-simile of a book published early 20th century
it describes various experiences involving physics
as written in the introduction , the children of today should not follow the instructions given, as they often involve matches, alcohol, knives and a lot of other hazardous materials

there are 3 experiences with a top
the egg top
the kinetic top : here as a help to mix colours and patterns on a cloth
the "tracing" top to draw : the pencil is not located at the tip but on the side of the disk
there is also a crazy set up with 2 cups which turn on a bottle with burning alcohol !!!!

good find for 50 cents ;D ;D

 :)

I have seen many drawing tops but I am not sure if I have seen one with an eccentric pen. If it doesn't kill the spin is could give more interesting spirals than the usual coaxial setup.

The steam device is hilarious! From the description, the blimps are made of egg shells! It is the closest I have seen to a true steam propelled top, standing on a tip. However, I doubt that if the center of mass was higher than the cork the spin rate would be enough to keep it upright.

Good find!

I cannot believe you found that.  You must have been looking through countless books and countless street markets.  It seems utterly amazing to me that you would happen to see something like this about tops.

"les ballons a vapeur" is fabulous! I must make one!
Pity that children these days are not competent to play with matches, knives, electricity and farm equipment.  I would not have grown up to be what I am but for those experiences.  I guess today "Angry Birds" is all the science and mechanics that the new generation is able to handle. :(
