Japanese documentary on tops WOW!
« on: December 08, 2013, 12:42:52 PM »

EDIT: English version further down the thread.
================

Just have to let this one speak for itself.  (too bad the English closed captioning is mostly nonsensical, one host is in English but dubbed over in Japanese so maybe an English version exists somewhere)  about 30 minutes long so plan accordingly.

?????????????Top

WOW! is right John!
Wonderful video!

At about the 9:18 mark Masaaki Hiroi is featured.  His Edo Spinning Tops are available at:
http://www.japanuniquegifts.com/product-list/1

There is a video for his Tortoise and Hare model:

By the way, the Super Spinner style (kyoku-goma) sells for JPY 57000 / USD $553.9628 (at today’s conversion rate).  :o
The price does not include: shipping or import taxes, duties, etc.

They do accept PayPal, so ordering should be a breeze if you’re interested!  >:D >:D ;D

Hmmm?  I only have a moment to glance at it right now but what I saw looks very interesting.  I hope to see the full thirty minutes here in a couple of days.

 :o  8) Truly wonderful documentary!

I wish I understood better what the guy who goes around with the beigomas is doing.  Is he a beigoma hustler making money on bets?

Thanks a lot for the link, Larry. But the Super-Spinner is out of my Christmas  budget  :(

Great video, thanks John.  One of my favorite tricks was at 7:30, when the gal ran the top along her kimono, from hand to hand behind her head.

Walter, the Watts’ tops are indeed a steal!

I suggest you members who might not have one (or MORE) pick some up.
If you haven’t spun one yet you will be in for a real treat in addition to becoming an owner of an American classic.

Watts’ tops are TOPS!

this video is actually originally an English NHK Begin Japanology video which was brought to my attention by Mimasu Miya. ( https://www.facebook.com/kyokugoma38 )   http://www.kyokugoma38.com/
Mimasu Miya is a student of Mimasu Monya sensei in the video.
the original english link for the video I think is no longer but I came across this one. the audio isn't the best though.

Thank you Mark for this English version.  Understanding what is being shown makes it much more interesting.

Yes, thank you.  The beigoma man turned out to be the founder of a beigoma club, not a hustler  :P

The sound was not synchronized so I had to open one video for the sound while watching another.  I think I will download the videos and fix the sound.

I uploaded Part I with the audio sync fixed:

If there is interest I'll do the same to the second part.

I am sorry about the squeaking sound, it is in the original audio (tape recording?  :-\ )

I have the video as unlisted because there are copyright issues (membership to the board has its privileges  :P )
