I would like to believe that the grooves are for marketing purposes only. As you have said only professionals like Duncan suggested a groove-less prototype, but still they came up with tops with grooves. Ordinary buyers collect tops because of the looks and not actually for perfecting the craft of spinning.

In summary:  Groves are for looks only.  If they are too big they can catch the string and take all the spin away, usually only on tricks like drumbeat when the top is horizontal.

Yes, welcome to the forum! If you find an old post you are interested in, don't be shy in resurrecting it.

By the way, two days ago I deleted 5 recent "members" that from their signatures/websites it was evident were just advertising their wares (but had not posted yet). For the time being I will continue letting new members register without pre-approval, but I may need to change that in the future if we start to attract spammers. Anyway, we are up to 83 registered true members. Yeah!
