I haven't been able to find a good string locally, but you can buy string cut to correct sizes in a couple of places.  Check the following two sites an their "top" or "string" sections:

http://www.spintastics.com/index.html

http://www.yoyonation.com/home.php?cat=343

Cotton string is best.  Look for a very tight wound string.  I check at all hardware stores, etc.  I have not found such for a number of years.

no, I mainly wanted to know if there was an alternative to having to buy the string on www.yoyonation.com for my imperial which is my only top right now.

I like the YYN string, especially for a light top like the Imperial or sidewinder.  If you find hardware stores with cotton twine, like that used for chalk line tools, look for something in the size range of 21 to 24. (or try several sizes)  There doesn't seem to be a really consistent standard for string size, but these should be close.
