new tip for top just made
« on: February 08, 2013, 02:33:52 PM »

Well I spent my morning making this tip for the top looks like it might work. Now I wait, need to go to the store for some cord so it can be spun.

The shape looks good. It may be a little undersized for the size of the top, not sure.

The base of the tip mates up with the top and is  0.910"  the neck of the tip 0.260' and the wide part of the tip is 0.256"
Hope that gives you a better idweaa of the size if it's to small I can always make a new one.

If you make another one, I would try to make the angle where it meets the top match up better.  I would also double the size of the neck shelf.  I'm afraid the size of rope you need for a 5" top will slip right off of the tip you have there.

I could use a course on top nomenclature like is the top part of the top the crown the neck should etc. sounds silly but on the other hand. Well onto the tip, I cut the tip at a 45 degree angle wanted to see how 45 degrees looked in relationship to the top itself. I still am curious as to what angle makes a good top of this size, mad turned, made produced you get the idea.  If the top itself is okay I can make a large protractor arm a pivot on a base then lay it down onto an oversized protractor to come up with to angle. Or I could rake the hieght by the width divide by some formula and walaa you get, wait thats to much thought process. Lets go play

hello again Jerry
the string which goes with my 5" Watts Top  is 5.5 mm thick which is roughly 13/64
for your top i would suggest a string between 13/64 and 15/64
hence the need for a bigger neck

good weekend

Jim when say neck I'm taking it that is the area between the two 45s. Do I just make a flat spot in this area and if so could I take the 45 closest to the tip reduce it so that is more of a right angle giving it a longer shaft in this area. Hope this make sense.

Names for the different part of a spin top tip have not been established.  I propose the following:

What Jim is saying is that your tip needs to be wider at the neck and have a much bigger chin, because the necessary thickness of rope will most likely fall right off the tip you have made.  The specific degree of angle is not critical for performance, but IMO it looks much better when the shoulder is at the same angle of the body.

Here is a quick sketch comparing your first tip to the next tip (dashed line) if you make one:

I think the chin term is completely new but makes a lot of sense.  Love it; this should be the official spintop tip terminology.

Great discussion.  I have made tips for years and now I know what the different angles are called.  Thanks Chris. :D

Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin.  Wait......I don't want to sound negative.  I like the term chin.  I just wanted to point out the three little pigs reference.
