Another great photo (www.ebay.com/itm/190771032017). This was published by the Boston Traveler, April 21, 1958.

The caption says: "The man on the flying trapeze never performed with any greater ease than was displayed by Daniel Sirc in a top spinning contest in New York. This business with a toe was a cinch."

Another great press photo, but the auction does not identify the publication, just that it now belongs to the Rogers photo archive. It's seems to have been taken on January 9, 1979 and used the next day.  The caption written on the back is: José Martinez Spinning Large Top:

It looks like a really big top, but it could also be a trick of perspective. I wish I knew more about him.

The diameter of the rope at his hand is about the same as his finger which is a reasonable size for a top as big as that perceived in the photo.  If they've used a camera trick to fool us, then they have been very thorough in their efforts.  I'm choosing to believe that there is a nice top that large somewhere which will appear again someday for us to enjoy. 8)

do any of these tops look like they will spin when they hit the ground... at all?
Yeh, the second from the left seems to just be throwing his top at the camera man.  Apparently he was copying the boy in the middle since it looks like his already flew by the camera.  As for the other 3 well, lets just say we know why they aren't on the board with us today.

Fun pictures though!

Haha!

The boy on the far right may get a few seconds of spin. :-\
