Best Day EVER!
« on: November 15, 2012, 11:52:13 PM »

I just spent the entire day in Rochester NY with Don Olney (The Toycrafter)! It was AWESOME! After breakfast/lunch at a local diner we spent the first part of the day talking about and looking at tops. There was a LOT of that. Don has an enormous collection, and a lot of it isn't even on display. Then we spent a few hours talking about and playing with mechanicals. Again, SUPER fun. Then we spent a couple of hours messing around with the laser engraver. Good times. I should be able to post some photos tomorrow.

That sounds like a perfect day, indeed!  I hope to do that tour one day.

I can see you and Don teaming up for the next UBCU mechanical trophy: it is a perfect match!

I am looking forward to the pictures.

That must have been so much fun!  I can imagine you and Don swapping mechanical ideas given your past achievements with top trophies.  I eagerly await photos.

Glad you got to spend the time with Don.  I'm looking forward to hearing more!

Best day ever might be a bit of an exaggeration, but it sure was great!  Then again, Mark is too young to have grandchildren, so it might have been his best day ever?  We sure did have a lot of fun, and  even with about 7 hours, a lot of stuff got forgotten, missed, etc!  We are already talking about a repeat visit during the RIT 2013 Juggle In. http://www.rit.edu/sg/jugglingclub/jugglein/   If anyone else wants to join us, let me know.  Mark suggested  that I let folks on here know about my stash of large string launched flipover tops.  I'll try to get them posted on Ebay soon?  I'm thinking $10 each including shipping within the USA? I'll be glad to work with the out of USA folks too of course!  I haven't measured, but I think the top is about 2.75" dia. or there abouts?  If you want to just send $10 and your address to Don Olney, 1237 E. Main St., Rochester, NY 14609, go ahead.  They really do flip over nicely, but you don't want to get your knuckles in the way!

Sounds like you guys had a lot of fun. I'd be interested in a few flip tops. I've never played with one before so it'll be cool to try it out.

Oh, I didn't realize you were the one who made those flip-overs (tippe tops).  I love the one I got from the Burlington Museum (for $25!).  I highly recommend it and at that price it is a steal. I used it on the discussion of the tippe top behavior (link).

Picture of Mark Hayward in my studio holding one of my large dreidels!  Proof it actually happened?

He looks happy, like a kid in a candy store (with lots of "conically-shaped" candy  :P )

That is a big dreidel, no doubt.

Once again I say "I am extremely jealous".

I want to go and see it all first hand.  Thanks for the pictures.  I always wanted to have a picture in my mind of what his workshop building looked like.
