Merry Go Round
« on: July 27, 2012, 12:50:19 AM »

Greetings,
Thanks to you guys I am able to consistently do a sky rocket, balance in my hand, and rarely a boomerang. The kitchen is too small to practice boomerangs and the Atlanta summer is too hot. I'll learn to do better in the fall.

Now I am trying to learn the Merry go Round.
After watching a few videos I am a bit clueless what I am doing wrong.  I tired this with my gyroscope and it works better.
With my Sidewinder I can get about half a go-round before the top turns on it side and falls off the string.

Please give me any thoughts or advice.

Thanks
Kirk

First and foremost, you need to do it in the same direction the top is spinning: counter-clockwise if you are right handed.
Secondly, you need do it at the right speed: the precessional speed as that will let you keep the tip pointing towards the axis of rotation while it turns around.
By the way, use your non-throwing hand to control the drop from your hand into the MGR.
Good luck!

OK, so the speed of the Carrousel must be related to the speed of the top.  My top is falling with the crown going around faster than the point.  Do I need to slow down or speed up?

Thanks for posting the great video.

Are you sure you are not following the top with your hand? It sounds like you may be doing that.  The hand should remain fixed as the center of rotation.

So here I am a month later having set aside the merry-go-round for a while.
I picked up a top, threw a boomerang, did one go round, hoisted it to my hand to spin for a while.  Yelled hooray!
One Throw, One Catch, one go round, once again to my hand
Put the top away for the night batting 1000 :-)

Go Kirk!

You are doing better than our Cincinnati Reds, and as of today they are leading the majors in win
percentage.

Way to go, man!!!

Bringing back a 3 month old thread.  I have been consistently frustrated with the Carousel. After watching the Cometa video on the trick I realized that I was going around way to slow.

Now I am well above 50% success. (but only one go around) I will be working on this with renewed hope.

Kirk

PS I've been throwing with some kids at church (& some adult sized kids) The parents got together and we placed an 8 top order today.

Sounds like a fun group.  I am excited to hear about your progress and your spinning friends.  How neat to get a group order together!

Control the speed of your circle to keep the tip of the top pointed toward the center of the circle.

Wow! Finally! Success!
I just now did my first real 3 around Carousel!
Thanks to all you guys for tips and encouragement.  Palm down, even circle speed, keep the hand in the center of the circle.

Congratulations!  I still remember the day I learned MGR: "Hey, look, I can do spintop tricks!" It felt good. At the time I thought I only had to learn a few more tricks (those on the trick sheet that came with the sidewinder). It somehow did not work that way . . .  ::)

Next steps: crazy eights, pole dancing, blizzard, wire walker (if you have a fixed tip), helicopter and finally the show-off trick: corkscrew!

And then, trapeze . . .
