ah ah !! you're curious !!

referring to Joe Mauk's past works on large tops

the top is held straight in a king of "stand"
the rope will be wrapped near the tip despite the torque problem
then the rope goes into a pulley
and is held at 10-12 meter high by the tower
at the end there is a huge counter weight
dropping the counter weight pulls the rope
and eventually the top will spin for over 45 mn
and Joe starts to preach ....

that's about it 8)

so is the top made to stand straight by the launch pad or is it free to wobble?

I copied the following from face book and pasted here.  Please join in praying for Joe.

Byron T. Watts
Praying for Pastor Joe Mauk who is going into surgery NOW to repair a skull fracture caused by a winch failure during the first attempt to spin The World's Biggest Spinning Top.
 Don Olney
In an odd turn of events, a gear in the winch broke, and injured Joe, but no one else. He seems to be OK, but did get a skull fracture. There was a doctor there, and a nearby hospital, so things appear to be going well. Evidently the top also sustained damage from a piece of the broken gear! No definitive word on whether the top spun or what records may have been set?
·

Walter Watts How about hooking a car to the rope and driving away? Seems so simple to me.

Sorry to hear of the bad news.  Sounds like Joe will be OK.  That top doesn't have him beat yet!

Go Joe!

Oh! That is terrible!  :'(  But I am glad you are doing fine now and nobody else was hurt. On the other hand, this makes it much more interesting for a documentary of the attempt and your future biography.  ;)

Will see if I can post some pics.  Also another friend and top spinner from Australia emailed me a cartoon he made up about the attempt.  He is obviously recalling that in 1986 I tried to pick up the 60-lb top in a dish-like mechanism, had no control, hit me in the right cheek and knocked me down, had friction burns on cheek and jaw and ended up having a root canal to remove a nerve in a tooth that was destroyed by the impact.  We are taking extensive safety measures for this one!

You must be the first person knocked out and sent to the hospital by a giant top! Twice!!!   :o If I was you I would not try anything bigger . . .

Another face book update.

Don Olney
Picture shows Joe and The World's Biggest Spinning Top before the winch broke - damaging both Joe and the top! Evidently after the accident, 12 guys grabbed the rope and ran with it. Result was a 19 minute SPIN! Thank you Joe for a great event! We are all pulling for your full recovery!

What?  A killer top breaks the skull of its creator and it takes 12 guys to tame it into submission.  And the result is a new Guinness record!?!  What a tale.  Right when you think the story can't get any better it takes a new turn and is even more stunning!

The thought of the cartoon makes the whole thing even more astounding (and humorous)!
