Of course, I am not exactly sure what you are doing but my best guess is that you could try to smooth things out.  Try to make the circles around your hand as smooth as possible so there isn't any jerky movement that could allow the top to leave the string.

Good luck!

I haven't mastered this yet, but I made great progress after I figured out your forearm needs to be more parallel to the ground.  When I would do a merry go round, my forearm would be pointed more toward the ground.  When I tried to move into a crazy eight from there, the top would always fly off the string.  Level you arm out and see if that helps.

You gotta make sure you're twirling that string around with enough speed to keep the tension on it, but not so fast as the top wants to fly out, or slow enough where the tip will slip out of the wraps due to lack of tension. The transition can be a bit tricky at first until you can maintain relatively consistent speed between the Over/under and through the zone between the two. For me, it was slowing down and getting slack and the top flying out of the wraps. Rotations 1 and 2 would be good, but then it would fly out on 3 during transition, usually off to my right(I play right handed).

I remember struggling with crazy 8 for a long time.  Then I got a Spintastics Trompo Bearing.  I don't know why, but this top is really easy to do crazy 8 with.  Others I have taught found the same thing.  After learning with the TB I was able to easily transition to other tops.  Smooth and subtle hand motion and lots of spin help.  After you get it, the next trick is Texas Cowboy.  It's just a crazy 8 but bigger.
