Am I correct that these spin the opposite direction than your normal throw spintop?  ???

Yes, normally you whip from the outside with your dominant arm and it will spin the reverse as a spintop.  But if you wanted you could whip in the reverse direction by going over your head.  In fact, sometimes people switch hands, or even use a whip in each hand, and the second arm will do the reverse whip.

Is that groove I see on the body of the top for whipping into or can you whip the top anywhere on the body? ???
You whip anywhere on the body, although if you hit high it tends to wobble more.
I may post a video of my Chinese whip top this weekend.

Will the filming of the video be on an open or closed set? I might want to observe.

Thanks, Larry. I was on my phone, which limits my internet patience.

Well that is embarrassing.  I have been following this board pretty faithfully but some how that report on the Texas Jugglefest got by me.  Thanks for the link to the video.  My extended family regularly get together out at my Father in Law's ranch.  I have been wanting to put together a Whip Top to have out there.  I have some nephews and nieces (and I am sure some of the adults) that would have a blast playing with one of these.  I was going to try putting my first one together with parts out at the ranch.  If I can find a pre-sharpened fence post that would work nicely.  Or I will just whittle a small log.  There are plenty of old bikes out there that I could use an inner tube for a whip.  I like Woodguys idea for a Acorn Nut as a replaceable tip.
