Custom Buttons
« on: September 06, 2011, 08:08:05 PM »

I made a few buttons this past weekend and thought I would show you how they came out.

I used a 5" Orbital Sander (and trimmed down a few fingernails in the process!).

Three are made from peach pits and the other three are made from Dogwood.

They are all pretty light in weight and totally unobstructive in play.

Sanded peach pits?  8) I think with little more you could have a good entry for Jim's finger top contest!

Loves it!  I will look at peaches differently now.  Like every chunk of wood I see I think, "there's a top in there."  Now with peaches, "there's a button in there..."

Having seen them first hand I'll attest that the pictures don't do them justice.
Outstanding!

Chris if you are really careful in splitting a peach pit you might get 2 buttons out of every pit.

Thanks for your kind comments guys.  :)
I have to give the credit for this to 2 people:
First to my Dad,
who taught me how to spin a top and who taught me, many, many years ago, (and I do mean many years ago) to fabricate a one-piece finger ring out of a whole peach pit;
and Secondly to Chris Neff,
for his constant comments about not liking large buttons, as he says…”Heavy buttons drive me nuts.”

I am printing and folding bulletins for this coming Sunday in the church office.  The one lady who helps me is 89 and tells me all kinds of stories about old Miamisburg.  I just told her about making things out of peach pits and how I had never heard of that.  She told me she remembered a man making a basket out of a peach pit and she kept it all these years until just a short time ago when it came up missing.  Interesting!  I have so much to learn.

With the seeds of apricots may make whistles, I sold my pendants made ??with seeds of this kind, applying fire can get a pretty red and can be polished like a mirror, if I find photos I put, many that I did.

Here is a b-day present I received from Larry:

The pouch with the plunge top prints  8) is a hot/cold rice pack for when my wrist is sore from playing tops (so says Larry).

The buttons are beautiful and because of the light weight they are perfect for (non-counter weight) play. I have started replacing some of my conventional buttons with them.

Your are TOPS Larry!!!
