i dont remember if i have had that bearing cleaned...but throw the whole thing to a jar with mineral spirits. if you can take out the shield of the bearing (do it gently dont push to much on it you could damage the balls inside) for better cleaning, but that is not necessary, to avoid damaging the bearing. that bearing is not replacable, you would have to buy a new one.

Killswitch is right, you can just immerse the top in mineral spirits (say for 30 minutes) without taking out the tip. You only need to immerse the tip: an old film canister is great as you can stand the top on it and use very little fluid.

poptop: what do you mean by free up? cause that bearing is stuck on...you cant take it out unless you want to kill it. :)

ta0: well the process of cleaning is same as with yoyo bearings, so basicaly i put the bearing in and shake it for couple seconds...then take out the tip and spin the bearing with your finger when you see it spinning for quite long time and not stopping quick it is fine cleaned.

You can clean the bearing as is showed in the next video.

And more about extracting bearings from the body of the top:

runBMC: because cleaning the bearings is the same thing. However, I prefer to clean my tops without taking the tips out, just by immersing the lower part of the top (in part out of laziness, in part because in some tops it is not easy or you destroy the o-rings).

Pulp: your video tutorials are amazingly detailed. Wow! A great resource for the beginner.
On the BK you replaced the original o-ring with a piece of tubing, didn't you?

I prefer to clean my bearings with water soluble citrus degreaser, the same stuff that I use to clean my racing/road bike.  Works great, rinses clean with water, and environmentally friendly  ;D   Smells a hell of a lot better too.

Yes, I use a piece of silicone tubing because in my opiniĆ³n the place of the groove for the o-ring aren't placed in the correct position (in my home-made iron tip). In the original ones works quite well too.

Thanks for the video coment.

When i was salesman ibuyed an citron ecological cleaner, but the smell was delicious. Mmmmmmm the smelllll !

blizzard bearing
« Reply #13 on: September 04, 2009, 12:35:28 AM »

By "free up", I meant that the bearing just wouldn't spin freely even after a good soak in solvent--I think I used Acetone?  I suspect I got a bad bearing...

Not sure if it could be removed from the tip (without special tools or destroying the tip), nor do I know if there is an easy-to-find replacement.  They look about the same size as TK yo-yo bearing, but I've never checked carefully.

i also use mineral spirits, just drop the tip in and let it soak for a few minutes and give it a spin. i like to soak it a couple times to try and free up all the lube in the bearing. the drier the better. you can get it from wal-mart, but i think you have to be over 18 to buy it. ask your parents.  ;)

i checked the TK bearing theory. i pulled a bearing off of my SB2 (who doesn't have one of these?!) and i couldn't fit it on my tip. either it's the wrong size or they used some kinda magic to get the bearing on the tip.

Prolly magic ;D.  I'm going to try the multiple soak technique.  I wish I had one of those sonic jewelery cleaners.
