2010 Ultimate Battletop Championship of the Universe
« on: October 10, 2010, 01:10:26 AM »

Normally I like to post some information before the contest, but this year was especially hectic, so it didn't happen.  Sorry.  Here are some photos are the long-awaited video.

We had four battletop trophy winners in Chico:

Tony North (2010), John Bozung (2008), Dazzling Dave Schulte (2007), Joe Purdy (Flatland 2010)

The trophy is what makes the contest Mark, great stuff.  I found your videos of earlier trophies - I didn't realize you had been doing this for a while.

Thanks Chris.  Yeah, there have been 7 all together.  Mostly at Nats and MadFest.  At the beginning I figured that if we were going to have a great battletop contest, the best way to get a lot of people involved was to have a great trophy that people really wanted.

Yes, I have said it before but your trophies are the coolest ever. I really want to win one, one day. I am sure Eric, for all the lots of wonderful tops and yo-yos he has collected or made, the UBTCU trophy he won (first UBTCU I believe) has a very special place in his collection.

I did not practice before coming to nats as I said I would. But in the practice throws we had over there I was doing pretty well. Then the battle started and I completely collapsed and I tied for last! Perhaps it was a matter of trying too hard  :'(  On the regular battle there was a three way tie between Neff, Jon and Tony at 14 points each (SQ had 13 and I had just 2!). The winner was decided by sudden death.

PS: Is it my imagination or at 0.33 in the video you can just see a ghost top coming down first?  ;)

My ultimate dream would be to host an ultimate battletop championship of the universe here in Miamisburg.  Wouldn't it be great to open Topland (my backyard) in late August next summer and part of the grand opening would be to have a big top battle with one of Mark's amazing trophies as a reward?  Hey, I can dream....can't I?  Afterall, Mark was one of the inspirations for Topland and I believe he is the one to give the area the official name!  He has been a big promoter of the Hall of Fame and I think there might be the slightest possibility that he could open his heart (and his creativity) to our project here in our historic downtown.

I think I will get on my knees tonight and pray for a miracle like this to occur.

Each one usually takes about 3 days.  This one was about the same amount of time, but since I was struck by a severe bout of lameness, I started too late and had to stay up all night before leaving for Nationals to finish it.  So I guess it was two days, but one of those days was reeeaaallly long.

He's absolutely right, my UBTCU trophy has a special place in my collection.  It's out on a table in my display room for all to play with.  Everyone who sees it loves it.  Mark you make cool stuff!!!

Mark,  What a creative mind you have.  And to be able to put it into a trophy like that,  Wow!  Makes me want to do a bit of practicing with the overhand throw.  I did come in dead last at the Flatlands but had a ball doing it.
