Top like a Yoyo?
« on: August 24, 2010, 08:18:33 PM »

I noticed on TopSpinning.com that Herman Lau does a trick where he throws the top straight down like a yoyo and it spins back up into his hand. I have a friend thats pretty good with yoyo's and i think it would be funny to learn this trick and sort of jokingly mock him haha. The problem is, i have no idea how that trick is even possible X]

I think Alan has had some recent thoughts on this, and Jon G has shown me a top on the end of a string variation with a bearing tip, so there are some good possibilities

I believe on that trick Herman has the end of the string tied to the (fixed) tip of the top.

I have been experimenting for a long time on rewinding a top in mid play but unfortunately I don't have anything to report yet  :(

Unless, of course, you consider a P213 a top.

Hmmm yea Ta0, i agree. I figured out how to do it today on my own just playing around with some weird wraps, basically tying the string to the tip. Pretty cool effect, i just wish there was a way to use it in some sort of combo. Make sure you let us know if you ever figure anything out :] And Neff are P213's available in mass production or is that simply something you modded yourself? It looks sweet.

Neff, I have a Duncan Imperial cut and gluded to both sides of a Yomega Power Spin, is that a P213?

A post link for you:  http://www.ta0.com/forum/index.php?topic=191.0

I believe that was one of my first posts on the board.  Ahh, memories.
I came to this board because I met ta0 at 09 Worlds, and I was researching top tricks to adapt to the P213...
Little did I know I would become immersed in that which is TOPS

I was there in the background when Neff got his picture with Figaro.  It was starting to rain and we all quickly moved back inside Lucky's house.

Neff, I need to learn how to compress pictures so for now I can not take one of it.  But it is on the bottom shelf next to Steve's head on the rewind top.  Blue and red Power Spin with an orange Duncan Imperial with a white tip.

I don't think the head on the "Ultimate Top" is that of Steve, or is it?  ;D

The video is here: Top like a yo-yo

You tie the string to the tip, let it fall and start to pull back smoothly just before it reaches the bottom. My record is 4 rewinds in a row.

Yeah I think that counts as a P213 - I would loosely define it as an combined spin top and yo-yo.  I wonder who made that one?  Anyway, didn't mean to sideswipe the topic...

Herm's trick is great.   It would be really quick and easy to attach a 2-twist string to the point, like a fat and long yo-yo string.

Something like this? Started messing around with it after Flatland. Took a length (~11') of #24 cotton twine and split the three strands apart. Used one strand to make a big yo-yo string. Why do top strings have three strands anyhow?

Smoother texture thus smoother ride, and more surface area for regenerations.
