Unexpected Tops
« on: July 26, 2010, 02:16:11 PM »

I just returned home from a weekend to Brown County, IN, with my wife for our second anniversary.  The trip was the usual excitement (some top throwing), but I had a couple interesting run-ins with unexpected tops (and pictures for you).

We got to our cabin on Saturday

and I gave a ceremonial throw with a JohnM original

We took a trip to Brown County State Park and saw some cool scenery.

My wife, Jennifer, wanted to go to their store in the park and, behold, there in front of me was a packaged wooden spintop.  So, Jennifer said I could get it and of course I was really happy.

I immediately had to boomerang it.

It also came with a nifty carrying bag.

Though this was not all!!  We left the park and decided to return to the cabin.  On the return, we took a side trip to Story, IN.  As we pulled in I noticed a great sight.  I had to stop to get a better look and then a picture.

An original Red Top Beer sign from my home in Cincinnati in the middle of Indiana!!

So for the forum, I had to get a picture with my Brown County Park top next to the sign!

I think most people on this board would stop the car if they see a sign like that. They would also smuggle a spintop into a vacation with their sweetheart . . .  ;)

Looks like someone was using it for target practice.  I have hopes that my brother (still near Cincinnati) will get a sign like this for me.  Still have hopes just not as strong as the hopes use to be.

I think most people on this board would stop their car and try to buy that sign from the owner.  'Come on, it's beat up and stuff, $25 and I'll take it off your hands!!'  I'd sure make a run at it.

Nice pics too.

Heh, I know exactly where the picture with you and your wife was taken.  If you like breathtaking fall foliage and big crowds, come back in a couple months or so.

Looks like someone was using it for target practice.

The Story Inn bar did seem a bit sketchy.  A lot of bikers. :o
They were really nice even they thought it was weird that someone was actually spinning a top like their precious spin top sign.

Great pictures.  I'm anxious to find out where that red top beer sign is.  That looks like it would be a nice car ride on my day off!!!

Guess what?  I called the Story Inn bar.  They confirmed that, indeed, they have a Red Top beer sign on the side of the building.  I asked for the manager.  I offered them $50 for the sign.  They started laughing and said "unfortunately, that sign is not for sale."  I was ready to try another offer when she went on to say "The owner loves that sign.  You would have to come and get it over his dead body."

I guess I can still go over and get my picture with it but that just doesn't seem as exciting as going over there and picking it up to bring home!

I'd reckon .

You can actually see the sign from the street view on Google maps.
