Diabolo Festival in China
« on: July 08, 2010, 07:55:34 AM »

Check out the photos in this article.  All of the photos show participants performing Kong Zhu or one wheeled diabolo.  A women does 12 at once and there are also "ginormous" variations.

Zeemo, you always find the coolest stuff.  You know I've got to forward this link to the diabolo players in our club. Thanks, buddy.

Spinning a dozen simultaneously? AMAZING!

The giant ones seem to be spun like a hula loop: interesting!
And this is probably the biggest diameter top I have ever seen spun on the hand:

I would love to one day go to that festival.

What?  A dozen at a time!  That is mind boggling.

Here is a short clip showing how the "ginormous" kongzhu is spun -

It appears as if they acceleration (regeneration) is accomplished by changing the foci of the ellipse.
For more info see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellipse

What I want to know is how does he get it started?  Please comment.

The spinning top variations of the world don't cease to surprise and amaze me! Great video find, thanks!!!

That kongzhu is probably spinning quite slowly so it may be possible to start it by just wrapping a couple of time the rope around it and letting it fall, or something like that. He seems to be using gloves, so I think he is not keeping the rope fixed with respect to his hands but it is feeding it. My guess is that the regeneration can be described as a continuous fall against the rope, in a way similar to regenerating a spintop on a plate.

I just came upon some photo's from an earlier festival held in May 2010 in the Jiangsu province.
The diabolos have long tails attached to them -

I also found this video which is long (over 7 minutes) which shows many more variations in size, shape, style of play, and multi player activity which I rate MUST SEE TV.

I like what that first link says about how this.........."is good for blood circulation and agility for older people."  This activity will be used in my training for the 2030 world championship I will share with Uruguay.  Mine will be in top spinning.  Theirs will be in soccer.  U. and me together in 2030!!!

That video is really wonderful! You can even see in detail how they start the big one.
It blows my mind the potential there is in China for top spinning!
