Can anyone walk me through barrel rolls or at least show me how to get into that kind of loop?

See 1:30 on ta0's Part I of Third 8 spinning top tricks video.
What you can't see in the video:  right after a roller coaster or sewing machine catch, stick your button-hand-index-finger in the loop, in other words, under the string on the outside (left string for you).  This makes it easier to get your free-hand-index-finger into the loop.

A good trick is start with the top onto the hand. Make a loop clock-wise and perform a mexican-fall. Continue with the description given by Chris. That loop give to you more time to do all the necesary things.

My string either ties up or goes vertical and falls off the string though.this also maybe too much, but could you happen to mirror that clip for me? Being lefty is awful!

I strongly recommend you start by learning half-barrel rolls (รกtomos ticos) where you only pass the throwing hand under the top.

You had a twist in your strig down by the top, the loop has to be clear with no twists.  You either have to do it faster or you have to do some finger work to prevent it from twisting.  Have someone hold the top for you and tell them which way to rotate it so you can figure out what is going on.  I'll see if I can mirror the clip for you, but on the video I do it from roller coaster, so it will look different.  Pulp's way is a good way.

What Neff said, get somebody to simulate the precession of the top while you figure out how to untwist the string and when to go under the top.  You go under the top when the tip is pointing towards the hand that's doing the movement.

After you get the top in the trapeze and close the loop you will need to use your non-throwing hand to untwist it while waiting for the right moment to start the barrel rolls. You may want to get the movement down first using a bearing top, specially this untwisting.

By the way, what you meant was half-barrel rolls, not half-orbits. But you should do them with your throwing hand: the movement of the non-throwing hand does not regenerate much, if any.
