Yo-yos are for those that can't throw tops.  - Takeshi

mmm..well, I agree in part with this statement...I recently started to play yo-yo,I am still learning and ...I think, of course, that top is much more difficult to learn and play well than yoyos. The facts are the ones that speak: a large quantity in all whole world who plays yoyos, and ever so little compared with them hat play top. There must be a reason simply to understand for that: tops has more degree of dificulty.
If you se the thing from another angle, yo can see both toys like sth marvelous.
The best would be to play top, diabolo and yoyo.

Spin to win!

We used to say this of spinning on our bicycles.  I guess it also goes for motorcycles, scooters, pinwheeles...

I saw an ad on TV for the new Toystory movie and am guessing there are no tops as characters.  I could imaging there being a spintop companion for Buzz Lightyear with the catch phrase " to inspinity and beyond" :D

Aracnoctambulo sir,  when I tell people that "yo-yos are for those that can't throw tops", it's in a playful way.  I guess I would call it playful razzing.  I'm totally not serious about it and no one has ever taken me serious before.

I must say that I would DEFINITELY have my problems with someone who were to actually subscribe to the theory that yo-yos are for those that cant' throw tops.

I am sorry if I came across as pompous by saying a statement like that.  I am a big fan of all skill toys.  Yo-yos, tops, diabolos, pen spinning, juggling, contact juggling, etc... I love 'em all.  Not all of them love me back (like bookspinning... grrr), but I have an appreciation for all of it.

I just remembered someone a while back saying something like "to spin is not a sin!"  I can't remember who that was.

In the USA Today newspaper (7/1/10) "Don't Quote Me" quiz they use a Mel Brooks quote..."As long as the world is turning and spinning, we're gonna be dizzy and we're gonna make mistakes."

¿Qué significado real tiene esa frase? ¿Cuándo o porqué se dice?

What is the real meanning of that sentence? When or why it is said?

Since throwing a top to the nail is a very difficult trick, people use it as an analogy to describe an impossible situation or to challenge an other one to do something challenging. Is like "Did you see Germany beating Argentina...ha... throw me that top to the nail...", something like that.
