what are some good top spinning phrases?
« on: June 24, 2010, 10:57:17 AM »

I had lunch at Jimmy John's sandwhich shop yesterday.  I love all their signs on the wall and their sayings.  I loved it so much that I am going to get some signs up in the top spinning hall of fame.  I need your help to come up with some other phrases.  Here are some I have right now......

If spinning tops is wrong I don't want to be right. (Takeshi)

Loco como trompo. (Pulp?)

Let's go for a spin.  (cartoon)

Isn't the whirled great?

I just remembered one from Jim Schreiber.......It's better to throw your top than blow it!

The gal at the Top Museum says "Remember, the world is a spinning top."

And there has to be a good quote I can use from the movie My Summer Story.

One from Jim (paraphrasing Hamlet):

"Toupie ou non Toupie; c'est là la question!"

Well, perhaps it needs to be in Frenglish (or Franglais):

"Toupie or not Toupie; that's the question!"

Not sure where this came from, a book I believe:

'Life without a passion is like a top not turning.'

That's from the top turner and philosopher of life Philippe Dyon.

Spintops are simple, but they are not easy.

When people ask me why there are more yo-yo players than top players, my standard answer has always been, "Yo-yos are for those that can't throw spintops."  Then after a small chuckle I tell 'em I'm kidding and that anyone can learn to throw a top.  Just take things step by step and start with the basics.

When I talk with people that are excited to start throwing tops or yo-yos, I try to be as encouraging as possible while at the same time letting them know that the tricks that I am showing them took me A LOT of practice.  That's when I usually tell them, "Spintops (or yo-yos" are simple, but they are not easy."

I explain to people that the parts to all the basic tricks are simple, it's the execution that's difficult sometimes.  When you're starting out, don't get caught up in learning any trick all at once.  Break it down and learn it in small increments.  For a top, learn to throw it on the ground before trying to pull back and catch it in your hand.  Ya know, that kinda stuff.

I'll keep thinking of phrases, but those two are ones that I use a lot and I'm glad you guys like 'em :)
