SWAN SONG a fantasy novel written by
 R Mc Cammon

its a post apocalyptic setting with a bunch of interesting characters

as a bonus you will find the word spintop twice

Considering how gory is that first passage, I'm not sure if I want to read it (but Halloween appropriate, I guess).

well , it is not that gory all the time !
the book in 2 volumes  of 500 pages each ,
gives time for reflexion and the narrative is of high quality
published in 1987  it got the world fantasy award for best novel and the Bram Stocker award

good reading !

To read a 1000-pages, it better be good!

This 2022 Italian novel, Il Giro della Trottola by Francesco Licciardi, has just 126 pages and apparently tops figure prominently in it (Amazon):
