The problem with the duck spinning idea is that, for a strobe/frame rate equal to the period between ducks, they will appear to spin at the same rate as the top and be a blur.
In theory, if you made the strobe period equal to precisely 27/28 the period of the top, you could see the duck rotate at about 1/28 the period of the top, what could be slow enough to follow the rotation. And when it increases to 29/28 the period of the top, the ducks would rotate in the opposite direction. In practice your top would be decelerating relatively fast and all these transitions will happen in a very short time.
Well, rubber duckies are apparently the key to success on YouTube. The opening video's gathered 2.7k views and 77 likes in just 2 days. I'm usually lucky to get 10% of that in 2 years!
