Interesting top finds
« on: June 29, 2020, 09:26:02 PM »

This first yellow one is a very curious top indeed. It features Dick Tracy on the crown, and on the side it says POST CEREAL. My guess is that it was a cereal box promotion. The grain is interesting too, as it is is also different from any other peg top I have seen; maybe white oak? It appears hastily made. Has anyone else seen something like this before?

The next two are much smaller than I thought they would be, only about two inches tall, one inch wide; originally I thought they were peg tops. Perhaps they are twirlers? (hand spun tops) Opinions gladly accepted.

Split that top!

I don't recall the Dick Tracy drawing. Certainly a box cereal premium (either in box or mail-in coupon). Nice find!

The tops with knobs may be small but are still peg tops for throwing with a string. Peg tops of that size were common at the start of the century: cheaper to make and fitted well in small hands. But all the examples I have are without the knob, so another good find!
