It looks like it wouldn't be so difficult to get the tops in the picture above after all:
http://bbs.voc.com.cn/archiver/tid-2206488.html
http://shop35931881.taobao.com/

These appear to be the same top and whips with detailed large photos.  Now all I need to do is get a Chinese friend to help me with the purchasing arrangements.  I might find someone willing to assist at the local university.  I searched for [陀螺 + 鞭] (which is Chinese for "top + whip") in google images.

Another nice photo:

A new "biggest" whiptop (206 kilograms!):

Yes, it is.  There are specifications for it online.  Depending on the size I read it weights between 2 and 4 kilograms.  And it is made of steel, not aluminum.  Of course the slit in the side makes a terrific noise when it is spun.  And the price in Yuan, when converted to US dollars is amazingly cheap!  Anyone want to buy a load and resell online?  You'd easily make a profit.

To confirm a few things, 鞭陀螺 is Chinese for whipping top, though I can only guess how to pronounce it.
The supplier that appears to be in the best position to sell online appears to be:
http://www.haowanju.net/
They sell through several online stores, all of which are solely in Chinese.  One of these is the Chinese version of Alibaba, so I registered with the English version of Alibaba hoping that the two websites would talk to each other, but it seems they operate independently requiring separate membership and passwords.  Too bad, a failure of globalization.  I sent a short message to Haowanju asking for assistance.  If that doesn't work I'll have to try plan B.  (Not really sure what that is right now.)  Aside from buying the top, I wish I knew enough Chinese to understand the society in which it is used!

Nice top image of small and big:

When I did get my first Chinese Yo-Yo/diabolo from China Sprout shop I noticed that they also had Whip Tops. I first learned of Whip Tops from China Sprout. I'm thinking about maybe getting a Whip Top now after what's been shared here on this post topic.
Here are the China Sprout links:

Thanks for suggesting the China Sprout website.  Ordering from them was very easy so I ordered the two whipping tops that you found there.  I prefer the more simple (and robust looking) wood or metal tops without the light-up gizmos, but I will take what I can get!  Maybe I'll find a way to get the other ones later.  And maybe I'll buy a bullwhip to try on these little tops, I wonder if they would survive long if I used it though!  After all, to judge by the pictures, nearly all the "fitness" whipping top enthusiasts in China use bullwhips with their whip tops.  Unfortunately, of all the online videos of whipping tops, none I've seen so far demonstrate how to use a bullwhip to whip the top.  Makes me wonder.

As luck would have it, I did find a website selling some very professional looking whipping tops.  Alibaba has a retailer from mainland China selling them in the following listed diameters (in centimeters): 6.3, 7.6, 8.9, 10, 11.4, 12, 15.  There are significant savings in getting large volume orders.  Just one 6.3cm top is $30.93, but buy ten 11.4cm tops and the price for each is about the same as one 6.3cm top.
http://www.aliexpress.com/product-gs/267021618-whipping-top-wholesalers.html

An 11.4cm top is 4.5 inches wide!  These tops are made of wood with an outer steel casing and a metal tip.

This retailer specialized in jewelry; these whipping tops are a departure from their normal line of products.  What do you guys think?  A good deal?

Woe.
Now that's a tuo luo whip top.
A nice find.
The price of the top is okay I guess. But the S&H.... China Sprout is an okay US importer. Now if I could find tops like this from an US importer and also the Japanese Koma trick tops. S&H is too much for my budget. Now back to tuo luo whip top topic. It would be nice to see what kind of tricks could be done with a whip top. hmmm...Boomerang?

For the jackpot of whipping top videos (very good quality), go here (this is a google video search for ):
http://video.google.com/videosearch?um=1&hl=en&q=鞭陀螺
One example:

Now I finally know how a bullwhip is used to turn a whipping top!  Yippee!

I contacted the whipping top seller at Alibaba (see reply #22 above) and I was sent a picture and the following video, which I then posted on youtube for easy access.  This is the same tops they sell:

If 5 of us order the smallest size (6.3 cm diameter), the price, including shipping to the US, for each would be $37.42. The next size (8.9 cm) goes up to $49.28 each. Not cheap but . . .

Seems like these would be a little easier to turn from wood than our beloved peg tops?  Anyone in the woodturning crowd tried yet?  I think we need a few of those big ones like in the ice photos above for a future spin top gathering  :D
