Don Olney's spinning top show in Upstate New York
« on: July 04, 2009, 11:40:48 AM »

I've done my spinning top show for many years for kids of all ages, but this is the first time I've gotten a fairly nice set of pictures.  My show is not so much a series of tricks, etc. but a demonstration of a bunch of spinning tops from my vast collection, all housed in a rolling tool chest.  I demo a large variety of tops, starting with tops we used to make at The Toycrafter, and then moving on to tops from all over the world, various methods of starting a top spinning, various materials, old tops, new tops, etc.

I posted a little blog entry about it here -- http://louisesdaughter.blogspot.com/2009/06/my-spinning-top-show.html .  Also some more pics on my Picassa page here ---  http://picasaweb.google.com/olneydon/SpinningTopShowCaledoniaNY#

Very neat!  I only have a few minutes to glance at it right now but I'm looking forward to spending some more time checking it out later.

What an honor to have Don Olney himself posting on the first day!   ;D

Here there is a (big) kid who would like to see the show!

I would like to get one day a large Japanese top like the one on the photo. By the way, I plan to make this board very friendly to top collectors too, and the relevant posts will be archived in the Collector's Corner board.

Welcome Don!

The "Japanese" top in the picture is one I made myself, not a real Japanese one.  It was actually made on the CNC router we had at The Toycrafter.  I was always sort of proud of making a wood top that worked very well on something other than a lathe!  I always tell the "kids" at my show that I made it myself for use in the show because if I broke one of my real Japanese tops during a show I might say something I shouldn't?

Hello Skye.  Welcome to our forum.  I know someone with your name and I believe they are also from the state of New York.  Could that be possibly why you posted on this thread?  Anyway, welcome!!!
