ps this website of old documents which have been digitalized is a great resource of information
if you enter " toupie " there are plenty of  pages of descriptions, patents and illustrations from the late 19th to the early 20th century

Wow! It's pretty impressive! I thought I had done a pretty comprehensive search of the archive of La Nature but I don't remember that one.
I searched the name they gave it in English, wiggle-woggle, and found this postcard:

That's an amazing ride! I imagine nowadays it would be impossible with lawyers suing for induced back pain  :o
The title of the article is human top and it's compared to a Hollandaise table where the top is replaced by people, but it probably belongs to NSTR   :-\

it probably belongs to NSTR : agreed :'(

very nice post card : the wiggle woggle seems much larger than in the 1st pic

This ride would be very bouncy...and likely great fun resulting in women with busted corsets! I can't tell from the photos how the ride would be reset - how are the carriages / cars returned to the top of the ride? I also wonder if the ride stalled how the motion would be restored.

I see a "track" to the left edge of the ride, which looks wide enough to roll the cars back up to the top on their sides.  Maybe with the help of a winch?
