Table Spin tops - for a Performance
« on: April 08, 2019, 06:09:14 AM »

      Hello!

You know those magicians that do close-up magic in a table surrounded, with coins cards... and those glittery little props...

I would love to do the same with tops, my first idea is to show a variety of interesting tops all with different behaviours or stories to behind..

      • Tippie Top
      • Levitron Top
      • Rattle back with laydy bugs (orientable one)
      • Spin down / Roll over top

  • Air powered top ->

  • Coin Top

  • Stacking tops

  • Giroscope

  • LEgo tops!
  • Japanese designs...

Surface to play with the tops.....

  • TOP-NO-SIS

  • The Hultet Bamboo dish arena

I need your help setting up this list and also finding a source to get the tops!! May be there is somethin I cannot miss in the upcomming Daniel Lassanske's collection...

Am I asking too much???  ;D ;D ;D[/list]

Spin top roulette might be fun.  Or a self winding whistling top.

Ludo and Christian had many different kinds of tops for sale at the Marines Festival. Guessing that shipping to Madrid would be reasonable.

Maybe a supported top (one with a handle to launch) and a twin spin.

If you're looking for interesting spin-down behaviors, include some tops with ball tips and high centers of mass along these lines...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_btrG34M0Q

By sliding the rotor (widest part) toward or away from the tip along the central shaft, you can adjust spin time, self-righting tendency, ability to stand against impacts, precession rate, etc. In the process, you also adjust the sounds a top like this makes on a resonant surface like a glass platter, empty plastic bin, or guitar body. Very entertaining.

For variety, how about coin tops.

That one is from Mars Alexandre (his facebook group is https://www.facebook.com/groups/1174157035977680/).

Or air powered tops.

Wow, Mecca Jr. and the larger Mecca I found on your YouTube channel are simply spectacular -- both at rest and while spinning down on video! Don't have Facebook access. What can you tell us about these masterpieces?

The Hultet Bamboo dish is a convenient arena for many of these types of tops, especially those that 'walk' when spun on the stem since the slope of the surface helps keep them contained.

Many of the Japanese designs could be interesting for the up-close style of presentation

The LEGO top exhibitions I put on are similar to what you have in mind. Since the tables are usually supplied by the venue, I find myself contending with spinning surfaces of variable smoothness, friction, and color. And some tables wobble or slope.

So I bring my own spinning surfaces and leveling shims. A cloth table cover with a fine weave goes a long way, as it gently suppresses travel with surprisingly little friction. Since most of my tops show best against a black background, I use cheap black bedsheets.

I also bring a concave, low-friction arena akin to the bamboo bowl johnm showed. This is essential for battle tops but also helps to contain tops that tend to launch with high travel speeds. The large  plastic "top bowl" Christian sells is excellent. Most concave mirrors and lenses are much too small for this purpose.

For most tops, however, I prefer a flat, low-friction arena with a very low lip. Glass microwave oven platters fill the bill nicely and are relatively inexpensive on Amazon. You can see my go-to platter in the video I posted above.

I love the Tortoise and the Hare set up that John shared. I was able to add one like it to my collection recently. It's a really nice effect.

For a close up situation you might get some mileage from a plate regeneration. I found this video post from Tao that shows the technique.
