Finally, a successful one-way-bearing top!
« on: November 05, 2018, 04:57:48 PM »

It took 4 tries, but I was finally able to make a one-way-bearing top!  It plays great and is definitely a different feel.  3" delrin, 97 ish grams.  I've wanted to play with a OWB top for a while, definitely a fun and unique feeling to be able to regen a bearing top.

Left to right:
QS hybrid, 3" delrin fixed tip, 3" delrin OWB.

And doing a quick test with it, snap start to spinning on finger!

Wow that is a really nice looking top and by that video looks to throw really well, too. That really looks like a premium top!

I'm looking to pick up a wood lathe when I've got the resources and I've been interested in delrin but it looks to be pretty expensive. How much did you have to buy for that top?

Thanks!  I'm extremely happy with how it turned out.  You don't need much for a top, I started out with some 3" rod that was about 3.5" long.  If you want to turn delrin do an ebay search for "acetal", which is the generic (non-brand) name for Delrin.  You will most likely find a better deal.  I initially bought a couple of 3" diamter, 6" long segments for about $26/foot with shipping on top of that, but I recently found a 4 ft. length for about $15/foot with free shipping (too good to pass on).  Occasionally cutoffs come on ebay for great deals, so look for those.

Here's the rods that I initially bought:

Very good, Jospin!!!  And great tips on where to find delrin.  An even better tip is acetal!

Ta0: Yep, made the tip myself.  Used an angle grinder to get within a mm of the target and then used files to fine tune the fit.  Took a lot of time and careful work.  The part of the tip you can see was ground and sanded to 600 grit.  The look was heavily inspired by the S8 tops, though I highly doubt the weight distribution is similar.
Jose: Just a hobby haha, and a relatively new one.  I’ve had several failures and as long as I work patiently and carefully things turn out well.  Luckily delrin sands pretty well, so I can usually hide my mistakes and make up for my lack of skill with time.

Wonderful work!!!!

Maurizio
Thanks everyone for your comments and excitement.  I had two tops that ended up not turning out (messed up the bearing seat among other things), though they should make good fixed tip tops.  I'm currently playing around with dying, and I think you guys will like the results.

Maurizio, big admirer of your tops.  Hopefully I'll be getting one soon!

Really nice tops. I have a lathe but haven't done much of anything with it. Posts like yours encourage me to give it a try and seeing the success of others is inspiring. I have some time off over the next couple weeks and I'll be practicing!
