I found these photos on the Library of Congress (www.loc.gov.) They are listed as:
"Top spinning contest at the annual field day of the FSA (Farm Security Administration) farmworkers community, Yuma, Arizona"
From March 1942. Taken by Russell Lee, 1903-1986







A search for "spinning top" gives a few other spinning top related images, but only as thumbnails, not the full photograph that has to be seen in person.
I would like to have a full resolution of this one: "Senatorial Peg Top - But They All Miss It!"



It's from the New York Daily Graphic, 29 March 1878, p. 197. The top says: "President's Policy".

Great pictures with lots of action.  They look like they were pretty serious about their throwing and wanted to really put something into their overhead throws.  It is also interesting to note the dirt areas they are throwing on.  Is that a road?

I just ran across a political spinner in Don's collection.  It says "Carter Is Tops"!!!
