translucent Duncan Imperial "8" on crown
« on: August 12, 2018, 08:35:12 PM »

Picked up this translucent Imperial on ebay.  It has the number 8 in the middle of the crown.  I haven't seen one like it before.  The crown is glued, not a snap crown.  And, it's much heavier than the glued Sir Duncan's I have.  It throws really nice with the extra weight.  If I can get a scale to weigh it, I will post the weight.

It dances around a bit with the spherical tip.  Are all Duncan tips interchangeable?  Does anyone have some Duncan tips to sell?

I can bring you to Miamisburg a vintage Duncan replacement kit and you could try it. I don't think I have that glued and heavy Imperial.

I have some other vintage Duncans.  I guess I could try to swap the tips, just to see if they fit. I just hate to pull the tip out of a top if it's fitting nice and snug.

I had never seen one like it, in the short time I've been looking at them.  Wondering if it could be an impostor?  I will bring it to Miamisburg and you can get a look at it.  Hopefully, I will find a scale and get a chance to weigh it before then.

The look of this top is reminding me a lot of the Monarc. So early Duncan tips or Monarc tips might fit this Imperial that you have...

The first thing I tried after read post..I tried some monarch tips I have they were bigger but I do not know how old they are..then I thought you could modify the opening of Duncan to fit a sidewinder tip that you can still get ..then i played with my Qsh and left the imperial alone . Love the history though

That was one of the first things I thought of when it came.  The weight, and feel of the plastic is very similar to the Monarc I have.

I found my Dad's vintage handheld pocket postal scale and weighed a few tops. I took the tape off of them before I weighed them.  My Monarc weighed 43g.  I found in an older post where someone gave the weight of a Monarc as 43.5g, so my little scale seems pretty accurate.
The yellow glued Imperial also weighed 43g.
My Sir Duncan weighed 33.
And a more recent Imperial snap top weighed only 30g.

I'm curious how those weights would compare to a Bearing King....

The only Bearing King I have is a Neff mod, so that wouldn't be an accurate comparison.

I have a red glued Imperial.  I have never seen another one, either in photos or for sale.  It is smaller than a present day imperial (lower case) and much better.  I too will bring some tips to the berg.

Does it have an "8" in the center of the crown?
