Silver Sneakers - over 65 opportunities for top spinning
« on: July 14, 2018, 12:53:25 AM »

Turns out turning 65 may not be so bad after all.  I got this SilverSneakers card in the mail today.  This may have just changed my life.  Is anyone else familiar with this?

My insurance qualifies me for this card and now I can go to many gyms and physical training facilities in our area for free.  Cold weather and rain have always hampered my spinning and juggling activities.  Now I have a lot of options.  Now I can try a bunch of places (lots of YMCA's and rec. centers) and not only practice but also introduce top spinning to many different people.  I can drive farther on my day off and check out other facilities.  Heck, I can try gyms all over the place when I am on vacation.  There are 14,000 certified SilverSneaker locations in the United States!!!  My mind is whirling like crazy as I look at all the possibilities.

Anyone else familiar with SilverSneakers?

My insurance didn't afford me the Silver Sneakers program, but it was offered at my gym. It a real cool deal.

I tried it out today for the first time "officially".  I walked in, showed the card and had the full run of the place.  I walked laps.  Walked around the gym.  Walked around all the treadmills.  Lifted weights.  Walked around the room with the ping-pong table and foosball tables.  And, most importantly, I found an exercise mat next to the track and threw my top for a while.

One location where I have spun tops.  13,999 to go.

I stopped in the Washington Township Rec. Center yesterday.  Very nice facility with a number of good spots to spin tops.  One big plus is that it is near a Chipotle.

I have now spun tops in 2 locations.  13,998 to go.

I like this "where do you practice" thread.  It ties in well with this silver sneakers thread.

Ha! Way to go!

Whoever had the idea of Silver Sneakers was not counting on you!

I'm lazy even to drag myself to a single gym.  ::)

I do not believe your comments about being lazy!!!  I have seen you on the go all the time in every place we have been together.  You very easily burn off the calories for those two pieces of pizza.

I normally would not be reporting every place I throw tops but you know why I am reporting every place I am throwing tops.

We are getting ready to head up to the Lake Erie area.  I am wondering if I will find any more good places to throw tops.  Meanwhile, I can report that I tried another location on my way to visit my son and grandboys just north of Cincinnati (West Chester area).  I will not be going back there as they did not have any good spinning space, that I could see.

I have now spun tops in 3 locations.  13,997 to go.

I didn't want to discourage you, Mike! You are an inspiration to all of us.
And this is the NSTR board, so you are free to post whatever. Although if you spin a top at each place I will have trouble justifying keeping it here  :-\

I realize this is the NSTR board but this is not where I originally posted it.  It seems like places where you spin your tops is not NSTR related.  We can now also report that there are many places in airports where one can throw tops and not be disturbed.  Nice spinning, Figaro.

I am becoming very suspicious of the 14,000 locations they say one can use the "silver sneaker card" and spin tops.  Planet Fitness is listed as part of that number but they were not very welcoming.  There are 1500 of them.  Curves is mostly for women and there are 7848 of them.  I went to two locations today and they said they do not participate.  So, I am guessing that 14,000 number is way lower than that for me and might be much closer to 4000-4500.  Of course, that is still a lot.  I will keep looking for good top spinning locations for people over 65 as well as others.

I have stopped at a couple of LA Fitness locations and I am becoming a big fan.  They have treated me nicely and have been very welcoming.  I am driving up to Rochester for a connection with Don Olney (Jim Neff and Butterfingers are going to meet us there) and I stopped at one LA Fitness location in Columbus, Ohio.  I got some spinning time in and a little lifting with my walking tour.  The internet says there are 700 of these locations in the U.S.  I am looking forward to checking out more of them.
